For an always-on Indian music stream where live chat is not central, start with Normal latency and enable DVR in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Normal latency is YouTube’s recommended mode for non-interactive streams; DVR lets viewers pause and rewind while the stream is live. Use Low or Ultra-low latency only when real-time interaction matters enough to accept more buffering risk.
What latency and DVR change
Latency is the delay between a stream being captured and viewers seeing it. Lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer, which can make buffering or interruptions more likely. YouTube frames the choices around how interactive a broadcast is, rather than recommending the lowest delay for every channel. YouTube’s latency guidance
DVR is a separate playback control: when enabled, viewers can pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream. It does not make the broadcast lower-latency or replace an archive. YouTube’s DVR guidance
Choose a latency mode for the channel
| Mode | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive broadcasts, such as continuous music with little live conversation | YouTube describes this as its highest-quality option for viewers because buffering is lowest. It is the source-backed starting point for a music stream where chat response is not central. |
| Low | Some audience interaction, such as polls | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds; that is a platform description, not a guarantee for a particular stream. 4K is unsupported in this mode. |
| Ultra-low | Real-time conversation or highly interactive engagement | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under five seconds, with increased buffering risk. That timing is not guaranteed for a particular stream. 4K is unsupported. |
For a continuous bhajan, kirtan, Gurbani, or other music feed that does not depend on immediate replies, choose Normal. If the channel actively answers viewers in near real time, consider Low or Ultra-low and test under the actual streaming conditions. Webcam and mobile streams do not expose this latency control, according to YouTube’s guidance.

Set latency and DVR in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, then choose an existing stream or create one.
- In the Live Control Room stream dashboard, open Stream settings.
- Set Stream latency to Normal, Low, or Ultra-low according to how much real-time interaction the programme needs.
- Open Additional settings and switch DVR on or off. For a music channel, enabling it gives viewers control to pause and rewind the live programme.
- Before a scheduled broadcast, test the encoder with representative audio and movement. While live, monitor stream health and the available real-time metrics.
YouTube allows DVR to be toggled during a live broadcast, but a change applies only to viewers who begin playback after the change. Viewers already watching may not receive the changed behavior. See Manage live stream settings and Turn on DVR on live streams.
Plan encoder quality and monitor the broadcast
Latency is not a substitute for a stable encode or connection. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings in conditions similar to the planned event and selecting a bitrate compatible with the connection. The appropriate bitrate depends on the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity; without those details, there is no responsible single bitrate to prescribe. Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions recommendations for the format you intend to send, then watch stream health and real-time metrics in Live Control Room. Keep DVR, replay, and archiving distinct
DVR helps people who join a live stream catch up by pausing or rewinding; an archive is a saved recording for later viewing. YouTube may limit or disable DVR on streams longer than 12 hours. It can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a continuous broadcast, do not treat the live player’s DVR or YouTube’s automatic archive as your only recording plan: keep a local archive backup and plan how recordings will be preserved or divided. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Clear music rights before going live
Latency and DVR settings do not grant permission to broadcast music. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies copyrighted material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and interrupt or terminate it if the issue continues. For licensed third-party music, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist; a licence alone may not prevent interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted.
