To remove unwanted audio from an MKV, inspect the file’s track IDs, select only the audio track or tracks you want to keep, and remux the file. In MKVToolNix, that means unchecking the unwanted tracks in the GUI or using mkvmerge with its audio-track selection option. This changes which streams are in the MKV; it does not convert the file to YouTube’s recommended upload format or re-encode its audio or video.
First decide whether you are preparing a normal video upload or configuring a live encoder: YouTube’s upload recommendations and live-stream requirements describe different workflows.
Remove an audio track without changing the video
Make a working copy of the MKV, identify the audio tracks, and remux a new file containing only the tracks you intend to keep. Don’t choose a track based on its displayed order in a media player: mkvmerge uses the input track IDs it reports, and those IDs may differ from a player’s numbering.
1. Identify the tracks
Open the MKV in MKVToolNix GUI, or inspect it from a terminal with:

mkvmerge --identify input.mkv
For machine-readable identification, use mkvmerge -J input.mkv. Note the IDs and descriptions of the audio tracks, then determine which contains the language, commentary, or mix you want. The mkvmerge manual documents identification and selection options; check the manual for the version installed on your computer, since the online documentation may change.
Decide deliberately what to keep beyond audio. Subtitles, chapters, attachments, and other streams may be useful; don’t remove them by accident.

2. Remux with only the wanted audio
In MKVToolNix GUI, add the input file, uncheck the audio tracks you do not want, set a new output filename, and start multiplexing. Leave other tracks selected if you need them.
From the command line, specify the IDs of the audio tracks to keep:

mkvmerge -o output.mkv --audio-tracks 2 input.mkv
Here, 2 is only an example: replace it with the ID reported for your input file. The selection option applies to the input that follows it, so put it before that input filename. mkvmerge copies all audio tracks by default; --audio-tracks limits which audio tracks are copied. Consult the installed version’s manual for exact syntax and options.
This is a remux, not a transcode: it selects streams for the output container rather than re-encoding the audio or video. If you need different codecs or settings, use a separate transcoding workflow.

3. Verify the result
Identify or reopen the output and confirm that the wanted audio and necessary non-audio streams remain. Listen near the beginning and later in the video to confirm you kept the intended language or mix and that it stays in sync. Keep the original file until you are satisfied with the result.

Removing tracks can simplify an MKV or keep an unwanted audio program out of your workflow. It does not, on its own, guarantee that the output uses YouTube’s recommended upload container or a compatible live-stream configuration. YouTube does not require every MKV to have tracks removed.

For a normal YouTube upload
YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings specify MP4 and recommend AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio for audio. They list 48 kHz as the recommended sample rate and, for audio bitrate, 128 kbps for mono, 384 kbps for stereo, and 512 kbps for 5.1. Those are upload recommendations, not settings for choosing MKV track IDs or universal requirements for live streaming.
If the remuxed MKV is not in the container or codec configuration you want for upload, convert or export it separately using settings appropriate to YouTube’s recommendations. Removing an audio track does not turn an MKV into an MP4, nor does it change a track’s codec.
For a live YouTube broadcast
Live ingestion is a separate pipeline. YouTube’s live encoder settings specify AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; 5.1 surround over those protocols is supported only with AAC. Configure the live encoder for the stream rather than applying upload recommendations as though they were live requirements.
If you are recording locally in OBS before preparing a video, its recording guide describes MKV as the default container and notes its resilience if recording is interrupted, while also noting it may need remuxing for editing software. OBS also describes fragmented MP4/MOV as options that can suit uploads to platforms such as YouTube. These are separate recording and delivery choices: keeping an MKV archive does not prevent making a different delivery file.

Common problems and fixes
- The wrong audio remains: Recheck the IDs from
mkvmerge --identifyormkvmerge -J; do not rely on a media player’s track numbering. Remux again with the correct input ID. - The output has no audio: Confirm that the selected ID belongs to an audio track and that the selection option appears before the input filename it should affect.
- Subtitles or other streams disappeared: Review the GUI track checkboxes or your command options, then remux from the original working copy while preserving the required non-audio streams.
- YouTube still does not accept or process the file as intended: Track removal only selects streams. Check the final container and codecs against the upload recommendations, and convert separately if needed.
- The live stream’s audio is incompatible: Check the live encoder’s audio configuration against YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance; do not assume the upload audio recommendations describe live ingestion.
