The best fighting-game overlay is the one that leaves the match easy to read. Start with restrained branding and essential alerts; add player names, scores, round details, or controller inputs only when your stream or event needs them. StreamElements and Streamlabs both document ways to add overlays to OBS workflows, but the available evidence does not establish a universal winner or a verified best fighting-game-specific overlay.
What a fighting-game overlay should do
An overlay layers graphics or widgets over the game feed. For a fighting-game stream, its job is to make the broadcast clearer and more recognizable without obscuring the action or useful in-game information.
- Protect the gameplay view. Keep decorative borders, logos, alerts, and chat away from fighters, health bars, timers, and other interface elements viewers need to follow.
- Use only the information the stream needs. Branding and alerts may be enough for casual play. A tournament broadcast may also need player names, a score, round or match details, or controller inputs.
- Make the layout adaptable. Different games and event formats can place important information in different parts of the screen. Check each scene rather than assuming one design suits every game.
There is no verified universal best layout in the available evidence. The right choice depends on your scene, the game, the event information you need to show, and how much setup and customization you want to handle.
Overlay tools documented for OBS workflows
| Tool | Documented workflow | Customization and assets | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamElements | Build an overlay in its editor, copy the overlay URL, and add it to a broadcast-software scene as a browser source. | Its documentation describes alerts, labels, goals, chat, and custom widgets made with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Its gallery presents animated overlays and alerts as well as scenes, widgets, and theme packages. | Consider whether its editor and browser-source workflow suit your setup, and whether you need its custom-widget options. The documentation does not establish that its overlays are specifically designed for fighting-game tournaments. |
| Streamlabs | Its support guide describes finding overlays in a library and setting one up in Streamlabs Desktop or OBS. Its OBS plugin page lists overlays and widgets among its integrated features and describes the plugin as free to download and use. | The documented library can be searched by keyword, color, and type; the plugin includes overlays and widgets. | Consider which application you prefer to set up and manage. The available information does not provide an independent comparison showing that one platform’s overlays perform or look better than the other’s. |
These are documented workflows, not a controlled head-to-head test. Compare them by setup effort, scene and widget control, static versus animated assets, and how easily you can adapt a layout to a particular game or tournament.

Choose the information before choosing the design
Casual gameplay
Begin with a clean game capture. Add modest branding or alerts only if they do not cover the match. Avoid adding a scoreboard or other permanent panel just because a template includes one.
Sets and tournaments
Decide which details viewers need to follow the set: for example, player names, score, round, or match information. If the overlay tool does not provide the event-specific data you need, you may need a separate scene or a custom graphic. The available sources do not establish a maintained, licensed, fighting-game-specific scoreboard that works across games and tournament formats.

Controller-input displays
An input display is a specialized widget, not a substitute for a general overlay. A community post asks about a hitbox or leverless controller skin for an Input Overlay add-on used with Streamlabs or OBS. That question signals a niche customization need; it does not verify a particular skin, its compatibility, or its suitability for an event.
Set up and test the composition
- Capture a representative game scene. Include the game interface and the areas where important action occurs. Identify what must remain visible before placing graphics.
- Choose a starting workflow. With StreamElements, create an overlay, copy its URL, and add that URL as a browser source in the relevant OBS scene. With Streamlabs, search its overlay library by keyword, color, or type, then follow its setup workflow for Streamlabs Desktop or OBS.
- Place and size each element deliberately. Keep gameplay, health bars, timers, and other useful interface details unobstructed. Check both players’ sides of the screen, not just the center.
- Use a dedicated scene when the information changes. A casual-play scene and a tournament scene may have different needs. Keep event-specific details in the scene where they are useful rather than forcing them into every layout.
- Preview with actual gameplay and inspect the stream output. Verify that graphics remain legible, alerts do not hide a decisive moment, and the layout still works when the game or scene changes. No hands-on performance testing is established here, so judge the finished composition in your own broadcast setup.
Should you use a fighting-game-specific overlay?
A community post describes a browser-based tournament overlay for fighting games with an OBS URL workflow. Its maintenance status, supported games, licensing, and suitability for event use are not established, so treat it as an unverified lead rather than a recommended current product. Before relying on a niche project at an event, confirm that it is active, supports your game and format, and can be used under terms that suit your broadcast.

Keep the stream running separately from the overlay
An overlay changes what viewers see; it does not by itself keep a broadcast online. If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel built around uploaded recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and it does not replace an OBS overlay workflow for live gameplay.
