If you want YouTube to keep playing after a video ends, turn on Autoplay or use a YouTube Mix. If you mean songs should blend together with no silence between them, that is a different feature: YouTube’s help pages do not promise gapless transitions for every playlist or device. The right fix depends on whether playback stops, buffers, or simply leaves a pause between tracks.
First identify what kind of “gap” you hear
- Nothing starts after a video ends: the queue may be over, Autoplay may be off, or YouTube may have paused Autoplay after a period of inactivity.
- The next video starts, but there is a pause or silence between songs: playlist continuation is working, but that does not mean the player is crossfading or providing guaranteed gapless audio.
- Playback stops or stutters during a video: investigate the network, app, or device rather than the playlist order.
These are separate issues. Autoplay is about what plays next; crossfade and gapless playback describe how audio transitions from one track to another.
Choose between Autoplay and a YouTube Mix

For a fixed sequence, use your own playlist and check its order and queue. YouTube Music’s playlist guidance explains how to create and edit a playlist, including reordering songs, but does not document crossfade or guarantee gapless transitions.
Turn on Autoplay or start a Mix
Check Autoplay
- Open the YouTube player on the device you are using and find the Autoplay control.
- Turn Autoplay on. YouTube documents that controls can vary by device, so check the player on the specific phone, browser, or TV where playback is stopping.
- Play a video and let it reach the end. If nothing follows, check that a next item is available and that Autoplay is still enabled.
YouTube may show a “Continue watching?” prompt during Autoplay after 30 minutes of uninterrupted watching on mobile, 60 minutes on web, or 180 minutes on TV. Those timings explain one reason an unattended session may stop; they are not audio-transition settings.

Use a YouTube Mix
- Open YouTube’s Mix feature and choose a Mix suited to what you want to hear.
- Start playback. If you want to keep a Mix available, use YouTube’s save-to-library option.
- Choose this instead of a fixed playlist only if you are comfortable with a personalized sequence rather than a guaranteed hand-picked order.
Make a fixed playlist, without assuming it will be gapless
- In YouTube Music, create a playlist and add the tracks you want.
- Open the playlist’s editing controls to reorder tracks into the sequence you want.
- Start the playlist and check the queue. If it ends without continuing, check Autoplay separately; a playlist’s order and Autoplay’s continuation are distinct controls.
YouTube Music’s official playlist instructions cover creating and editing playlists, but do not establish universal gapless playback. A YouTube Music Community Product Expert response from November 2022 discussed gapless playback for Premium users and said crossfade was not available at that time. That is dated community guidance, not a verified current guarantee. Current crossfade behavior across YouTube apps, browsers, devices, and account types is not established by the official help pages cited here.
Fix buffering or unexpected playback interruptions
If playback cuts out within a video or repeatedly buffers, YouTube Music recommends checking the connection and then troubleshooting the app or device. Its support guidance gives at least 3 Mbps for Wi-Fi and recommends at least four bars for mobile connectivity; these are recommendations, not guarantees that every interruption will disappear.

- Check that your Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection is stable. If possible, try another network to see whether the problem follows the connection.
- Restart the device and try playback again.
- Check for and install available system updates.
- If you are using the YouTube Music app, clear its cache, then reopen the app and test playback.
What YouTube Music Premium does—and does not establish
YouTube lists background play for music, music without ads, audio-only playback, and downloads among YouTube Music Premium benefits. These are distinct from crossfade or a universal promise of gapless playback. Feature availability can vary by country or region and account.
