To prevent unwanted black bars, first check whether they are already part of the cartoon file. Then set OBS’s canvas and output to the intended aspect ratio—often 16:9—and choose how the artwork should fit: preserve the full image with a designed background, enlarge it and crop the edges, or stretch it only if distortion is acceptable. Check the final YouTube player, not just the OBS preview; changing bitrate will not remove bars baked into the picture.
Find where the black bars enter the picture
Black bars can come from the cartoon file itself, the way its source is framed in OBS, or unused canvas around an image whose aspect ratio differs from the stream. Check each stage before changing settings.
- Inspect the video file. Pause on a representative frame and look at the image itself. If black margins appear inside the frame, they are part of the source image. Crop or reframe the source before streaming, or use OBS scene composition to conceal them.
- Check the OBS canvas and output. Confirm both use the intended frame shape. OBS gives 1920×1080 and 1280×720 as examples of 16:9 production resolutions. OBS’s Aspect Ratio Guide recommends producing at a 16:9 resolution such as these for best results.
- Inspect the source bounds in the OBS preview. Select the cartoon source and check whether it sits too small, off-center, or inside a differently shaped frame. Resize and position it according to the framing choice you want.
- Test the actual YouTube output. Send a test stream or inspect the encoded output before relying on the continuous broadcast. Check the YouTube player as well as the OBS preview: the final presentation is what viewers see.
Choose how the cartoon should fit the stream
When the source and canvas have different aspect ratios, no framing choice can simultaneously show every part of the image, preserve its geometry, and fill the entire canvas without bands. Decide which outcome matters most.

In OBS, its Scaling/Aspect Ratio Filter documentation describes setting a source’s new resolution or aspect ratio. Use scaling deliberately: OBS cautions that stretching mismatched content can warp or distort it, while enlarging may move image content beyond the preview or canvas. Test the live picture before leaving it running
Check a representative passage with movement and audio, then monitor stream health and inspect the YouTube player. The YouTube live encoder settings guidance recommends testing before going live with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health. Encoder settings and scene composition solve different problems: a bitrate change will not remove black margins embedded in the source image.
The cited OBS and YouTube guidance covers general aspect ratio and live-encoder practice; it does not establish a special aspect ratio or separate black-bar rule for 24/7 streams. The same source, scene, and output checks apply to a continuous broadcast.
