You can prepare a Raspberry Pi headlessly, connect to it over SSH, and use FFmpeg to send a local video to YouTube Live in a loop. The essential stages are to configure Raspberry Pi OS Lite and network access before first boot, confirm your YouTube channel can go live, then test the exact video, settings, and connection before leaving the Pi unattended. A command template is a starting point, not a guarantee: Pi models and FFmpeg builds differ, so verify available encoders and test performance on your own hardware.

What you need before starting

  • A Raspberry Pi with a power supply, microSD card, and a way to connect to your network by Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
  • Another computer to run Raspberry Pi Imager and connect to the Pi remotely.
  • A local video file that you have the rights to stream, with enough storage available on the Pi.
  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to go live. Check in YouTube Studio before preparing an unattended setup; access and restrictions are account-dependent.
  • A stable upstream internet connection. Choose a bitrate that leaves headroom on your actual connection, rather than assuming the advertised speed is continuously available.

For a documentary channel, make sure you have permission to livestream the footage, music, narration, and other material in the recording. YouTube says a live stream can be terminated for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes; having a copy of a file does not establish streaming rights. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Prepare Raspberry Pi OS and network access without a monitor

Raspberry Pi recommends using Raspberry Pi Imager to install the operating system and set up credentials, networking, and remote access before boot. Raspberry Pi OS Lite is suited to headless use. Its documentation describes a headless Pi as operating without a monitor, keyboard, or mouse. See Raspberry Pi’s headless setup instructions.

  1. Use Raspberry Pi Imager on another computer. Select your Raspberry Pi model and Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Follow Imager’s prompts to select the microSD card.
  2. Set initial access before writing the card. In the Imager customization options, configure a username and password. Set the Wi-Fi country and network credentials if using wireless, and enable SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect. Keep the password private; do not rely on an assumed default account.
  3. Choose Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Ethernet avoids dependence on a wireless link, but the result still depends on the router, cable, and internet service. Wi-Fi is convenient; check that the particular Pi model and wireless adapter support the band you plan to use. Raspberry Pi notes that not every model or adapter supports 5 GHz.
  4. Write and boot the card. Insert it in the Pi, connect the network and power, and give the device time to start.
  5. Find the Pi on your network and connect. Check the router’s connected-device list or use the hostname you configured. From a computer with an SSH client, connect with ssh USERNAME@HOSTNAME, replacing both placeholders with your configured username and the Pi’s hostname or address. Accept the host key only if you recognize the device, then enter the password when prompted.
  6. Update and install FFmpeg. After connecting, use the distribution’s package manager to install FFmpeg, then check ffmpeg -version. Package names and available builds can vary by OS release. Confirm the installed command supports the options and encoders you intend to use; Raspberry Pi performance is not guaranteed by the fact that an encoder is listed.

If you cannot connect, first confirm the Pi has power and network access and that you enabled SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect in Imager. Raspberry Pi OS Lite does not provide a desktop for VNC; use the remote access method you enabled. Raspberry Pi also documents a manual fallback using an empty ssh file and a userconf.txt file with a username and encrypted password on the boot partition, but Imager customization is the more direct route because it can configure network access and credentials together.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using YouTube’s encoder workflow. Confirm that the channel can go live and review any account-specific prompts or restrictions.
  2. Copy the ingest server URL and stream key. Use the values shown for the stream in Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  3. Keep the key secret. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like: they identify where the encoder sends its feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Do not publish the key in a script, screenshot, shell command shared with others, or source-control repository. If you think it has leaked, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

For a reusable setup, store the key in a private configuration file rather than a script that may be shared. Restrict that file’s permissions so other local users cannot read it. Do not put the actual key in the example command below.

Choose a format and bitrate the Pi can sustain

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

For H.264, YouTube’s recommended bitrate examples are 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and 0.4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees for a particular Pi or internet connection. Use a lower resolution or bitrate if the upload path cannot sustain the chosen rate, and validate with a test. The available evidence does not establish which Raspberry Pi model can encode a particular resolution in real time.

  • Inspect your source first. Find out its resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and whether it contains audio. An already compatible file may be stream-copied, reducing processing work, but compatibility, timestamps, and audio mapping still matter.
  • Decide whether to transcode. Transcoding can make the output fit the chosen settings but increases CPU work. Check which encoders your installed FFmpeg build supports and test on the exact Pi. Do not assume a hardware encoder or a given performance level.
  • Use the stream settings as a ceiling, not a target to chase. A documentary that is mostly static may not need the same bitrate as fast-moving footage, but the configured encoder still needs to produce a stable feed. Test representative motion and audio, as YouTube recommends.

