If YouTube audio gradually drifts out of sync during a long playlist, first check whether the problem follows one video or one playback setup. Reload or restart playback, then test the same point in another browser or device. If the same upload is out of sync at the same timestamp everywhere, the source file may be wrong; if it happens across videos on just one setup, troubleshoot that browser, app, device, or connection.
This guide is for audio and picture becoming mismatched during viewing. A live stream arriving late is a different issue: latency is the delay between the event and what reaches the player.
First identify what kind of sync problem you have
Before changing settings, note when the mismatch begins and where it occurs. Audio that is consistently early or late from the beginning is a different pattern from audio that starts in sync and gradually separates from the picture. A pause, resume, or reload may temporarily restore sync; that is useful diagnostic information, not a guaranteed fix.
- One video or every video? Test a different video in the same playlist and, if possible, another YouTube video.
- One browser or device, or several? Replay the same video at the same point somewhere else.
- Does the mismatch grow over time? Note whether it is present at the start or accumulates during playback.
- Is playback also stuttering or buffering? If so, include the connection and playback quality in your tests.
- Is this a live broadcast? Being behind the event is latency; sound and picture disagreeing within the player is a sync problem.
YouTube’s public help guidance covers general playback problems, source-file issues, and live latency, but does not identify progressive sync drift during extended playlist viewing as a universal issue or give a guaranteed one-step fix.

Work through playback fixes in order
1. Reload playback, then restart the app or browser
- Pause and resume once. If that does not help, reload the video or leave and reopen it.
- Close and reopen the YouTube app or browser. If the problem persists, restart the device.
- Replay the same video and check whether sync stays correct for longer.
These are diagnostic steps: a temporary improvement can point to the local playback session, but does not establish the underlying cause.
2. Update and compare your playback setup
- Install available updates for your browser, YouTube app, and device software.
- On desktop, close unused tabs and temporarily disable browser extensions. YouTube’s general video-error guidance suggests testing in an incognito window with extensions disabled, including ad blockers.
- Play the same video at the same timestamp in another supported browser or on another device.
If only one browser or device has the problem, focus subsequent tests there. That pattern alone does not prove which component is responsible.

3. Check the connection and playback quality if video stutters
If you also see buffering or uneven playback, try another connection if available and lower the playback quality as a diagnostic. YouTube’s approximate recommended sustained speeds for playback are listed below; they are recommendations for resolution, not a guarantee against audio/video drift.
| Playback resolution | Approximate recommended sustained speed |
|---|---|
| 4K | 20 Mbps |
| 1080p | 5 Mbps |
| 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| 360p | 0.7 Mbps |
These figures are from YouTube Help’s playback troubleshooting guidance; the page does not state a publication year. Stats for Nerds can also show playback information while you investigate.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
4. Treat hardware acceleration as a limited, reversible test
Do not assume hardware acceleration is the cause of progressive drift. YouTube’s instructions to turn it off in Chrome address a different symptom: a green picture with audible sound. If you have a related visual-rendering problem or the issue appears confined to one browser, you can try disabling hardware acceleration and updating graphics drivers, then replay the same point. Restore the setting if playback gets worse. The guidance is a diagnostic lead for that rendering symptom, not a promised fix for long-playback sync drift.
When the upload itself is out of sync
Play the same upload at the same timestamp on another device or browser. If the mismatch recurs at that point across playback setups, a local viewer-side change is unlikely to correct the upload. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance says to make sure the audio and video track durations match and recommends correcting the tracks in editing software before uploading.

In that case, note the video URL and timestamp and report them to the uploader, or look for another upload. A local pause, quality change, or browser setting cannot repair a mismatch already present in the published source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you mean a live stream
For a live broadcast, distinguish two things: a stream that is behind the real-world event, and audio that does not line up with the picture in the player. The first is latency. YouTube explains that lower latency leaves the player with less read-ahead buffer, which can increase buffering; network congestion can also delay a stream even when average bitrate can be sustained. Viewers generally cannot change the creator’s encoder latency setting.

If you are the creator, test with representative audio and motion, check stream health, and monitor audio and video quality. YouTube’s live guidance recommends upload-bandwidth headroom of 20%; that is a creator-side recommendation, not a viewer download target. Hardware acceleration guidance for green-screen rendering is a separate issue, not a general live-sync remedy.
