Yes—an M2 Mac mini can run OBS and send a live feed to YouTube. To build a 24/7 channel, enable YouTube Live, create a live event, connect OBS with its stream key, choose an output your upload connection can sustain, and test the complete setup before making it public. Compatibility does not guarantee uninterrupted operation: a local setup still depends on the Mac, power, OBS, and internet connection, and YouTube and OBS guidance does not establish guaranteed recovery after an outage.
Before you set up the Mac
Make sure YouTube Live is available
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned launch. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming tips and encoder setup instructions for account readiness and event creation.
Check the Mac and OBS combination
OBS supports Apple Silicon on macOS and documents Apple VideoToolbox H.264 streaming on Apple Silicon. Apple’s specifications for the 2023 M2 Mac mini list an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 100 GB/s memory bandwidth, hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC media engines, and Gigabit Ethernet. Those specifications and OBS compatibility make the Mac a plausible host; they do not prove that every scene, source count, resolution, or environment will run reliably all day. OBS cautions that a compatible system alone does not guarantee streaming capability.
Install OBS using the official Mac installation instructions. Supported macOS and OBS combinations change; check the current OBS macOS versions page before installing or upgrading. The page was updated July 29, 2026 and listed OBS 32.2.1 for Apple Silicon on macOS 15 Sequoia, 14 Sonoma, and 13 Ventura at that time.

Set up the YouTube event and OBS
- Enable live streaming and create an event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or select the event, and choose its stream key. YouTube supports reusable custom stream keys and provides auto-start and auto-stop settings. Confirm the event’s intended visibility and schedule before going live.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, then enter the key and server details as prompted. Keep the key private: it authorizes a feed to the event. Use RTMPS if the selected YouTube server and OBS configuration offer it.
- Build and inspect your scene. Add the video and audio sources your continuous program requires, then check that the scene remains correct over time. Test representative motion and sound rather than relying on a static desktop preview.
- Choose output settings for the stream you can sustain. Start with H.264 using OBS’s Apple Silicon streaming path, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, progressive square-pixel SDR output, and AAC stereo audio where appropriate. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds. Its guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for the codec and mode you select; do not transfer H.264 figures to another codec.
- Connect and start the OBS stream. Click Start Streaming and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before you make the event public or rely on it. Use YouTube’s event controls to start or stop the event as intended.
Choose a resolution and bitrate
There is no single bitrate that fits every 24/7 broadcast. YouTube’s recommended H.264 rates include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those figures are specific to H.264 and the stated frame rates; other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs have different recommendations and minimums in YouTube’s table.

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality or minimum connection speeds. Run an upload-speed test, then choose an output with room for network variation instead of planning to consume all measured upload capacity. YouTube does not specify a universal headroom amount. A wired Gigabit Ethernet connection is available on the 2023 M2 Mac mini, but Ethernet by itself cannot guarantee stable internet service.

YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 ingestion, with up to 60 fps. OBS’s documented Apple Silicon streaming support covers H.264; do not assume every codec YouTube accepts is exposed by your OBS configuration or selected encoder. For a straightforward SDR setup, H.264 is a well-supported starting point.
Test the channel before relying on it
- Run the stream with the same OBS scene, resolution, frame rate, audio, and representative motion you plan to use.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Check that the audio is audible and synchronized and that the picture behaves as expected.
- Check the public watch page and, if relevant to your audience, view it on a mobile device.
- Repeat the test long enough to observe your actual workload and connection; basic Mac or OBS compatibility is not a substitute for testing your setup.
YouTube advises testing before going live. Its latency guidance also warns that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. A passive 24/7 documentary channel may have little reason to prioritize the lowest latency if viewers are not interacting in real time.

What happens if the internet, power, or OBS stops?
A Mac-based OBS stream is a local setup: if the Mac loses power, OBS stops, or the internet connection fails, the feed can be interrupted. The YouTube and OBS instructions cited here do not establish a guaranteed unattended restart or recovery procedure for all of those failures. Do not treat a successful test as proof that the stream will automatically resume after every interruption. Before making uptime promises, verify the recovery behavior you need and how it works for your particular event and system.
The same sources do not establish the current maximum duration for one continuous YouTube event or whether a 24/7 event will remain fully archived. If you need a complete recording or an event that runs indefinitely, verify YouTube’s current event and archive behavior rather than assuming the stream’s duration and saved replay are unlimited.

Only stream material you have the rights to use on YouTube. A video being available online, or having been recorded by you, does not by itself establish permission to broadcast every included song, clip, image, or other copyrighted element. Review the rights for the full program and the current YouTube rules before leaving a loop running continuously. An uninterrupted feed is not a substitute for permissions.
