To make a running FFmpeg process retry a failed YouTube Live output, wrap the FLV output in FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer and enable recovery. This can help after a temporary network-output failure, but it cannot restart FFmpeg if the process exits, and a retry is not guaranteed to succeed.
Configure FFmpeg to retry a failed YouTube output
FFmpeg’s documented FIFO approach queues output and attempts to recover when the output fails. For a live file loop, adapt the output portion of your existing command as shown below. Replace INPUT and the destination with the actual input and YouTube RTMP or RTMPS stream URL plus stream key from your encoder setup.
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-map 0:v -map 0:a
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
'rtmps://DESTINATION/STREAM_KEY'
This is a recovery-wrapper pattern, not a complete command for every source or channel. Keep the codec, mapping, input, and destination appropriate to your working setup. Do not publish the real stream key, expose it in a public script, or leave it in logs or shell history.
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation describes the recovery behavior as: “If failure occurs, attempt to recover the output.” The example uses a one-second wait between attempts. Confirm the options supported by your installed build with ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo, then test the exact command against a private or unlisted test stream. This command pattern has not been tested here.

Choose whether to drop queued packets or wait
The sample sets -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1. If the FIFO queue fills, FFmpeg can keep processing by dropping packets, so the stream may have a gap. This favors keeping the live process moving over preserving every queued packet.
If packets are not dropped, FFmpeg may instead block while waiting for the output muxer, depending on configuration. That can preserve queued data while the queue has room, but a full queue can stall processing. Choose based on whether avoiding a processing stall or avoiding packet loss matters more for your program; neither choice makes an internet outage invisible to viewers.

Options such as -recover_any_error, -max_recovery_attempts, and -restart_with_keyframe can change which failures qualify for recovery, the number of attempts, and keyframe handling. Their availability and behavior can vary by FFmpeg build. Check local muxer help and test before relying on them; do not assume an unverified default.
Distinguish output recovery from HTTP input reconnects
FFmpeg’s HTTP options -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, -reconnect_at_eof, and -reconnect_on_network_error concern HTTP input behavior. They are not the mechanism for recovering an RTMP or RTMPS push to YouTube. For a failed YouTube output, configure FIFO recovery around the output instead.

Recover when the stream has already stopped
- Verify connectivity. Confirm the streaming machine can reach the internet again. A local Wi-Fi connection alone does not prove that the outbound path is working.
- Check whether FFmpeg is still running. If it is alive, inspect its terminal output or logs and allow the configured recovery attempts to proceed. If the process exited or reports a terminal output error, FIFO recovery cannot bring it back.
- Restart an exited process. Start FFmpeg again with the existing input, YouTube stream URL, and current stream key. A process supervisor or an operator is needed to relaunch a process that has ended; FIFO recovery alone does not do this.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm the event’s preview and stream health after reconnection, including audio and video. YouTube recommends testing streams and monitoring health during an event.
- If YouTube rejects the restart, refresh encoder credentials. Check the configured stream URL and key. YouTube’s third-party encoder startup troubleshooting directs creators to copy the stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Preserve YouTube ingest settings when adapting the command
Recovery settings do not replace encoder settings for a compatible, watchable ingest. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; it also lists CBR as the bitrate-encoding setting. These are ingest and quality recommendations, not a promise that an interrupted network connection will recover.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. It also recommends sufficient outbound capacity with 20% headroom. Headroom helps accommodate streaming bandwidth needs, but it cannot restore a disconnected network path.

Reduce the impact of repeated outages
If interruptions recur or a missed segment is unacceptable, test resilience beyond retries inside one FFmpeg process. YouTube describes testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then verifying player rollover. A backup encoder is a separate setup from FIFO recovery and needs its own configuration and test.
An alternate internet path, such as a cellular connection, may help only if it is genuinely separate from the primary route and has adequate coverage and sustained upload capacity where you stream. Check data allowances too. This is a practical consideration, not a YouTube endorsement of a particular device or provider.

Troubleshoot common reconnect failures
- FFmpeg exits during the outage: FIFO recovery applies only while the process remains alive. Restart it manually or use a separately configured process supervisor.
- FFmpeg is running, but the output does not return: Check its logs and the installed FIFO muxer options. Network recovery is not guaranteed; verify connectivity and test the exact configuration in advance.
- The restarted encoder is rejected by YouTube: Confirm the event’s stream URL and copy the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder configuration.
- Viewers see a gap or the program stalls: Review the queue-overflow choice. Dropping packets can create missing media; blocking can stall processing if the queue fills.
- The stream reconnects but health is poor: Inspect YouTube’s stream health and audio/video preview, then check bitrate, keyframe interval, and outbound capacity against YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- The problem repeats despite retries: Test a backup encoder and, where feasible, a separately routed backup connection. A second encoder is not a setting that can be added to the same FIFO retry policy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube loop running without leaving a computer and internet connection at home, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to try first. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo plays the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
- Nothing has to stay running at home; the stream continues from the cloud when your computer is off.
- Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery attempts to resume if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.
The Monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service and start the free first day.
