To show chat beside a prerecorded YouTube stream after it ends, send the video to YouTube as a live broadcast, enable live chat for that broadcast, and leave Live chat replay enabled on its archive. YouTube says replay is on by default for live streams, but check the finished archive: editing it in YouTube’s video editor removes chat replay. This is different from DVR, which lets viewers pause or rewind while the broadcast is still live.
How to set up live chat replay
Live chat replay displays the conversation alongside the archived broadcast, in sync with how the chat appeared live. It is an archive feature: viewers do not need to be present during the broadcast to see the replay, but there must be an archive to view.
- Choose how to send the prerecorded video live. You can use a local encoder to play a looping playlist and send it to YouTube Live, or use a continuous-stream service. With a local setup, the computer, media, network connection, and streaming process must remain running. A cloud service runs the stream process in its own environment instead.
- Create or configure the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Make sure live chat is enabled for the stream. YouTube’s live-chat guidance says chat is unavailable for a stream designated as made for kids.
- Leave Live chat replay enabled on the archive. YouTube says replay is on by default for live streams. To check or change it for a specific archived video, open YouTube Studio, go to the Live tab, select the video’s Customization tab, and check the Live chat replay setting.
- Verify the result on the YouTube watch page. Open the archived broadcast and confirm that chat replay appears alongside it. YouTube says chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players, so do not assume viewers watching an embed will see the replay.
If chat replay matters, do not edit the archived stream in YouTube’s video editor: YouTube says streams edited there will not have chat replay.
Live chat replay is not DVR
| Feature | When it works | What viewers can do |
|---|---|---|
| Live chat replay | Alongside an archived live broadcast | See the chat as it appeared during the live stream. |
| DVR | While the broadcast is still live | Pause and rewind the active stream, then continue watching from the paused point. |
YouTube warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That limitation concerns rewinding during the live broadcast; it does not establish whether the eventual archive or its chat replay will be available.

What changes with a 24/7 broadcast?
A stream that runs continuously is not necessarily equivalent to a series of short broadcasts. YouTube’s materials do not establish a universal guarantee that one indefinitely running stream will produce an archive with chat replay. If a completed archive is essential, plan how and when the broadcast will end, then check the resulting archive and replay on its YouTube watch page.
Archive availability is a separate consideration from chat replay. YouTube’s Live API documentation describes an interaction between archive and DVR settings for immediate playback availability after a broadcast ends: both archive and DVR must be enabled for the documented condition. Do not treat that API behavior as a guarantee of an archive for an indefinitely long stream.

Local encoder or cloud playout?
These are different ways to keep prerecorded video going out as a live broadcast, not guarantees of how YouTube will handle the archive.
| Consideration | Local encoder | Continuous-stream service |
|---|---|---|
| Where the stream process runs | On your computer | In the provider’s environment, subject to its offering |
| What you maintain | A capable computer, the source media, a network connection, and the running encoder process | The provider’s tools and service; YouTube archive behavior still needs checking |
| Operational control | You control the local playback and encoder setup | Control depends on the provider’s tools and policies |
| Archive and replay | Must be planned and verified with YouTube’s long-stream limitations in mind | Must still be planned and verified with YouTube; the service cannot guarantee YouTube’s archive behavior |
A local streaming computer is relevant only if you choose to host the encoder yourself. Cloud playout can avoid maintaining a dedicated streaming computer, but you rely on the provider’s actual capabilities and operating conditions.

- No chat replay on the archive: In YouTube Studio, open Live, select the video’s Customization tab, and check that Live chat replay is enabled. Also check whether the archive was edited in YouTube’s video editor, which removes replay.
- Viewers cannot see chat in an embed: YouTube says chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. Direct viewers to the YouTube watch page.
- Chat is unavailable during the broadcast: Check whether the stream is designated as made for kids; YouTube’s live-chat guidance says chat is unavailable for those streams.
- Viewers cannot rewind the whole broadcast: DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. This is not the same as archived chat replay.
- No completed archive appears after a continuous stream: Confirm the broadcast’s archive and DVR settings, and plan how the stream will end. YouTube does not establish a universal archive guarantee for a single indefinitely running broadcast; verify the outcome on the watch page.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
A prerecorded video sent as a live broadcast is still content published on YouTube. Before looping it, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the footage, music, narration, and other included material, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules. Live chat replay preserves viewers’ messages alongside the archive; enabling it does not resolve rights issues or guarantee that a stream or archive will remain available.
