To restart a 24/7 kids’ YouTube stream after a power cut, automate four separate links in the chain: backup power for the streaming computer and network equipment, computer startup, encoder startup, and YouTube’s stream settings. A UPS or inverter can keep local equipment running only for its available runtime; it cannot keep an internet provider’s service online. If the computer shuts down and reboots, test the entire recovery sequence—especially whether the router and internet are ready before the encoder tries to connect.

What needs to recover after a power cut

A continuous stream depends on more than the streaming PC. Its recovery path typically includes the encoder or streaming computer, modem, router, any required network switch, the encoder software, and the YouTube stream configuration. A failure at any point can prevent the stream from returning.

  • Local power: A UPS or inverter may keep the PC or encoder and network equipment running, depending on the load and available backup.
  • Internet access: Your ISP connection can fail independently of your home power. A UPS does not protect the provider’s network or guarantee service.
  • Computer and encoder startup: After a full shutdown, the computer must boot and the encoder must launch and connect.
  • YouTube stream settings: The stream’s Auto-start setting can permit an encoder to start the scheduled stream; it does not boot your computer or restore your internet connection.

For a kids’ channel, recovery is only one part of continuity. Confirm that the playlist, video rights, and channel settings are suitable before leaving a stream unattended. YouTube’s encoder guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Set up YouTube Live for encoder recovery

  1. Create or reuse the scheduled stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep its stream URL and stream key available to the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, public scripts, or logs.
  2. Enable Auto-start in the stream settings. YouTube says that when these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder. Auto-start concerns the encoder-to-YouTube step; it does not restart a PC or fix a failed network connection. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Choose Auto-stop deliberately. If your goal is continuous operation, check whether the stream is set to stop automatically and whether that behavior fits your schedule. An unintended stop can interrupt the stream even if the encoder remains available.
  4. Configure the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports streaming software and standalone hardware encoders; use the instructions for the encoder you actually run.

First-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube. That applies when enabling live streaming for the first time, not as a normal recovery delay after an outage. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is an archive detail, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming or a complete archive for streams lasting longer.

Protect the local equipment with backup power

Include the whole path

List the devices that must remain powered: the streaming PC or encoder, modem, router, and any required switch or other power supply. If the network equipment loses power while the PC stays on, the encoder may still lose its connection. Backing up only the computer is not a complete local-power plan.

Size backup for your actual load

Measure or obtain the equipment’s power draw, then choose a UPS or inverter based on the combined load and how long you want to bridge an outage. Runtime depends on the equipment and the backup system; there is no reliable fixed number of minutes to promise without a load calculation and a test. A home inverter and battery system may be a broader option when more backup time is needed, but the right choice depends on your setup.

Automate computer and encoder startup

OBS on Windows: launch and attempt to start streaming

For an OBS-on-Windows setup, arrange for OBS to launch when Windows starts, then configure an appropriate automatic start-streaming action. An OBS Project forum response suggests adding --startstreaming to a Windows shortcut and launching it through the Startup folder or Task Scheduler. This is community advice, not a guarantee for every current OBS or Windows version; verify that the option works with your installed setup. The discussion is at OBS Project Forums: “Autostart after e.g. Reboot”.

Allow for the network to boot later

A PC can finish starting before the modem or router has reconnected to the ISP. The OBS forum response warns that the first connection attempt may fail in this situation and that automatic reconnect does not necessarily resolve an initial failed connection after reboot. A delayed or connectivity-aware scheduled retry may be more robust, but the timing and method must be tested with your Windows, OBS, router, and YouTube configuration.

Test the full recovery chain

  1. Start with a controlled test. Use a planned test stream or a controlled maintenance window so you can inspect recovery without surprising viewers.
  2. Test local power loss. Remove local power as appropriate for your setup, then restore it. Confirm that the computer, modem, router, and required network devices start.
  3. Check encoder startup and connection. Verify that OBS or your encoder launches and attempts to stream. If it tries before internet service returns, check whether your retry or delay procedure recovers without manual intervention.
  4. Verify YouTube’s side. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then confirm the public watch page is live.
  5. Test an internet interruption separately. A PC reboot and a network interruption are different failure cases. Confirm what your encoder does if internet service drops while local power remains available.
  6. Record the result. Note which device or step delayed recovery, adjust the setup, and repeat the test. Do not assume that one successful boot proves the chain will work in every outage.

Plan separately for an ISP or network failure

Local backup power cannot preserve an ISP connection when the provider’s service or upstream network is down. If the stream must survive an access-network failure, investigate a separately routed backup internet connection and verify that your encoder can use it. No specific India provider or service plan is established here, so check local availability and test failover rather than assuming a second connection will switch automatically.
