Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart with ffprobe or VLC to inspect a video; if it plays and the problem appears limited to its container, try remuxing a copy. These free tools can help diagnose or work around some file problems, but remuxing does not restore missing or corrupted video data. Keep the original untouched, and treat any recovery as uncertain.
Choose a tool based on what you need to find out
| Tool | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg and ffprobe | Inspecting media properties and processing, remuxing, or converting files from the command line. | Flexible and repeatable, but you need to choose commands and options carefully. ffprobe is the probing utility in the FFmpeg toolset. |
| VLC | Checking whether a file plays and viewing codec information in a graphical interface. | In VLC for Windows, its documented path is Tools → Codec Information. Labels and procedures can vary by version. |
| MediaInfo | Reading a more detailed report of a file’s technical specifications. | It is an information and reporting tool, not a general-purpose repair guarantee. VideoLAN points users to MediaInfo when they need more detailed specifications. |
These roles are described in the FFmpeg, VLC, and VideoLAN materials. Which tool is useful depends on whether the file is readable, what properties you need to inspect, and whether the suspected fault is in the container or the encoded streams.
Inspect the file before trying to repair it
Use ffprobe for a command-line inspection
With FFmpeg installed, run this against a copy or the original in read-only fashion, replacing the example path with your file:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i "input.mp4"
Review the output for the container and the detected video and audio streams, including codec and basic stream information. If ffprobe reports errors, note the exact message; it may help narrow the problem, but it does not by itself establish whether the file can be recovered. The precise output varies with the media and FFmpeg version.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use VLC or MediaInfo if you prefer a graphical report
- Open the file in VLC and check whether it plays or fails, noting where playback stops or what error appears.
- In VLC for Windows, open Tools → Codec Information to identify the codecs. The documented path is Windows-specific; menus may differ in other versions or operating systems.
- If you need a more detailed technical specification, inspect the file with MediaInfo.
Record the file’s format, detected streams, codecs, and any error messages before changing anything. This helps distinguish a file that is unreadable from one that plays but has a suspected packaging issue.
When remuxing may help—and what it cannot do
Remuxing demuxes and re-muxes existing media streams into a container. It changes the packaging; it does not re-create missing frames, audio, or other corrupted stream data. It is a reasonable attempt only when the streams can be read and the fault appears confined to the container. It is not a guaranteed repair.

Try a remux with FFmpeg on a separate copy
For a readable MP4 whose streams you want to copy into a new MP4 container, a basic attempt is:
ffmpeg -i "input.mp4" -map 0 -c copy "remuxed.mp4"
This asks FFmpeg to copy the detected streams rather than re-encode them. It does not make damaged stream data healthy, and it can fail if the input cannot be read or the streams cannot be written into the chosen output container. Keep the output under a new name; do not overwrite the source.

Check the result before using it in OBS
- Open the remuxed output in a player such as VLC and check whether it plays through the parts that matter.
- Inspect the output again with ffprobe or MediaInfo to see what streams were written.
- Test the output in OBS before relying on it for a recording or stream.
If the remux fails, playback still breaks at the same point, or the stream itself appears truncated or corrupted, the steps above do not establish a way to restore the absent or damaged data. Preserve the original and avoid treating repeated remuxing as a recovery guarantee.
Keep file damage separate from OBS streaming trouble
A damaged recording and a live stream with dropped frames or connection trouble are different problems. If the file plays normally but OBS reports dropped frames or connection issues during streaming, use the OBS Project Help Portal’s dedicated dropped-frames and connection troubleshooting guidance, along with its x264 guide where relevant. Those streaming-path problems do not necessarily indicate that the video file is corrupt.

What “free” means for OBS
The OBS Project Help Portal describes OBS as open-source software distributed under GPLv2. It says OBS is free for any use, has no watermarks or other limitations, and can be used commercially without restrictions. Download OBS from the official OBS website rather than an unofficial download source.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the video is readable and your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from repairing the file or running OBS locally. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can VLC or MediaInfo repair a damaged video?
The cited material supports using VLC and MediaInfo to inspect files, not a claim that either can restore damaged encoded video data.
What information should I include when asking for help with a file?
Share the operating system, file format, exact error message, whether playback works and where it fails, and the relevant ffprobe output. Those details can make a case-specific repair path possible.
