Why FFmpeg Shows “Broken Pipe” When Streaming Radio to YouTube

FFmpeg’s “Broken pipe” is a failed output write, not a diagnosis. Follow the log, isolate the radio input from YouTube ingest, and check stream health, credentials, settings, and upload capacity.

“Broken pipe” means FFmpeg tried to write to its output, but the receiving side was no longer accepting data. It identifies a failed write—not the underlying cause. A dropped connection, a remote ingest closure, rejected stream settings, or an earlier input or process failure can all lead to the same message. The full log and YouTube’s stream-health status are needed to narrow it down.

What “Broken pipe” tells you—and what it doesn’t

FFmpeg’s error table labels the EPIPE error “Broken pipe.” In a YouTube relay, the message may appear as av_interleaved_write_frame(): Broken pipe or while writing the trailer. Those lines tell you where FFmpeg encountered a failed output write; they do not establish that your internet connection failed, that YouTube had an outage, or that any one setting caused the problem. FFmpeg’s error table and an FFmpeg-user discussion illustrate the error wording, but the mailing-list example does not prove the cause of that relay’s failure.

Timing is useful evidence, not a diagnosis. A failure at startup, at a playlist or input boundary, after an idle period, or after hours of streaming points you toward different parts of the pipeline. Record when it happens and check what the log and YouTube report at that time.

Trace the failure from input to YouTube

  1. Capture the complete FFmpeg output. Start before the first warning or error, not at the final broken-pipe line. Add -report if you need FFmpeg to create a fuller diagnostic report. Before sharing a command or log, redact the stream key: it is the credential that lets YouTube accept your feed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  2. Find the first error. Note the stream mapping, whether input progress continues, and whether the failure happens at startup, around an input transition, or after a period of normal operation. A later trailer-writing error can be a consequence of the output having already failed.
  3. Check the radio source. Confirm that the source remains reachable and that FFmpeg continues receiving or producing audio packets. If the source is remote, check its availability and any interruption at the time of failure.
  4. Separate input problems from output problems. When practical, record a representative input to a local file. Then test a known-good file against the YouTube destination. If the first test fails, investigate the source or FFmpeg processing; if the second fails, focus on the destination, credentials, settings, and network. This isolation approach is community troubleshooting advice, not a guaranteed fix; see the FFmpeg-user discussion.
  5. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Verify the server URL and stream key shown for the stream, the preview or ingest state, and any stream-health messages. Compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
  6. Check upload capacity under real conditions. Measure the connection’s upload capacity while other household or office devices are in use. YouTube recommends bandwidth headroom of 20% above the total stream bitrate and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. A download-speed result alone does not establish that upload capacity is adequate. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
  7. For a continuous process, keep a failure timeline. Record timestamps, process uptime, input transitions, and network events. A restart policy can restore service after FFmpeg exits, but it does not explain or correct the original failure.

Verify the YouTube ingest settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced recommendations include 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube recommendations—not proof that a stream using a different setting must produce EPIPE.

For H.264, YouTube lists these recommended video bitrates. They are guidance values, not measurements of your stream:

Resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended bitrate
480p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

Use the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming a destination from an old command is still correct. Test the encoder before going live, then monitor stream health and messages while it runs. For radio audio, verify the selected audio codec is AAC or MP3 and that the encoder is producing audio; a compatible output setting cannot compensate for a source that has stopped supplying data.

Common failure patterns and what to check

Pattern What to investigate next
Broken pipe appears immediately Inspect the first preceding error; confirm the destination URL and stream key in Live Control Room; check ingest state and settings.
Input progress stops before the output error Check whether the radio source disconnected, stalled, or reached an input boundary. Use a local-file test to isolate the source from the destination where practical.
It fails after streaming normally Compare the failure timestamp with network events, input transitions, and YouTube stream-health messages. A long delay does not by itself identify the cause.
FFmpeg reports a trailer-writing error Read earlier log lines first. The trailer error can be a downstream symptom of an output that had already stopped accepting writes.
The same setup works in a local recording but not to YouTube Focus on the live destination, credentials, ingest state, compatible settings, and sustained outbound connectivity.

What information is needed for a specific fix?

Without the failure details, there is no justified one-line FFmpeg change to prescribe. To narrow down a particular case, collect:

  • The FFmpeg command, with the stream key redacted.
  • The FFmpeg version and build information.
  • The complete log from before the first warning or error.
  • Whether the radio input is local or remote, and whether input progress continues at failure.
  • YouTube Live Control Room’s ingest and stream-health status at the same time.
