Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo resume a YouTube stream after a VPS reboot, run your encoder as a boot-enabled service and configure it to restart after failure. Then verify two separate things: that the encoder is sending media to YouTube and that the broadcast itself is live. Restarting FFmpeg alone does not guarantee viewers can see the stream.
What has to recover after a reboot
A reliable setup has two layers. The VPS service manager starts the encoder when the server boots and can restart it if the process exits. Separately, the encoder must have a working input, network connection, YouTube stream URL, and stream key. YouTube’s Live Streaming API treats the incoming stream and the broadcast as separate resources, so a running encoder is not proof that the audience-facing broadcast is live: YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
The exact service configuration depends on your VPS operating system, init system, FFmpeg command, input source, protocol, and whether you are using a scheduled broadcast or a continuously managed workflow. The example below illustrates the approach for a systemd-based Linux server; adapt it to your actual setup rather than treating it as a universal unit file.
Configure YouTube and the encoder
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, create or schedule a broadcast, and obtain the stream URL and stream key for that stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions.
- Configure the encoder. Set its input and output to the YouTube URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not put it in a public repository, exposed logs, or shell history. Restrict access to the service configuration, and rotate the key if it is exposed.
- Choose the intended ingest protocol. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. The RTMP URL may be displayed by default in Live Control Room, so select and verify the RTMPS URL if you intend to use it, and confirm your encoder supports it. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. YouTube’s workflow is to start the encoder and, for a scheduled stream, wait for the preview before selecting Go live in Live Control Room when the stream is ready. A boot service can restart the encoder, but it cannot be assumed to perform this scheduled-broadcast action for you.
Run FFmpeg as a boot-enabled systemd service
On a Linux VPS that uses systemd, create a service unit that runs your real FFmpeg command. A community Ubuntu example demonstrates this pattern with Restart=always and systemctl enable --now; it is an example, not an official or universally tested configuration: community systemd example. Replace the command below with your own tested command and paths.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Create the unit. Put a unit file such as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.servicein place. At minimum, it needs a[Service]section with the correctExecStartcommand and a restart policy appropriate to the workload, plus an[Install]section that enables startup at boot. Use an appropriate service user and ensure it can read the input and configuration. - Protect credentials. Avoid embedding the key in a world-readable unit file. Store configuration with restrictive permissions and ensure logs do not disclose the key. The exact secure configuration method varies by operating system and deployment.
- Load and enable the service. After creating or changing the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions, then enable and start the service. The community example uses
systemctl enable --now; check your distribution’s systemd documentation for exact administration details. - Check service state and logs. Inspect the service status and recent journal output. Confirm FFmpeg remains active and that its logs show the expected input and output behavior, without exposing credentials.
A restart policy handles a process that exits; it does not necessarily detect a process that remains running while its input is stalled or its output is no longer reaching YouTube. More elaborate supervision can monitor input health and ingest or broadcast state, but the right mechanism depends on the workflow. Avoid a rapid, unbounded restart loop: inspect failure logs and set restart behavior and any backoff with your workload in mind.
Distinguish boot recovery from network reconnection
These are separate failure cases. A service manager starts FFmpeg after the VPS has booted or restarts it after a process exit. FFmpeg’s protocol reconnect options address certain network errors while the FFmpeg process is already running. They do not start FFmpeg at boot or make a YouTube broadcast live.

FFmpeg documents reconnect controls for applicable protocols, including options for retrying certain network errors, treating end-of-file as an error for live or endless sources, and limiting retry attempts or delays. Which options apply depends on the input/output protocol and installed FFmpeg version. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for your version before adding flags; do not copy retry settings blindly.
Test recovery and verify the broadcast
- Arrange a controlled test. Reboot the VPS at a time when an interruption is acceptable, rather than relying on an untested configuration during an important broadcast.
- Confirm the service starts. Check that the service is enabled for boot and that its state and logs show FFmpeg starting after the VPS returns.
- Confirm media reaches YouTube. In Live Control Room, check for the incoming preview and inspect the encoder logs for input, output, or connection errors.
- Check the broadcast state. Verify whether the broadcast is actually live and visible as intended. A scheduled stream may need the Go live action after preview returns. The YouTube stream resource represents transmission; the broadcast resource represents the broadcast itself.
- Repeat for the failure you need to handle. A planned reboot tests boot startup, not every network interruption, unavailable input, or YouTube lifecycle condition. Test those separately if unattended recovery from them matters.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is guidance about archiving after a stream ends, not a promise that a stream will reconnect or resume after a VPS reboot: YouTube encoder and live-stream guidance.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg works when started manually but not after reboot | The service is not enabled for boot, or its unit configuration is invalid. | Check the service’s enabled state, systemd status, unit definitions, paths, and permissions. |
| The service starts, then stops again | FFmpeg exits because of a missing input, invalid option, unreadable file, permission issue, or configuration error. | Inspect service and FFmpeg logs; verify the command works under the service user, not only in an interactive shell. |
| FFmpeg stays active but YouTube receives no usable media | The input may be stale, the output connection may have failed, or reconnect settings may not suit the protocol. | Check input health, URL and key, protocol support, network errors, and the installed FFmpeg version’s applicable reconnect options. |
| YouTube shows ingest or preview, but viewers cannot watch | The broadcast may not be live, may be scheduled, or may have a different visibility/state than expected. | Check preview, broadcast state, visibility, and whether Live Control Room requires Go live. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | A credential was placed in a public file, repository, command history, or accessible log. | Rotate the key in YouTube Studio and update the protected service configuration. |
