There is no evidence-based “best” Indian cloud region for relaying a Raspberry Pi stream to YouTube. Choose by testing candidate regions from the Pi’s actual network: hold the stream settings constant, compare sustained stability and YouTube stream health, then weigh cost and resilience. Distance from the Pi is only a screening clue; it does not establish the best route to YouTube ingestion.
First confirm what the cloud host will do
A relay that forwards an already encoded stream has different compute needs from a host that also encodes or transcodes it. The right instance therefore depends on your software and workload, not just on the region. The Pi model, stream resolution, bitrate and whether encoding happens in the cloud are not specified here, so do not assume a particular instance size.
Before comparing locations, identify the exact compute, network, storage and any managed streaming services your design needs. A provider’s regional list does not mean every service or instance family is available in every listed region. Confirm service availability, account access and current pricing before deployment.
Which Indian regions can you shortlist?
These provider listings establish candidate locations, not which one routes best to YouTube from your Pi’s internet connection.

Benchmark candidates from the Pi’s real network
The decisive question is how each candidate performs from the network where the Pi actually runs to the intended YouTube ingest endpoint. The ISP, routing and endpoint behavior affect the result, so a generic speed test or map distance cannot settle it.

- List deployable candidates. Remove regions that lack the required instance, network, storage or managed service, or that your account cannot access.
- Keep the trial configuration fixed. Use the same protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate for every region. Otherwise, a change in stream settings can be mistaken for a regional difference.
- Test the route and sustained upload. From the Pi’s actual access network, record route latency, sustained upload throughput, packet loss or interruptions, and the test time for each candidate. Repeat at representative times and operating conditions.
- Send a representative private or test stream. Use realistic movement and audio, then monitor YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators and messages. A brief successful connection is not proof of stable long-running delivery.
- Repeat and compare the evidence. Keep a log of region, protocol, bitrate, test time, latency, throughput, interruptions and YouTube health. Prefer repeatable results over a single favorable run.
- Compare cost and resilience among candidates that pass. Choose the lowest-cost option that meets your measured stability and recovery requirements, and retest after material provider, route or YouTube ingestion changes.
Size the uplink and choose an ingestion protocol
Leave upload headroom
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the combined primary and backup stream bitrates. Apply that to the connection that actually carries the stream; do not treat a peak speed-test result as sustained capacity. YouTube recommends selecting a quality the connection can sustain, testing before the event and monitoring stream health. Use its current encoder table for the bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than relying on a guessed universal setting: YouTube encoder settings and live-streaming tips.
RTMPS for ordinary live content
Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL and specifies port 443 to a valid YouTube ingest endpoint. YouTube identifies RTMPS as a good choice for ordinary user content, particularly when low latency matters. Verify that the relay host and network permit the required outbound connection. HLS is a workflow choice, not a shortcut to lower latency
YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments. Google’s HLS ingestion guide recommends media segments of one to four seconds; shorter segments can reduce latency but increase rebuffering risk and reduce encoding efficiency. Choose HLS for supported workflow or codec needs, not on the assumption that it makes a relay faster. YouTube HLS ingestion help · Google HLS ingestion guide
Separate viewer latency from the relay route
YouTube defines stream latency as the time from camera capture to viewer playback. Its help page says most viewers of low-latency streams experience less than 10 seconds, and most viewers of ultra-low-latency streams less than five seconds. These are descriptions of viewer experience, not guarantees for a cloud region or measurements of the Pi-to-ingest route. Ultra-low latency reduces the playback buffer and can expose network or encoder problems as buffering; it is also unavailable for 4K. YouTube live-stream latency help

For region selection, measure the relay’s route and delivery stability. Do not use a viewer-latency setting as a substitute for that measurement.

- Picking the nearest city by map distance: shortlist it, but benchmark from the Pi’s ISP to YouTube ingestion before choosing.
- Trusting a generic speed test: test sustained upload to the intended ingest path and inspect YouTube stream health under the actual stream settings.
- Changing settings between regional trials: repeat with the same protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate so the comparison isolates location.
- Choosing on latency alone: also compare upload stability, interruptions, YouTube health, service availability, total cost and resilience.
- Assuming a listed region includes your required service: confirm instance or service availability and account access in the exact region before provisioning.
- Using HLS expecting lower latency than RTMP: YouTube documents higher HLS latency; choose it for workflow needs and account for segment behavior.
- Seeing buffering despite a nearby host: check the stream-health messages, sustained upload and headroom, then test a more reliable quality or a different candidate route.