Build and test the FFmpeg loop command

FFmpeg’s command line places input options before the input they affect, then output options before the output destination. The loop option is an input option for a local file, so it belongs before that file’s -i. Confirm loop-option support and syntax with the installed version’s ffmpeg -h or manual before using it. For file input sent as a live stream, -re makes FFmpeg read at the file’s intended pace rather than pushing the file as quickly as possible. See FFmpeg documentation.

This is a template, not a universal copy-and-run command. Replace the filename, endpoint, key placeholder, and encoding choices. Use the RTMPS server URL supplied for your stream where available, and confirm how YouTube expects the key to be appended for that endpoint in Live Control Room. Google explains YouTube RTMPS ingestion at Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/home/USERNAME/video.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 3M -minrate 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"

In this example, the 3 Mbps video bitrate corresponds to YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p at 30 fps; the example does not set output dimensions, so it does not itself guarantee 720p. -g 60 at 30 fps requests a 60-frame, approximately two-second keyframe interval. The example assumes an FFmpeg build with libx264, a video file with an audio stream, and an endpoint that accepts the shown URL form. If any assumption is wrong, adjust the command rather than treating it as a validated Pi configuration.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

If the source has no audio, remove the audio options and make the silent output intentional; if it has multiple tracks or unusual codecs, inspect and map streams explicitly. If the source is already compatible, a stream-copy variant may use -c copy instead of encoding options, but that can fail when the source’s codecs, timestamps, or container do not suit YouTube ingest. Start by testing rather than assuming copy mode will work.

For a one-time test, run the command over SSH and watch FFmpeg’s output for connection or encoder errors. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, then play the live stream from a separate device. Do not rely on the process merely starting: test with the same media, audio, resolution, bitrate, Pi, and network path intended for continuous use.

Keep the stream running and recover remotely

Once the test is healthy, you can arrange for the process to restart after a failure or reboot. A systemd service with restart behavior is a common operational approach, but the exact unit depends on where you store the command and key. Keep credentials out of publicly readable files, and make sure logs do not expose the key. This is an operational pattern, not a guarantee that YouTube or the home connection will remain available.

  • Check FFmpeg and service logs over SSH. Look for authentication failures, unsupported encoders, file-path errors, or repeated connection drops.
  • Check YouTube’s Live Control Room. Use its preview and stream-health indicators to distinguish a local process that is running from a feed YouTube is receiving correctly.
  • After a power or network interruption, reconnect remotely. Inspect the process or service, confirm the Pi has returned to the network, and restart the service if necessary.
  • If the key may have been exposed, reset it. Update the private configuration with the new key before restarting FFmpeg.

For a Pi in India, consider the reliability of the actual home or studio power supply and upstream connection during the hours the channel is meant to run. No setup can compensate for a power cut or an internet outage; test recovery in the conditions where you will operate it.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
SSH cannot find or reach the Pi The Pi has not joined the network, its address changed, or SSH was not enabled. Check power and the router’s client list; verify the hostname or current address; confirm SSH was enabled in Imager customization.
YouTube does not show a preview or rejects the feed Wrong server URL or key, key formatting mismatch, or unsupported output. Copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, keep the key private, and verify the endpoint’s expected format and supported codecs.
FFmpeg reports an unknown option or encoder The installed FFmpeg version/build does not support the option or encoder used. Check ffmpeg -version and the installed help output; use a supported build or option. Do not assume all Pi packages include the same encoders.
The stream stutters, drops, or shows poor health Insufficient upload capacity, unstable network, or encoding load beyond what the Pi sustains. Lower the output bitrate or resolution, test Ethernet versus Wi-Fi in your setup, and check CPU and FFmpeg logs while sending representative content.
Video loops but audio is absent or rejected The file may have no audio stream, or its audio codec/stream mapping may not suit the output. Inspect the file’s streams; explicitly encode supported audio if present, or omit audio options for an intentionally silent stream.
FFmpeg starts but the live stream ends The process stopped, power or network failed, or YouTube ended the stream. Check SSH access, service and FFmpeg logs, YouTube’s status, and power/network conditions. Configure and test restart behavior before unattended operation.
