Prepare the stream by choosing a modest resolution and frame rate, setting the encoder to a YouTube-recommended bitrate, and testing a representative section with both motion and audio. For the opened YouTube encoder table, H.264 starting points are 4 Mbps for 480p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. Those settings address the outgoing stream—not disk space. Store only the files you need on the PC, or move source videos to attached storage if the internal drive is the constraint.
Separate the three limits before changing settings
A 24/7 stream has three different resource demands. Solving one does not solve the others:
- Storage: where the prerecorded source files sit. An external drive may free internal disk space.
- Encoding and uptime: the PC and encoder must remain available to play and send the stream.
- Upload capacity: the internet connection must sustain the outgoing bitrate. Moving files to an external drive does not lower that bitrate.
Plan each separately. YouTube recommends choosing stream quality that is reliable for the available connection and testing before going live; no India-wide upload-speed threshold is established by the cited guidance.
Choose a low-resolution stream setting
YouTube’s resolution-specific encoder table lists the following H.264 recommended bitrates. Treat them as starting points, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection will remain stable.

| Output setting | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
These values are from YouTube Help’s encoder recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The page’s tables can vary by format or localization, so check the current table and the settings shown by your encoder before starting.
Set the other encoder parameters
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval if available; YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported. H.264 is the basis for the bitrate examples above.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3, both listed by YouTube.
- Ingest protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Choose it if your encoder supports it.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. For a low-resolution setup, choose a rate your source, PC, and upload connection can sustain; the 480p and 720p examples above are for 30 fps.
YouTube detects the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate sent by the encoder, then transcodes the incoming live stream into viewer renditions. The encoder’s job is to deliver a stable ingest feed, not to create every version viewers may watch.

Prepare source files without filling the PC
Keep only the files needed for playout
Remove or move unrelated large files before you begin. If the recordings themselves are consuming the internal drive, an external drive is a practical place to store the source videos and may free internal space. It changes the storage location only: it does not reduce upload bitrate, internet use, encoding demand, or dependence on the PC and its power.
Choose the codec with care
Google’s HLS ingestion guide says, in that HLS context, that HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more data compression at the same video quality compared with H.264. That is a general codec comparison, not a promise that a particular recording will shrink by that amount, and it is not a general source-file storage estimate. Check that your playback and encoder workflow supports the chosen files and codec before relying on them.

Do not treat YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide as instructions for looping a consumer video playlist. HLS is an ingest protocol with specific playlist, segment, transport, and codec requirements; it is not a recipe for looping local source files.
Test the complete stream before leaving it on
- Check the upload connection. Run a speed test and choose settings that the connection can sustain reliably, rather than selecting the highest available quality.
- Run a representative test. Include the kinds of motion and audio that will appear in the actual stream. YouTube specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Check Live Control Room and encoder status. Confirm the stream is receiving the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, and read any configuration warnings.
- Monitor stream health after connecting. The YouTube LiveStreams API reports health states including
good,ok,bad, andnoData, along with configuration diagnostics. A successful initial connection does not prove the stream will stay healthy. - Verify the program itself. Confirm that the intended video is playing, the audio is audible, and transitions or loop behavior work as expected in your chosen playout software.
The cited YouTube pages establish encoder settings and stream-health fields, but do not give a verified consumer-PC recipe for looping a playlist continuously. Follow documentation for the specific playout software you use rather than treating an encoder recommendation as a loop setup guide.

Plan for a 24/7 local PC workflow
With local playout, continuity depends on the PC, power, network connection, and encoder remaining available. An external drive addresses only where files are stored. Before relying on the stream, decide how you will notice an interruption and restart or recover the encoder, and make sure you can monitor stream health while it runs. No cited source establishes India-specific broadband performance, PC power consumption, outage rates, or a universal hardware requirement for this workflow.

If keeping a PC running at home is the obstacle, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not need to remain on for playout. StreamNeo offers one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.

Copyright and channel eligibility still matter
Changing resolution, bitrate, or storage location does not grant rights to stream a recording. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content. A continuous stream is not a workaround for reused-content rules or copyright claims.
