To stream a prerecorded retail promo on YouTube Live, create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into a YouTube-compatible encoder, and configure that encoder to play and repeat the video. The key connects the encoder to YouTube; it does not control looping. Confirm the loop and incoming preview before going live.
Check channel eligibility and choose when to stream
Before setting up an encoder, make sure the channel is eligible to live stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the account holder must meet its minimum age requirement of 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room. For an event you want to promote in advance, use Manage > Schedule stream. Scheduling gives you a watch URL to share and lets viewers set reminders; choose an immediate stream if you are ready to test and go live without advance promotion. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream.
Find the YouTube Live stream key and connect an encoder
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and create a stream or select an existing one. For a scheduled event, create a new stream or reuse settings from Manage > Schedule stream.
- In the stream settings, copy the Stream URL and Stream key.
- In the encoder, enter the Stream URL as the server and the Stream key in the stream-key field. If the encoder has a YouTube preset that handles these fields, follow its connection flow.
- When the encoder supports it, use YouTube’s RTMPS server URL and the stream key. RTMPS encrypts the RTMP connection. YouTube explains the RTMP and RTMPS setup in its encoder connection guide.
- If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in the encoder. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. See Manage live stream settings.
Treat the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the stream. Do not include it in screenshots, public documentation, or chats.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up the prerecorded promo and its loop
Configure playback in the encoder or playout system, not in YouTube’s stream-key settings. The encoder must be able to play the chosen file and repeat it for the duration you need. Confirm its current documentation covers file playback, repeat behavior, and what happens after a disconnect; YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to send a feed, but does not provide a retail-promo looping recipe or certify a particular encoder for continuous playback.
Software encoding is a documented option. YouTube also recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but dedicated hardware is not a universal requirement. Whichever route you choose, verify that the actual device or software can play and repeat your file before relying on it for a promotion.

Choose a protocol and stream quality
RTMPS or HLS
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted RTMP ingestion workflow when the encoder supports it. HLS is another documented option, but it requires an HLS-capable encoder and protocol-specific configuration, including the HLS URL, segment format and duration, and playlist behavior. Do not choose HLS simply because your source is prerecorded. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions.
Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to values supported by both your encoder and your upload connection. YouTube publishes recommended bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec; its encoder settings guidance also recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the exact range for your chosen format rather than assuming a single bitrate fits every stream.

Your available upload bandwidth needs to exceed the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends about 20% headroom, and notes that interruptions in the connection can affect the stream. Test using the intended resolution and frame rate on the actual connection before the retail event. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Test the feed, preview it, and go live
- Set up the encoder stream ahead of the event. YouTube recommends configuring encoder streams at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled start.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Check picture, audio, framing, and whether the promo repeats as intended. Test with audio and movement similar to what viewers will see, and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
- Confirm the event can be opened from the channel or watch page and on mobile devices.
- For a scheduled stream, select Go live only after checking the preview. At the end, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for a longer event without checking YouTube’s current guidance. See YouTube’s encoder setup and streaming instructions.

Troubleshoot common connection and playback problems
- YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed: Check that the encoder uses the correct Stream URL and current Stream key, and that the selected protocol matches its server address and configuration. If the key was reset, replace it in the encoder.
- The feed connects, but the promo does not repeat: Check the encoder’s file-playback and repeat controls. Looping is handled by the playout system; it is not activated by the YouTube stream key.
- The picture stutters or stream health is poor: Compare the stream’s total bitrate with available upload bandwidth. Reduce the bitrate or stream format if needed, preserve YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom, and test again on the intended connection.
- The preview looks or sounds wrong: Inspect the encoder’s source selection, audio, framing, resolution, and frame rate before going live. Use a full test feed rather than relying on the file’s local playback.
- The stream drops during the event: Check the connection and encoder’s reconnect behavior. YouTube’s setup guidance does not guarantee that a given encoder will resume playback or restore a continuous loop after an interruption; verify that behavior with the encoder maker.
- You cannot go live from the channel: Recheck channel verification, the account’s age eligibility, and any live-streaming restrictions.
Check rights and promotional claims separately
Technical setup does not establish that the promo’s music, footage, or advertising claims are cleared for use, or that it meets retail and advertising rules in your location. Confirm rights and applicable requirements for the specific content and jurisdiction before broadcasting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the prerecorded promo to keep running without leaving an encoder computer on at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing at home has to stay on; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
