To send an existing Icecast MP3 station to YouTube Live through OBS Studio, add the station’s public listener URL as a network media source, confirm its audio reaches OBS’s outgoing mix, and configure OBS with the YouTube event’s ingest server URL and private stream key. Start with OBS’s built-in Media Source; if it cannot open the feed, try VLC Video. Because Icecast does not officially support MP3 and station endpoints vary, test the complete route before announcing a public stream.
What you need before opening OBS
- The public Icecast listener URL and mountpoint. Ask the station operator for the URL listeners use, including the path or mountpoint. Icecast defines a mountpoint as the path associated with a stream resource; the exact address, port, and any authentication depend on the station’s setup. Source-client credentials are not a substitute for the listener URL, and you should not expose passwords.
- A live YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream so you can copy its ingest server URL and stream key. The ingest server URL is not the same as the viewer-facing YouTube watch URL.
- OBS Studio and, if needed, VLC. Try OBS’s Media Source first. VLC Video is a fallback if the built-in source cannot open or decode the feed. VLC must be installed for that source to appear; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
If possible, verify the listener URL in a media player before configuring OBS. Icecast says MP3 might work, but it does not officially support it; compatibility can depend on the station’s server and the client handling the feed. Its FAQ describes Ogg (Vorbis, Theora), Opus, FLAC, and WebM as supported formats, while saying MP3 and several other formats might work without official support: Icecast FAQ.
Add the Icecast feed as an OBS source
Try Media Source first
- In OBS, find the Sources dock, select +, and add Media Source.
- In the source properties, turn off Local File. Enter the complete public listener URL, including the station’s mountpoint, in the input field. Do not enter the source-client login in place of this URL.
- Apply the settings and start or refresh playback if needed. Watch the source’s audio meter in OBS. A moving meter indicates audio is reaching the mixer; it does not by itself confirm that YouTube receives it.
OBS documents a network-input workflow for Media Source using SRT, and lists MP3 among supported media formats; it does not provide an Icecast-specific recipe. Using Media Source with an Icecast URL is therefore a practical first attempt, not a guarantee that every station endpoint or MP3 stream will open. See OBS Media Sources and OBS Quick Start Guide.
If Media Source cannot open the feed
- In the Sources dock, select + and add VLC Video.
- Add the listener URL to the source’s playlist or input list, then apply the settings and check whether the feed plays and its audio meter moves.
- If VLC Video is missing, install VLC with the same architecture as OBS. OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
OBS documents a 400 ms network-caching default for VLC Video. That value applies to the documented VLC source property; it is not a universal recommended cache setting for Icecast. Avoid changing caching values without a buffering problem to address. Details: OBS Media Sources.

Connect OBS to the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live event and locate its encoder or stream settings.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event.
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose the appropriate YouTube service configuration and enter the server URL and stream key supplied for the event. If the service offers RTMPS, use it when available.
- Apply the settings. Start streaming from OBS when you are ready to run an end-to-end test or broadcast.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for live ingest. Use the server URL and key YouTube gives you for the event rather than a public watch link. See YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
Set audio and encoder options for a test
For an audio-led broadcast, keep the visual scene simple if a minimal visual suits your programme; there is no reason to spend video bitrate on a complex scene the audience does not need. OBS still needs to send a valid video scene for the YouTube broadcast. Choose video settings your computer and upload connection can sustain, and use YouTube-compatible encoder settings.

- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Ingest protocol: Prefer RTMPS when it is available for your event.
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not guarantees that a particular Icecast feed or OBS configuration will work. Check the current guidance for any changes: YouTube Help: live encoder settings.
Run an end-to-end test before going public
- Use a private or unlisted test event where available, or otherwise verify the received audio before a public broadcast.
- Start the Icecast source in OBS and confirm that its audio meter moves and that it is not muted.
- Check that the source’s audio is routed to the track OBS sends to the stream. A meter can move while audio is muted or excluded from the outgoing track.
- Start the OBS stream and check the event on YouTube’s side for audible audio, stream health, and ingest messages.
- Let the representative feed play long enough to notice buffering or interruptions. Resolve any warning before promoting the public event.
YouTube advises testing beforehand with representative audio and video, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. See YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Troubleshoot a silent or unstable feed
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS’s audio meter does not move | The URL may be a viewer page or source-client address rather than a public listener URL; the mountpoint may be wrong; the station may be offline; or the decoder may not accept its MP3 stream. | Confirm the listener URL and mountpoint with the station operator, verify the endpoint in a player if possible, and try VLC Video if Media Source fails. |
| VLC Video is absent from the source menu | VLC may not be installed or may not match OBS’s architecture. | Install VLC compatible with the OBS build; OBS requires 64-bit VLC when OBS is 64-bit. |
| The OBS meter moves, but the YouTube test is silent | The source may be muted or assigned to an audio track that is not sent to the stream. | Check mute state, audio track assignment, and routing, then repeat the test and verify the received audio at YouTube. |
| The feed buffers or cuts out | The station endpoint or network may be unstable, or the selected source may be having difficulty with the stream. | Check that the station is online and that the listener URL works outside OBS. If using VLC Video, investigate caching cautiously; OBS’s documented 400 ms default is specific to that source and is not an Icecast-wide setting. |
| YouTube reports an ingest problem | The event’s server URL or stream key may be incorrect, or the encoder settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. | Copy the current event credentials again, keep the key private, use RTMPS when available, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages and encoder recommendations. |
Copyright and the content you send live
Routing a station feed through OBS does not grant permission to rebroadcast its music, programmes, recordings, or other material. Confirm that you have the rights or permissions needed for the material and territory involved before sending it to YouTube, and review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and copyright rules. A technically successful test is not evidence that a broadcast is authorized. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical rights review aid; it does not replace permission from rights holders or platform rules.

StreamNeo is a different workflow for looping uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not take a live Icecast feed or stream from a camera. To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
