On Ubuntu, use OBS Studio with its VLC Video source to play your property-tour MP4 files in order and send them to YouTube Live. Install VLC as well as OBS, turn shuffle off, confirm the playlist loop setting, then test the full sequence—including transitions and audio—before the broadcast. The steps below cover the local-computer method and a cloud alternative.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu computer that can play the tour files and encode a live stream. OBS and VLC packaging and compatibility can vary by Ubuntu release and installation method.
- The property-tour MP4 files, arranged in the order you want viewers to see them.
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; check YouTube’s current requirements before scheduling.
- Permission to broadcast every video and audio element in the files, including music or other recorded sound.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream settings.
For a multi-file sequence, OBS’s VLC Video source is the appropriate choice: OBS documents that it can play a playlist, supports MP4, and loops the playlist by default with shuffle off by default. VLC must be installed and visible to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If OBS cannot find VLC—particularly with a sandboxed OBS installation—review the packaging-specific setup for your Ubuntu release rather than assuming the files or playlist are faulty.
Install OBS Studio and VLC
Install OBS Studio
Use the current OBS instructions for your Ubuntu release. OBS’s Linux installation page documents a PPA and apt route for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer, but that page is dated 2021; do not treat its command as the only current installation method. Check the page and your Ubuntu packaging before installing: OBS Studio Linux installation instructions.
Install VLC
Install VLC using a method compatible with the way you installed OBS. Then launch OBS and confirm the VLC Video source is available. On a 64-bit OBS installation, use 64-bit VLC. If you installed OBS as a sandboxed package, VLC may need additional setup to be accessible to it; the exact requirement depends on the package and is not established as one universal Ubuntu step.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build and check the MP4 playlist in OBS
- Create a scene: In OBS, create or select the scene that will hold the tour. Add a VLC Video source, then add the MP4 files in the intended viewing order.
- Set playback behavior: Keep shuffle off for a planned property-tour sequence. OBS documents playlist looping as on by default; check the source’s controls so the sequence behaves as intended.
- Fit the image: Match the OBS canvas and output dimensions to the footage as closely as practical. Preview the result for cropping, black bars, or scaling that makes important property details hard to see.
- Check sound: Play the sequence and inspect OBS’s audio meters. Confirm the levels are audible without clipping, and that audio starts and ends as expected when a file changes.
- Test every transition: Preview the complete playlist, including the end of one MP4 and start of the next. OBS’s documentation does not guarantee gapless transitions for every combination of MP4 files, so verify your own files rather than promising seamless playback.
If you only need to play a single file, OBS also documents a Media Source. For a playlist of multiple files, VLC Video is the better fit because its source controls are designed for a playlist, including loop and shuffle behavior. See OBS media sources documentation.
Create the YouTube Live broadcast and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create or schedule an encoder stream in the Live Control Room. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming.
- Copy the ingest details. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen. If it is exposed, YouTube documents resetting it.
- Choose a supported connection and encoding setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS where available. For encoder settings, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a codec, resolution, and bitrate supported by YouTube that your computer can encode and your connection can upload reliably. See YouTube encoder settings.
- Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping 20% upload bandwidth capacity available beyond the stream’s bitrate. Avoid choosing a bitrate that consumes nearly all of a variable home connection’s upload capacity.
- Start OBS streaming and check the preview. Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, review the preview and click Go live there when ready. YouTube recommends testing ahead of the event and checking audio and video quality. See YouTube encoder guidance and YouTube live streaming tips.
Choose stream settings that fit the footage and connection
There is no single bitrate that is right for every property-tour file or Ubuntu computer. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the output resolution and frame rate you select. Keep the stream within the machine’s encoding capacity and the connection’s sustained upload capacity, with YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Prefer RTMPS where available, set CBR, and use YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds).

For this prerecorded playlist workflow, OBS sends the video as an encoder stream. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, but characterizes it as a specialized option with additional configuration and higher latency; it is not needed for the basic OBS playlist method.
End the broadcast and understand the archive
When the tour is finished, end the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room and stop streaming in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. If retaining the broadcast is important, confirm its status in YouTube Studio after the stream rather than assuming every longer stream will be archived automatically.

Troubleshooting common problems
VLC Video is missing or cannot play files
- Likely cause: VLC is not installed, OBS cannot access the VLC installation, or the VLC and OBS architectures do not match.
- Try: Confirm VLC is installed, use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS, and check setup guidance for the specific OBS package type. A sandboxed build may need extra access or a compatible installation route.
The files play in the wrong order or repeat unexpectedly
- Likely cause: The playlist order or shuffle/loop controls do not match the intended broadcast.
- Try: Reorder the VLC Video playlist, turn shuffle off, and check whether looping is enabled. Preview the end of the list to confirm what happens next.
A transition has a pause, black frame, or audio change
- Likely cause: The particular MP4 files do not transition cleanly together or have different image or audio characteristics.
- Try: Test the entire sequence in OBS before going live. Adjust the scene’s output dimensions if needed, inspect audio levels, and do not rely on gapless playback unless your own test confirms it.
YouTube does not receive the OBS stream
- Likely cause: The stream URL or key is incorrect, the stream has not been created in YouTube Studio, or the encoder cannot sustain the selected settings.
- Try: Verify the URL and key in OBS against the current Live Control Room details, check the broadcast status and preview, and reduce settings if the computer or upload connection is struggling. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
The preview is unstable or the broadcast drops
- Likely cause: Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or the computer is overloaded encoding the stream.
- Try: Lower the bitrate or output demands, close unnecessary workloads, and preserve the upload headroom YouTube recommends. Test under conditions similar to the planned broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the aim is to keep a YouTube stream running without leaving the Ubuntu computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos and playlists. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
