Its central argument—that GDP is not enough to measure economic success—has force, but Alex Fiedler’s review finds the documentary less convincing when it comes to explaining how its alternative would be built in practice.
What is Purpose: A Wellbeing Economies Film about?
Directed by Martin H. Oetting, the 2024 documentary follows political economist Katherine Trebeck and Italian politician Lorenzo Fioramonti as they work to advance an economy organized around people’s and the planet’s wellbeing, rather than the pursuit of GDP growth as its overriding goal. The official film synopsis frames this as a call to rethink what economies are for, and describes Trebeck and Fioramonti as central figures in the wellbeing-economy movement (official film site).
Rather than presenting itself as a policy handbook, the film follows the political effort: building alliances, working through institutions and confronting the limits advocates encounter. Fiedler’s review describes its opening as a broad concern about capitalism’s direction, followed by an introduction to GDP’s role in policymaking and a character-led account of attempts to establish wellbeing economies. The review also identifies Maja Göpel, Nicola Sturgeon and Joseph Stiglitz among the people featured.
Does the film show a path beyond GDP?
It makes the destination easier to grasp than the route. The film’s proposition is that economic decisions should be judged more directly by their consequences for human and planetary wellbeing, rather than treating GDP growth as the main measure of success. That is a meaningful change in emphasis, but the distinction between a compelling goal and an implementable program matters: the former does not, by itself, specify what governments should do or how they should weigh competing choices.

Fiedler’s central criticism is that the documentary’s expansive diagnosis of capitalism and global problems is not matched by an equally detailed account of policies or practical steps that could deliver its alternative. He characterizes the film as “heavy on utopian stargazing and light on specific policies and courses of action.” That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a measure of critical consensus, but it points to the main limitation for viewers seeking an operational guide.
What political story does it tell?
The documentary gives its ideas a human and institutional frame. Trebeck’s work involves building an international alliance around wellbeing-economy principles; Fioramonti’s story takes the argument into Italian politics, where he moved from academia into public office. The official synopsis says Trebeck initiated the Wellbeing Economy Governments alliance in late 2017 and that Fioramonti helped start it before entering politics (official film site).

This focus on advocacy and political constraints is also the film’s strength as a documentary. It can show how a broad economic idea travels through relationships, campaigns and institutions without pretending that changing the measure of success is a simple technical fix. But the same character-led approach leaves less room for explaining in detail what a wellbeing-oriented policy package would contain.
How concrete are the policy examples?
One specific example highlighted by Fiedler is Fioramonti’s 2019 announcement, while serving as Italy’s education minister, of mandatory instruction on climate damage and sustainability for Italian students. The review presents this as one of the film’s most significant policy examples. It gives the broader argument a tangible connection to government, but a single education initiative cannot, on its own, explain how to redesign an economy around wellbeing.

For that reason, viewers wanting a detailed introduction to climate damage or degrowth economics may find the film insufficient as a standalone primer. Fiedler argues that those subjects receive less substantive explanation than the film’s ambitions might lead some viewers to expect.
Who should watch it?
- Watch it for the political journey: The film follows advocates trying to move an idea through alliances and government, with the setbacks and constraints that entails.
- Watch it for the central question: It invites viewers to ask whether GDP growth should remain the dominant test of economic success, and what a focus on wellbeing would mean.
- Pair it with other sources if you want policy depth: The reviewer’s main reservation is the limited detail on the policies and courses of action needed to realize the film’s vision.

The official watch page lists streaming through Films for Action, describing 14 days of access to the English original and a German adaptation. It also directs cinema organizers to contact the filmmakers about a Digital Cinema Package and screening terms. The page lists the film at 96 minutes; Fiedler’s review gives 95 minutes, so the runtime is best treated as approximately 95 minutes.
