To loop a prerecorded seasonal promotion on YouTube Live, create a live event in YouTube Studio, then use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 to repeat the video and -re to play it at its normal rate while sending it to YouTube’s encoder server. You’ll need a rights-cleared video, the event’s server URL and secret stream key, and an FFmpeg command configured for a compatible video and audio format. Test the exact file and settings in Live Control Room before sharing the broadcast.
Prepare a promotion that works as a loop
Export the seasonal store promotion as a video file with the intended aspect ratio, visuals, and audio. Watch the full file, paying particular attention to the transition from its final frame and sound back to its opening. FFmpeg repeats the file; it does not make the boundary seamless for you.
- Use product photography, logos, music, and other material the store owns or has permission to use.
- Keep the source quality you actually have. Do not upscale a small or soft-looking promotion simply to select a higher output resolution.
- Check that the final file plays correctly before connecting it to a live event.
For a live encoder workflow, YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion. RTMPS is the secure choice for a typical encoder setup. YouTube also supports HLS ingest for some codec and HDR needs, but its HLS guidance notes higher latency because it sends segments. Follow the protocol and muxer instructions for the ingest method you choose; the command below is an RTMP/RTMPS-style FLV example. See YouTube’s current encoder settings and protocol guidance.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and open its stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event into your encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send video to that stream.
- If you schedule the event, use the scheduled workflow to check the preview and click Go live when ready. YouTube says scheduling can help promote a stream. The exact Studio labels can change; follow the current event workflow shown in your account.
Do not paste a real key into a public tutorial, screenshot, source repository, or command you intend to share. A private script or protected environment variable can reduce accidental exposure, but consider whether your operating system displays command arguments to other users or processes. YouTube’s encoder walkthrough is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Loop and pace the video with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping; -stream_loop 0 means no loop. The -re input option reads at the file’s native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), which paces file-based output for a live stream. Both are input options, so place them before the -i they modify. FFmpeg cautions against using low read rates on real capture or live inputs because packets may be lost. Consult the FFmpeg documentation.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "seasonal-promo.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "<YouTube server URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
This is an illustrative, untested template—not an official FFmpeg or YouTube command, and not a guarantee it will work with every file or FFmpeg build. It assumes 1080p30 SDR H.264 video with stereo AAC audio. Replace the filename and destination placeholders with your actual values; do not include the angle-bracket placeholders literally. The output target commonly combines the YouTube server URL and stream key as shown, but use the exact URL and key format presented for your event.

At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its published H.264 video bitrate recommendations are 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not independent benchmark results; the retrieved settings page shows no publication date. Check the current YouTube table for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than carrying these example rates over to another format.
YouTube lists stereo audio at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 KHz stereo sample rate. The command uses those values. H.264 with AAC is a conservative, broadly supported choice for a straightforward SDR stream; other codecs and HDR workflows have different requirements.

Choose resolution and encoding method to fit the source
| Choice | What it means | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 H.264 | YouTube recommends 3 Mbps video bitrate. | Consider it when the source is modest, upload capacity is limited, or encoding resources are constrained. |
| 1080p30 H.264 | YouTube recommends 5 Mbps video bitrate. | Use it when the source supports the detail and your upload and encoder can sustain it. |
Stream copy (-c copy) |
Copies encoded streams without re-encoding. | It can save compute, but compatibility depends on source codecs, container, timestamps, and output requirements. Inspect and test the file; it is not guaranteed to work for every input. |
| Re-encode | Encodes video and audio to specified output settings, as the example does. | Useful for normalizing settings, but it uses compute and can reduce quality if poorly configured. |
The values in the table are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection or computer can sustain them. Choose a bitrate and resolution using the source quality, available upload capacity, and encoding resources. Do not upscale just to report a larger resolution.
Test before promoting the broadcast, then monitor it
- Before the event, test with motion and audio representative of the actual promotion—not only a static frame or silent clip.
- Start FFmpeg and check the Live Control Room preview for the expected picture, resolution, and audible sound.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and warnings before sharing the event or asking viewers to tune in.
- While live, keep monitoring the dashboard. A running FFmpeg process by itself does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises operators to monitor stream health and review messages during the event. The Live Streaming API’s health status and configuration issue categories include bitrate, codec, audio, and frame-rate problems. Use the warning shown for your actual stream to guide diagnosis; API details are documented at LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API.

End the stream and understand the archive limit
When the promotion is over, stop the FFmpeg encoder and end the event in Live Control Room according to the workflow you chose. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume automatic archiving for a broadcast that runs longer than that. YouTube’s encoder guide describes the live workflow and archive statement.
Rights and monetization still apply to a loop
Putting a promotion on YouTube Live does not grant rights to its footage, music, product imagery, or other content, and using FFmpeg does not change YouTube’s policies. Permission to use material is not by itself a guarantee of YouTube Partner Program eligibility.

YouTube’s monetization policy update dated July 15, 2025 renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material falls under that policy. The policy says monetized content should be original and authentic, and reused content must show meaningful value or difference to qualify under reused-content rules. Copyright is a separate issue. A repeating store promotion should therefore be reviewed both for rights and for whether it meets the channel’s applicable monetization policies; a live format is not an exception. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
