You can keep a YouTube livestream running from a Windows laptop by using an encoder such as OBS Studio, keeping the laptop awake and plugged into power, and maintaining enough stable upload bandwidth for your chosen bitrate. But a laptop is not a guaranteed 24/7 broadcast appliance: power or internet interruptions, overheating, software failures and Windows restarts can stop the stream. Set up recovery and monitoring, test your exact setup, and make a separate recording if you need a complete 24-hour replay.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 laptop that can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate without sustained performance problems. OBS supports both operating systems, but that alone does not mean every laptop can handle every setting.
- A reliable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity, plus a power adapter for continuous operation.
- OBS Studio or another encoder, and the YouTube server URL and stream key for your broadcast.
For India, check your own provider’s sustained upload and data limits, and consider what happens if power or internet service fails at your location. Those conditions vary by city, ISP, plan and equipment; a general national figure would not tell you whether your setup is sufficient.
Set up the YouTube stream and OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Select Go Live, then create a stream or choose an existing one. Set the title, description, visibility and other stream details before broadcasting. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and key. Enter these in OBS’s streaming settings, selecting the service/server details that YouTube provides. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it. If someone else gets it, reset it in YouTube Studio. See Manage live stream settings.
- Configure OBS. If this is your first stream, run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and test its suggestions rather than assuming the laptop can handle a particular resolution. OBS’s Quick Start Guide describes the wizard and initial setup.
- Keep Windows awake while plugged in. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts and set the plugged-in sleep timeout so the laptop does not sleep during the planned stream. Screen-off and sleep are separate controls. Test that OBS continues sending after the display turns off. Menus may differ by Windows version or laptop power-management software. See Microsoft’s Windows power settings guidance.
- Start a private or unlisted test. Start streaming in OBS, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and inspect stream health before making the broadcast public or leaving it unattended. Use the actual audio and representative motion from the intended content; YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality.
Choose bitrate, resolution and keyframes
Choose settings the laptop and connection can sustain, not simply the highest available quality. Measure upload speed where and when the stream will run; download speed does not show how much data your connection can send. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom, and total stream bitrate must fit within available upload capacity. Other devices using the connection can reduce what is available to OBS. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 recommended video bitrates, not minimum internet-plan speeds.
| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps |
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder recommendations specify H.264, CBR (constant bitrate) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for its full recommendations.

- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
Start at a modest resolution and frame rate, run a representative test and check stream health. Increase quality only if the picture remains stable and the laptop handles encoding without trouble. A wired Ethernet connection is an option if your laptop and router support it; it may avoid some Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot increase your ISP’s upload capacity or repair an outage.
Reduce the chance of a 24/7 interruption
Power and heat
- Keep the manufacturer-appropriate power adapter connected and confirm the laptop stays on after the screen turns off.
- Check the laptop’s load and temperature during a long test. Encoding continuously can expose model-specific thermal or performance limits; there is no single safe temperature or setting for every laptop.
- A UPS may help during a power interruption, but choose one only after checking the laptop adapter and network equipment’s actual load and the runtime you need. The right capacity depends on those details.
Network and bitrate
- Use measured outbound upload performance and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. Avoid running the stream at the edge of the connection’s capacity.
- If practical, connect by Ethernet and reduce competing uploads on the same connection.
- Remember that a router, ISP or wider connectivity outage can still interrupt the broadcast. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
Reconnect, restart and monitoring
OBS has an automatic reconnect option; enable it and test what happens after a brief network interruption. It may help resume a connection, but it cannot restore power, fix a hung encoder or overheating laptop, resolve a long ISP outage, or prevent a Windows update or restart. OBS also documents a --startstreaming launch parameter, but automatic startup needs careful testing and is not a substitute for someone checking failures. See the OBS Studio overview and OBS launch parameters.

Check stream health in Live Control Room and view the public watch page on a separate device. If nobody will be present, decide in advance who can respond to an alert and restart the stream when it does not recover on its own.
Test the whole arrangement before leaving it unattended
- Run a long test using the actual scene, audio and content.
- Confirm the laptop remains awake with the display off and the adapter connected.
- Simulate a brief network interruption and verify the encoder’s reconnect behavior.
- Check stream health, laptop performance and temperature, and confirm any local recording is growing and playable.
- Consider how you will respond to power, internet or Windows restart failures that automation cannot resolve.
Plan for a complete recording
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition does not promise that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be saved as a complete replay. If you need a full copy, configure a separate local recording and verify that it is being written and can be played back; make sure the laptop has enough storage. Alternatively, divide the broadcast into shorter sessions and check that each archive is available. YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming tips discuss testing and local recording integrity.

Keep the content eligible and rights-cleared
Technical reliability does not grant permission to broadcast the material. Before scheduling a continuous stream, confirm you have the rights to every film, clip, soundtrack, image and other element in it. A documentary channel should not assume that a work is free to rebroadcast because it is old, available online, or described as educational. YouTube’s copyright rules and any restrictions on a particular channel or stream still apply. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and the relevant rights information for each work; do not use a stream key to evade a restriction.
Also consider whether a looped program has meaningful value to viewers and complies with YouTube’s monetization policies if you seek monetization. A technically continuous stream is not by itself a guarantee of monetization eligibility.
