Streamers can supplement platform payouts with viewer support, affiliate sales, sponsorships, merchandise, and services built around their skills. No option guarantees income: the best fit depends on your audience, platform eligibility, workload, and willingness to deliver something in return. Treat these as a portfolio of possibilities, not a promise of a particular amount.
How to choose a side hustle as a streamer
Before adding a revenue stream, consider five questions: can you access it, how much work does it create, does it suit your audience, how dependent is it on a platform or brand, and what must you keep delivering? A recurring membership, for example, asks you to maintain perks; a sponsored segment requires agreed content; a service requires client work. Compare those obligations with the time you can reliably spare.
- Audience fit: Recommend or sell something that genuinely makes sense for the people who watch you. A mismatch can undermine trust.
- Workload: Include preparation, fulfillment, moderation, communication, and recordkeeping—not just the time spent live.
- Control: Platform features depend on platform rules and availability. Independent services may give you more control over the offer, but you must find customers and handle delivery.
- Disclosure: Clearly disclose sponsorships and affiliate relationships when you promote a product or earn from a referral.
Platform-native ways to earn
YouTube: ads, shopping, memberships, and viewer support
YouTube lists advertising revenue, shopping, channel memberships, and Super Thanks among its monetization options. Eligibility, account status, location, and policy compliance can affect access, so check the current requirements and features shown in your own account through YouTube’s monetization guide.
Channel memberships offer recurring monthly support in exchange for perks. Choose benefits you can sustain—such as members-only updates or community access—and be clear about what members receive. Super Thanks lets viewers pay to support eligible content; it does not require you to create a recurring perk. Both are subject to YouTube’s applicable terms and policies, including its commerce policies.

Twitch: check your dashboard and current terms

Brand sponsorships
A brand may pay for a stream segment, video, mention, or other agreed deliverable. Approach brands that fit your content and community, and state exactly what you can provide. Put deliverables, timing, payment, usage rights, and disclosure expectations in writing. Sponsorship availability does not mean a brand will contact you or that a proposed deal will be worthwhile; assess the work and terms before accepting.
Affiliate recommendations
Affiliate links can earn a commission when viewers make qualifying purchases, but results depend on audience interest, program terms, and purchases. Recommend only products you can stand behind, explain why they suit your viewers, and make the commission relationship clear. Keep records and understand tax obligations

Tax rules depend on where you live. For U.S. readers, the Internal Revenue Service says gig-economy income must be reported even when it comes from part-time, temporary, or side work. The IRS also says a return is required for net self-employment earnings from gig work of $400 or more. Read the IRS Gig Economy Tax Center and its guidance on managing taxes for gig work; consult a qualified tax professional about your circumstances. These U.S. rules should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
