If OBS repeats the same gaming video, first check the source type. A regular Media Source plays one file, so its Loop setting repeats that file; for multiple videos, use VLC Video Source and make sure its playlist contains every intended file. VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed, with 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. OBS’s Media Sources guide explains the distinction.
Identify the OBS source that is repeating
In the Sources list, select the repeating item and open its properties. Check its source type before changing loop settings: the same symptom can mean a single-file source is behaving as configured, an incomplete playlist, or a version-specific issue with a third-party plugin.
- Media Source: This source selects an individual media file. If Loop is enabled, that file plays again when it ends; it does not advance through a collection.
- VLC Video Source: This source supports a playlist of items. OBS’s guide describes it as allowing a playlist similar to an Image Slideshow.
- Media Playlist Source: This is a third-party plugin, not the built-in VLC Video Source. Its version and OBS compatibility matter.
Fix a VLC Video Source playlist that does not advance
- Open the source properties. Select the VLC Video Source in the Sources list and open Properties.
- Check the playlist entries. Confirm that every intended video appears as a separate entry. Inspect the paths and make sure they point to the intended files rather than repeatedly pointing to one file.
- Set the loop behavior deliberately. VLC Video Source’s Loop Playlist setting controls whether playback restarts after it reaches the end of the list. It does not convert a one-file Media Source into a playlist. OBS’s guide lists Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default.
- Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS. VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed to appear in OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS’s guide specifies 64-bit VLC.
- Review visibility behavior. VLC Video Source’s Visibility Behaviour setting determines whether playback stops and restarts, pauses and resumes, or continues while the source is hidden. This affects playback when the source is not visible, not which files are in the playlist.
OBS’s VLC source implementation also registers playlist next and previous hotkeys. If manually advancing works but automatic playback does not, note that result as a diagnostic clue; it does not by itself identify the cause.
If you are using Media Playlist Source
Check the installed plugin version and the OBS version before applying advice about a plugin bug. The plugin’s release notes document a fix for failure to advance when the next video path was the same, including a case where only one file was looped. The notes state that plugin version 0.1.0 and later require OBS 31 or newer. This is a plugin-specific, version-sensitive fix—not evidence that the built-in VLC Video Source has the same defect.

What to check if the playlist still repeats
- Write down the exact source type shown in OBS properties.
- Record your OBS version, operating system, and VLC version and bitness.
- Count the playlist entries and inspect their paths. Note whether the entries are individual media files or an .xspf playlist.
- Test whether manual next and previous controls move through the entries, and whether the issue occurs only when the source is hidden.
- Capture a current OBS log and include these details when asking for help.
A 2022 report titled “VLC Video Source only playing one .xspf file instead of multiple from a directory?” describes this behavior in OBS 27.2.4. It is a report about that setup and version, not proof of a general problem in current OBS releases. Read the dated issue report.
