YouTube may not capture a livestream that runs longer than 12 hours. Its current help guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes duration a plausible explanation for a missing gaming replay—not proof of what happened to any particular stream.
First, check whether the replay is actually missing
- In YouTube Studio, open Content → Live and look through your past streams. YouTube identifies the Live tab as the place to access previous, current, and upcoming streams. See YouTube’s encoder-streaming guide.
- If you find the stream, check its visibility setting. A replay that exists but is not publicly visible can look missing to viewers.
- If it is not there, check any local recording you made before concluding that no copy remains.
YouTube’s encoder guidance covers gameplay streaming, so this archive warning is relevant to gaming broadcasts sent through an encoder as well as other livestreams.
Why a stream longer than 12 hours may have no replay
YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The wording describes a risk, not a guarantee that every stream under the threshold will be saved or that duration caused a particular failure. The official guidance does not publish a statistic for how often long gaming streams fail to archive.
If you need the replay, keep the session under 12 hours. YouTube says shorter streams can be automatically archived; that is not a promise that every one will appear.

Protect the replay with a local recording
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. This only helps if local recording was configured and the file was actually saved; it cannot recreate a platform archive that was never captured.
- During the broadcast, check that the local recording file exists and that its size continues to grow.
- Afterward, verify that the file opens and plays before deleting or overwriting it.
- Choose storage capacity according to the recording’s bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and how long you want to retain it. There is no useful one-size-fits-all capacity without those details.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips advise checking local archive integrity and file growth. An external drive or SSD can store a separate local recording, but it cannot recover a recording that was never made.

Do not confuse DVR with the post-stream archive
DVR is the ability for viewers to pause and rewind while a stream is live. It is separate from YouTube creating a replay after the broadcast ends. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Turning DVR off changes seeking during the live stream; YouTube says viewers can still watch a recording of the entire stream once it is available. See Turn on DVR on live streams.
If the replay is still missing
- Recheck YouTube Studio → Content → Live and confirm whether the stream is absent or simply has a visibility setting you did not expect.
- Look for the local recording, if you enabled one, and verify that it plays.
- If you are eligible for Creator Support, contact it with the stream details. YouTube’s guidance does not promise that an archive which was never captured can be restored.
A TeamYouTube community FAQ dated December 3, 2018, discussed a particularly long stream taking up to a day to process. That older post is not a current processing-time guarantee, so do not rely on a fixed wait period.
