OBS documents VLC Video Source for playlists; it requires VLC to be installed, with matching 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. Then check the playlist settings, source visibility, and whether each skipped file opens on its own.
Start by identifying how the playlist is built
VLC Video Source: use this for a playlist
In OBS, inspect the Sources list and the properties of the source that contains your cartoons. OBS documents its VLC Video Source as the playlist-capable option. VLC must be installed for the source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS’s guide specifies 64-bit VLC. See the OBS VLC Video Source guide.
Media Source: use this for an individual file
OBS’s built-in Media Source is documented for individual media files, not as the playlist source. If you assembled the sequence from several Media Sources, inspect each source and its playback properties separately. The guide lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM as supported video extensions. An extension alone does not confirm that a file’s internal codec or encoding will work in your setup.
Check the VLC playlist settings
Open the VLC Video Source properties and review the controls that affect what happens after a clip ends and when the source is hidden:

- Loop Playlist: turn it on if you expect the playlist to repeat after its final entry.
- Shuffle Playlist: check whether it is enabled. With shuffle on, the next item may not be the next one in the listed order.
- Visibility Behaviour: choose whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible. A source can become hidden when you switch scenes or disable its visibility.
The available controls and their behavior are described in the OBS guide. These settings can explain unexpected order, a pause while hidden, or a playlist that does not repeat as expected; they do not by themselves identify a file-decoding problem.
Make sure the source is visible and on top
In the Sources list, confirm the VLC source or affected Media Source is enabled. Also inspect the other sources in the scene: sources higher in the list appear above lower sources and can cover them. A clip may still be playing while its picture is hidden by an overlay or another source. OBS explains source ordering in its Sources guide.

Test a skipped cartoon by itself
- Check its path. Confirm the playlist entry points to a file that still exists and that OBS can access it. A moved or renamed file can leave the playlist pointing to an invalid location.
- Open it as a standalone source. Test the suspect file separately, rather than diagnosing it only through the full playlist. If it fails alone, compare its extension and encoding with a known-good clip.
- Compare one working and one skipped file. Note their file paths, containers, and available encoding details. A familiar extension does not guarantee that every codec combination is compatible with the particular OBS and VLC setup.
- Return to the playlist. If the file works alone but is skipped in the playlist, recheck the VLC source’s playlist entries and loop, shuffle, and visibility settings.
Separate a transition failure from missing picture
If playback stops after one cartoon
Confirm that the source is actually a VLC Video Source, that the full playlist is present, and that loop and shuffle are set as intended. A 2018 OBS forum report described a VLC playlist playing one video and stopping on its final frame, but it involved OBS 21.0.1 and VLC 3.0.0. It is a historical user report, not evidence that current OBS has a general playlist bug or that the same cause applies to your setup. See the forum report.
If sound continues but the picture is absent
Check whether the source is enabled, covered by another source, or transformed out of the visible canvas. One OBS forum user reported resolving this particular symptom by right-clicking the source and choosing Transform → Reset Transformation. Treat it as a symptom-specific report, not a universal fix. What to record if the problem persists
The exact cause cannot be determined from the symptom alone. Before changing more settings, capture the details needed to reproduce it:
- OBS and VLC versions, operating system, and whether OBS and VLC are both 64-bit;
- whether the playlist is a VLC Video Source or several Media Sources, plus the relevant source properties;
- the affected file paths and available container or encoding details;
- whether the clip is skipped at a transition, the playlist stops on its last frame, or audio plays while the picture is missing;
- whether one known-good file and one affected file behave differently when tested individually.
This distinguishes a playlist-setting or visibility issue from a problem tied to a particular file, without assuming a general OBS defect.
