How to Batch Compress Hindi MP4 Videos on a Windows PC for OBS

A practical HandBrake workflow for batching Hindi MP4 compression on Windows, checking language tracks, and keeping file transcoding separate from OBS settings.

Use HandBrake’s queue to batch-encode your Hindi MP4 files, starting with an H.264 MP4 preset such as Very Fast 1080p30. Before processing the full batch, confirm which Hindi audio or subtitle track you need and test an output in OBS. Compression settings for stored files are separate from OBS’s live-stream encoder settings.

Before you batch-encode

Keep the originals and inspect a sample

Make a working copy of the files or retain the originals until you have checked the compressed versions. Open a representative video and note its resolution, frame rate, audio tracks, and subtitle tracks. “Hindi” might mean spoken Hindi audio, Hindi subtitles, or text permanently burned into the picture; the filename alone may not tell you which.

Check more than one file if the collection comes from different sources. Track order can vary, so an audio track in one file may not occupy the same position in another. HandBrake’s documentation describes language-based track selection in its command-line options; verify the resulting track in the output rather than relying on a track number across a mixed library. See HandBrake’s command-line reference.

Choose a compatible target

For broad playback compatibility, start with H.264 in an MP4 container. HandBrake’s official presets include Very Fast 1080p30, an H.264/AAC MP4 preset, as well as other resolution and codec options. Choose a preset that does not exceed the resolution or frame rate you need; a preset is a starting point, not a guarantee that its assumptions match every source. HandBrake also offers H.265/HEVC MP4 presets, but use them only if the software and devices that will play the files support HEVC. See HandBrake’s official presets.

There is no guaranteed compression ratio from choosing a codec or preset. The output size and visual quality depend on the source and quality settings. Encode a short, representative sample and compare it with the original before committing the whole collection.

Batch compress the files with HandBrake

  1. Open one representative MP4. In HandBrake, use Open Source and select a video. Review its dimensions, frame rate, audio tracks, and subtitles. Confirm where the Hindi content is: audio, selectable subtitles, or burned-in text.
  2. Select an MP4 preset. Choose a suitable H.264 MP4 preset, such as Very Fast 1080p30, if its resolution and frame-rate ceiling fit your intended use. If you choose H.265/HEVC instead, first confirm that the target playback environment supports it. Do not upscale a source or increase its frame rate without a specific reason.
  3. Review audio and subtitles. In the audio and subtitle controls, select the Hindi track you need and decide whether subtitles should be included, passed through, or omitted. Check the preview or a test encode: burned-in text is part of the picture and cannot be switched off as a separate subtitle track. When files have different track layouts, inspect each file or group them by layout rather than assuming the same track position means Hindi in every file.
  4. Set an output location and filename pattern. Choose a destination with enough free space for the outputs, and use names that make it easy to distinguish compressed files from originals. Check the destination and names before queuing to avoid overwriting source material.
  5. Add the file to the queue, then load the next one. Use HandBrake’s queue controls to add each source with the intended settings. Apply the same settings only to files for which the resolution, frame rate, and track layout are appropriate. Review the queue and output paths before starting it.
  6. Run the queue and verify outputs. After encoding, open at least one output from each distinct source or track-layout group. Confirm playback, audio sync, and the intended Hindi audio or visible subtitles. Check that the output resolution and frame rate suit your OBS workflow before replacing or deleting any originals.

For repeatable command-line runs, HandBrake documents importing a queue file created in its graphical interface. That lets you prepare and inspect a queue in the GUI, then use the CLI to import it; consult the current CLI reference for syntax and options.

H.264 or H.265: which should you use?

Choice When it fits Trade-off to check
H.264 in MP4 When compatibility across playback software and devices is the priority. File size and quality still depend on the source and encode settings; test a representative clip.
H.265/HEVC in MP4 When every intended playback device and software supports HEVC. Do not assume all OBS-related playback environments support it equally; verify by testing the actual workflow.

Neither codec guarantees a particular size reduction. If files are for OBS playback, check the compressed result in the same scene and playback path you plan to use; a file that plays in one media player is not proof that every downstream setup handles it as intended.

Keep file compression separate from OBS encoder settings

HandBrake’s preset and quality controls govern transcoding existing files. OBS’s recording or streaming encoder settings govern OBS’s own output; they are not interchangeable recipes.

For NVENC recording, the OBS Project’s Advanced Recording Settings guide lists Constant QP 16–23, keyframe interval 2, preset P5, High Quality tuning, two-pass quarter-resolution mode, High profile, Look-ahead off, adaptive quantization on, and two B-frames. The guide says lower CQ values mean higher quality and larger files. These are OBS recording recommendations, not universal HandBrake batch-compression settings. Check the current OBS Advanced Recording Settings guide for the context and options.

NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guidance distinguishes file-to-file transcoding examples from real-time capture and live streaming. Do not treat an offline transcode example as a streaming configuration; use the relevant OBS settings for the OBS task. See NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guidance.

Optional: use NVIDIA hardware encoding

HandBrake’s documented NVENC support, as described in its current documentation inspected on 2026-10-03, specifies GeForce RTX Turing (2060+) or newer, NVIDIA driver 610.0 or later, and Windows 10 or later. HandBrake notes that older configurations may work but are not officially supported. Hardware encoding is optional; the batch workflow does not require a supported NVIDIA GPU.

NVENC does not eliminate CPU work. HandBrake notes that CPU resources may still be used for video decoding, filters, audio encoding, subtitle handling, synchronization, and muxing, so high CPU use during a hardware encode is possible. Requirements can change; check HandBrake’s NVENC documentation before relying on a particular GPU or driver.

Troubleshoot common batch problems

  • The output has the wrong language or no Hindi subtitles. Reopen the source’s track list and identify the intended audio or subtitle track. Track ordering can differ between files. Re-encode a sample with the correct selection and verify it before continuing.
  • Subtitles appear in the picture and cannot be turned off. The text may be burned into the video rather than stored as a selectable subtitle track. Confirm against the original; a separate subtitle selection cannot remove text already encoded into the image.
  • The output looks softer, or the file is not much smaller. No preset promises a fixed size reduction. Compare the source and output at the intended viewing size, then adjust the quality choice or preset and test again. Avoid assuming a codec switch alone will guarantee smaller files.
  • The output does not play in the intended OBS setup. Confirm the codec/container combination is supported by the playback path you are using. If compatibility is uncertain, test H.264 MP4 rather than presuming HEVC support.
  • CPU usage remains high with NVENC selected. This can happen because decoding, filters, audio, subtitles, synchronization, and muxing may still use the CPU. Check the GPU and driver against HandBrake’s documented requirements if you need supported hardware acceleration.
  • A queued batch produces inconsistent results. Check whether source files have different dimensions, frame rates, or audio/subtitle layouts. Split unlike files into groups and inspect representative outputs from each group.

Or let it run in the cloud

Batch compression prepares files; it does not keep a YouTube live stream running. If your separate goal is to loop uploaded videos on a YouTube channel 24/7 without leaving a Windows PC on, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required.
