To show games and prerecorded clips in one continuing YouTube Live stream, compose the feed in an encoder such as OBS. OBS can play a local playlist through its VLC Video source and let you switch scenes manually while the broadcast stays live. The cited OBS documentation does not establish an automatic schedule for rotating several separate playlists.
First, clarify what “playlist” means
- YouTube playlist: A collection of YouTube videos that a viewer can play or loop. YouTube’s playlist instructions concern playback on YouTube, not controls for changing the content of a creator’s outgoing live stream. YouTube’s playlist-looping help and playlist management guidance explain those viewer and channel functions.
- Encoder media playlist: A list of local media files fed into the video composition before it goes to YouTube. OBS’s VLC Video source supports this kind of playlist, with loop and shuffle options. OBS documents the source and its requirements here.
If by “rotate” you mean switching between live games, use game-capture or other capture sources in separate OBS scenes. If you mean playing recorded gaming videos, use media sources. You can also combine both in a scene.
Set up one live stream with OBS
1. Confirm YouTube Live is enabled
YouTube supports encoder-based streams for gameplay and overlays. Make sure live streaming is enabled on your channel before your planned session. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this check until just before going live. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
2. Add game and media sources
- In OBS, create a scene for each game or content layout you want to show. Add the appropriate gameplay capture source, such as Game Capture on Windows, or another suitable capture source for your setup.
- For one prerecorded file, add an OBS Media Source and select the local file.
- For a playlist of local files, add a VLC Video source and add the media items in the order you want. Set loop or shuffle as needed. OBS says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear.
- Check audio routing and source visibility in each scene. If game audio and prerecorded clips use different sources, make sure the intended audio is active and audible in the scene you will show.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube
Use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to connect the encoder to the intended live stream. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not share it or expose it in a recording or screenshot. Keep the same live broadcast active while you change what OBS sends; changing a scene changes the composed picture, not the YouTube watch-page playlist.

4. Switch the content during the broadcast
OBS hotkeys can switch to a specific scene or show and hide sources. Assign and test the hotkeys you need before going live, then switch scenes when you want to move between a live game and a media layout. The OBS guides document scene and source controls, including hotkeys: Sources Guide and OBS Studio Overview Guide.
This supports operator-controlled switching while one stream remains live. The cited documentation confirms a VLC playlist within one source and manual scene/source controls; it does not establish a native timer that automatically rotates among several distinct playlist sources. If unattended scheduled rotation is essential, verify the current behavior of any OBS automation or plugin you plan to rely on before building the broadcast around it.

5. Test the complete sequence
Before the actual session, run a short test. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring audio and video quality. Confirm local files play, the playlist order and loop or shuffle behavior are right, scene changes work, and audio does not disappear or overlap unexpectedly. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover preview and monitoring.
Choose the approach that fits your rotation
| What you want to show | Documented approach | How switching works |
|---|---|---|
| One playlist of prerecorded local clips | OBS VLC Video source; VLC must be installed | Loop or shuffle the playlist within the source |
| Several scenes, games, or content layouts | Separate OBS scenes and sources | Operator switches scenes or shows/hides sources with controls such as hotkeys |
| A YouTube watch-page playlist | YouTube playlist playback | Viewer playback and looping; not a documented control for changing the outgoing live feed |
| Automatic timed rotation among multiple separate playlists | Not established by the cited OBS documentation | Verify a current automation or plugin workflow before relying on it |
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC, then check the source list again. OBS identifies VLC as a requirement for that source.
- The viewer’s YouTube playlist is not changing your live output: That playlist controls viewer playback. Put local media in OBS and switch the encoder’s scene or source instead.
- A playlist plays but does not change scenes: A playlist inside a VLC Video source is not the same thing as a schedule that switches among separate OBS scenes. Use manual scene controls, or verify an automation workflow independently.
- The stream preview has missing or unexpected sound or video: Check the active scene, source visibility, audio routing, and local file playback in OBS, then verify the result in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before relying on it.
- You cannot start the broadcast: Check that live streaming is enabled and that the encoder is connected to the intended YouTube stream. First-time channel activation may take up to 24 hours.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Using OBS to play a file does not establish that you have the rights to stream it. Before broadcasting game footage, music, cutscenes, or clips, check the applicable rights and the game publisher’s streaming rules. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance also recommends monitoring the stream; a successful technical setup does not guarantee that every item is permitted or that a stream will remain available.
