If your YouTube radio livestream keeps “disconnecting from the audio source,” first find out whether the audio input is vanishing inside your encoder, the audio is going silent while the video remains live, or the entire broadcast is disconnecting. Watch the encoder’s audio meter and make a local recording while the problem occurs: if both lose audio, check the selected source and its routing; if local audio remains healthy but the published stream drops, investigate the encoder’s connection to YouTube.
Identify what is actually disconnecting
“Audio source” can mean the input or output device captured by your encoder, the audio reaching YouTube, or the whole live broadcast. Those are different failures and call for different fixes. YouTube recommends checking what the encoder outputs, its errors and CPU load, and a local archive; if the encoder output is healthy, look at the outbound internet connection. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide provides that diagnostic distinction.
- The encoder meter stops, and a local recording has no audio: start with the selected device, scene or global audio settings, and the device’s connection.
- The meter and local recording remain healthy, but YouTube audio cuts out or the broadcast disconnects: inspect encoder logs, dropped frames, bitrate, and the network path.
- Video stays live but audio alone goes silent: check whether the encoder still shows an active audio source and whether the local recording contains sound. This narrows the issue to capture/routing versus delivery.
While reproducing the issue, note the time, whether the meter moves, whether the local file has sound, whether the video stays live, and any encoder or YouTube Live Control Room errors. That evidence is more useful than changing several settings at once.
If the audio source disappears inside the encoder
Check the device selected in OBS
In OBS, confirm that the intended input or output device is selected for the active scene or in the global audio settings. Watch the source’s meter as audio plays. OBS describes an audio source as a device captured by a scene or configured globally; its audio sources guide explains the available source types.

If you use a scene-level Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture, check whether the same device is also enabled in Settings → Audio. OBS warns that capturing the same device in both places can cause echo. Disable the duplicate global device if the scene already captures it.
Check platform support and the operating system
OBS documents Audio Input/Output Capture for Windows and macOS. For Linux, it directs users to ALSA or PulseAudio sources. If the device also disappears from the operating system’s sound settings, record its name, operating system, connection type, and when it vanishes. The encoder documentation alone cannot establish that the hardware has failed, so isolate the fault before replacing a microphone, interface, or other device.

If local audio works but the stream disconnects
When the local recording and encoder meter stay healthy, treat the problem as a transport issue unless other evidence points elsewhere. OBS describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as instability between the computer and the remote ingest server. Its connection troubleshooting guide recommends checking bitrate, Wi‑Fi, VPN or security software, network optimization tools, drivers, and hardware along the network path.
Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity
Check the encoder’s bitrate and compare it with your connection’s stable upload capacity—not just a brief speed-test peak. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate, subject to stable upload and the streaming service’s limits. This is a troubleshooting heuristic, not a guaranteed YouTube setting. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, test a lower value and see whether dropped frames or disconnections change.

Test the connection path
- If you are on Wi‑Fi, compare with wired Ethernet. A cable can help with network instability; it will not restore an audio device missing from the encoder.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus, or network-prioritization software coincides with the problem. If testing requires temporarily disabling security software, restore it promptly. If the test identifies it as the cause, use an appropriate OBS exception rather than leaving protection off.
- Check for outdated network drivers; OBS recommends getting current drivers from the computer or motherboard manufacturer.
- Restarting the modem or router can help identify a general connectivity issue. Replace a cable, router, modem, network card, switch, or extender only after evidence points to that component. If you are unsure, OBS advises contacting your ISP before replacing equipment.
Try encoder options only as diagnostics
If available, test another ingest server. Comparing the connection on another service can also help distinguish a service-specific issue from a problem in the local network path; it is a diagnostic, not a permanent fix. OBS documents Windows-only network optimization/TCP pacing and dynamic bitrate options. Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality and does not fix the underlying cause.
Use a stream key only when the error points to it
A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. YouTube Help describes keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its live stream settings guidance. YouTube recommends obtaining a new key and updating the encoder for a relevant third-party encoder startup error. Rotating the key is not a general remedy for an audio source that disappears or an unstable network connection.

Escalate with logs and a reproducible symptom
If the encoder and local recording show healthy audio but transport remains unstable after network checks, contact your ISP with the time of the issue, encoder logs, dropped-frame data, bitrate, connection type, and whether the problem reproduces on another network. YouTube also advises reporting persistent live-stream problems through its troubleshooting guidance. If local audio fails, share the device name, operating system, connection type, and whether it disappears from system sound settings; that helps distinguish capture routing from a device-level fault.
