For a 720p YouTube Live rerun, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps at 30 or 60 fps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 8 Mbps at either frame rate with H.264. The listed minimums are 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 3 Mbps for H.264; they are not guarantees of good-looking, stable gameplay. On a slow or variable upload, choose a bitrate your connection can sustain, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test with representative gameplay before making the rerun public.
Which 720p bitrate should you use?
YouTube’s live-ingest table gives the same bitrate guidance for 720p30 and 720p60. Choose based on the codec your encoder supports and the stable upload capacity available to the stream—not just the speed shown for downloads.

These are YouTube’s listed live-stream ingest settings, not a promise that every encoder, game, or network will produce the same visual result at a given rate. The recommended bitrate is not a mandatory minimum. If your connection cannot reliably sustain the recommended value with headroom, lowering the bitrate can help stability, though it may reduce detail. A demanding, fast-moving game can make compression more noticeable, so judge the result with your own gameplay rather than assuming a minimum setting will look good. 30 fps or 60 fps on a limited connection?
YouTube lists the same bitrate recommendations for 720p30 and 720p60, but that does not mean 60 fps is always the practical choice on a slow upload. If the connection fluctuates or cannot sustain your selected bitrate, try 30 fps and test the same kind of motion you expect in the rerun. Choose the smoothness you want only if the stream remains stable under real conditions.

Calculate the upload capacity to reserve
YouTube recommends leaving 20% room beyond the stream’s bitrate requirement and says the total bitrate, including primary and backup streams, must fit the available outbound capacity. As a practical calculation from that guidance, divide the intended total stream bitrate by 0.8 to estimate the upload capacity to reserve. For example, a 3 Mbps stream calls for about 3.75 Mbps of available upload capacity before other network use is considered. That 3.75 Mbps figure is a calculation, not a separate bitrate published by YouTube.
Account for other people and devices using the connection, as well as any backup stream. A speed test should measure upload: a strong download result does not establish that your outbound stream can be sustained. YouTube’s advice is in its streaming tips.

Set up a representative test before the rerun
- Check the VOD and encoder. Confirm the video is 720p and choose an available codec. Set the output to 30 or 60 fps, then use the corresponding bitrate from YouTube’s live-ingest table. If the connection is limited, begin with a bitrate it can sustain with the recommended headroom rather than forcing the recommended rate.
- Use YouTube’s live-encoder requirements. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1, and CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Apply the settings supported by your encoder. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Connect the encoder to the intended YouTube stream. Use the stream key for that stream in your encoder. Treat the key as private; do not publish or share it. YouTube’s walkthrough for encoder-based streaming is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Test privately or unlisted. Run a test with audio and gameplay motion similar to the planned rerun. Watch YouTube’s stream health and the encoder for instability, then adjust bitrate or frame rate and test again. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement and monitoring stream health; see YouTube live streaming tips.
- Choose latency for the viewing experience. For a passive rerun, normal latency is a reasonable default unless interaction matters. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering; DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during the stream. Review YouTube’s live stream settings.
Do not confuse live ingest with uploading a finished video
A prerecorded VOD broadcast as a live stream still uses live-ingest settings while it is being broadcast. If you later upload a finished 720p video file, YouTube gives separate upload encoding recommendations: 5 Mbps for standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 7.5 Mbps for high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). Protect the rerun and its archive
If you need a copy of the broadcast, keep a local recording as a backup. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A local archive matters especially if a long rerun could approach or exceed that limit. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Troubleshoot a slow or unstable upload
- The stream drops frames or becomes unstable: Check upload capacity, not download speed. Recalculate with YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance, include other network use and any backup stream, then reduce bitrate if needed and test again.
- The recommended bitrate will not fit: Do not treat it as compulsory. Try a sustainable lower bitrate and, if necessary, 30 fps rather than 60 fps; retest with representative gameplay and audio.
- The test looks acceptable but the public rerun does not: Compare the conditions. Other network use or different gameplay motion may change the result. Repeat a representative test and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup.
- The broadcast archive is missing: Check its duration. YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours, so retain a local recording when the archive is important.
