Your application still needs to supply the catalog, current prices and stock, product cards, cart, checkout, and order handling. The core integration is to insert timed metadata into a live IVS stream, then use the IVS Player to receive each cue and update your own shopping interface.
Decide whether you need a low-latency channel or a real-time stage
Choose the IVS mode around how viewers participate. A low-latency channel is for broadcasting to an audience; AWS describes channel delivery as under five seconds, depending on location and broadcaster settings, and says the IVS Player is required to achieve that low latency. A real-time stage is for interactive host-and-guest participation, with AWS describing latency under 300 milliseconds. These are AWS-published capabilities, not guarantees for every setup.
| Option | Best fit | Latency and audience considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Low-latency channel | One-to-many shopping broadcasts where viewers watch and interact through your application. | AWS describes delivery under five seconds, subject to location and settings. Use the IVS Player for the low-latency goal. |
| Real-time stage | Shows where hosts and guests need to interact with stage-level latency. | AWS describes under 300 ms and audiences beyond 25,000 viewers and up to 12 hosts, subject to service quotas. These are stated product capabilities, not a deployment-specific performance guarantee. |
| Stage broadcast to a channel | Combining interactive stage participants with a one-to-many channel audience. | Channel viewers receive channel latency, not the stage’s under-300-ms latency. |
For a conventional live-shopping stream, start with a low-latency channel unless hosts or guests must join a real-time conversation. If the product cue and viewer interface depend on synchronized metadata, use the IVS Player; third-party HLS players are not supported for the low-latency goal. Latency varies with geography, network, and streaming configuration. AWS IVS low-latency overview and real-time overview describe the modes and capabilities.
Build the video path and secure access
IVS provides the video ingest, processing, delivery, and playback layer. Your streaming setup can use an SDK, the AWS console for testing, OBS, or another compatible software or hardware encoder. AWS documents RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT ingest for low-latency channels; for RTMPS, its guidance specifies TLS 1.2 or later. The low-latency guide lists H.264 video and AAC-LC audio. See the streaming configuration guide and getting-started guide.

- Create an AWS account and configure IAM following the IVS getting-started flow. In production, grant only the permissions the application and operators need.
- Create an IVS channel and securely provide its ingest details to the chosen encoder. Treat channel stream keys as credentials: do not put them in client-side code, public documents, or logs.
- Configure your encoder for the channel’s ingest settings, then start a test stream and verify playback with the IVS Player on the devices and networks your audience will use.
- Check service quotas, stream access controls, and measures for preventing undesired content or viewers before launch.
AWS’s setup documentation lists a maximum stream duration of 48 hours, after which a stream disconnects. Verify current service quotas and limits when planning production broadcasts. AWS also notes that network issues can cause recording data loss and that IVS prioritizes the live stream; if you need a recording backup, make a local recording with your streaming tool. See the IVS setup guide.
Set encoder keyframes and test the full viewing experience
A two-second keyframe interval is a reasonable starting point in the IVS getting-started guidance. The configuration documentation discusses one-second keyframes as a possible latency tradeoff: more frequent keyframes can mean more adaptive-bitrate changes and possible buffering. Choose based on the experience you need, then test both the encoder-to-IVS path and playback under realistic network conditions.

| Keyframe interval | When to consider it | Trade-off to test |
|---|---|---|
| 2 seconds | General starting configuration. | Check startup, playback stability, and cue timing on target devices. |
| 1 second | When attempting to reduce latency. | More frequent adaptive-bitrate changes and possible buffering; confirm the improvement is worthwhile in your actual setup. |
Follow the IVS streaming configuration guidance for the selected ingest and encoder, and use the IVS Player when low latency and timed-metadata events matter. The exact end-to-end result depends on broadcaster settings, viewer location, and network conditions.
Design product cues around your own catalog
Timed metadata lets an application associate information with a point in the stream timeline. AWS documents it as a way to send product details for live shopping and says cues are synchronized to the same point relative to the stream for viewers regardless of latency or geography. That is timeline synchronization, not a promise of a particular wall-clock arrival time: AWS says insertion happens as soon as possible and does not guarantee when it occurs.

Define a compact, versioned payload in your application. For example, it might contain a cue type, a product identifier, and optional display context. This is an application-design choice, not an AWS-prescribed schema. Prefer resolving an identifier against your own catalog rather than treating the cue as authoritative for price or stock. On receipt, fetch current product details from your backend and apply your normal purchase safeguards; a cue can become stale while a viewer is watching.
Insert metadata while the channel is live
AWS documents programmatic insertion through the IVS API and broadcast SDKs. The channel must be live when metadata is inserted, and the caller needs the relevant ivs:PutMetadata permission.
Rank #4
Using the AWS CLI
Send the payload to the live channel with the documented command shape:
aws ivs put-metadata --channel-arn <channel-arn> --metadata <payload>
Replace the bracketed values with the target channel ARN and your metadata payload. Keep the payload aligned with the schema your application expects, and do not expose credentials used to authorize the command.

Using a broadcast SDK
The broadcast SDK provides sendTimedMetadata on Android and iOS. Use the SDK path when the broadcasting application itself is responsible for sending cues; use the API path when your backend or another authorized service controls cue insertion. See the IVS timed metadata documentation.
Receive the cue and update your shopping UI
- Subscribe to the IVS Player metadata event. On Web, AWS documents
TEXT_METADATA_CUE; Android and iOS have corresponding cue callbacks. - Parse and validate the cue against the version and fields your application supports. Handle malformed or unknown cues without interrupting playback.
- Use the product identifier to request current catalog information from your application backend.
- Render or update your own product card, then direct purchase actions through your own cart, checkout, and order flow.
The player event mechanism is an IVS capability. The catalog lookup, stock validation, interface, and transaction safeguards are responsibilities of your application or commerce platform, not features established by the IVS metadata documentation. Do not let an old cue alone determine what a customer is charged or whether an item is available. Consult the IVS Player metadata guide for event handling.
Reuse cues in replay carefully
IVS timed metadata is carried as ID3 tags in video segments and remains available in recorded video. The player can emit cue events during both live and recorded playback, so the same cue-to-interface logic may support replay. The application still needs to decide how replay cues interact with current catalog details, expired offers, and present-day stock; the cue itself does not establish those commerce rules. See the timed metadata guide and Player metadata guide.
Operational checks before launch
- Test the complete route from encoder through channel, player event, catalog request, and product UI, rather than checking video playback alone.
- Test on target devices and networks; geography and streaming configuration affect latency.
- Confirm the active-stream requirement and IAM permission for every metadata insertion path.
- Plan for the documented 48-hour stream limit and verify current service quotas for your production use.
- If recording matters, account for the possibility of recording data loss during network issues and consider a local recording backup.
- Estimate AWS charges using current AWS pricing tools for your region, configuration, viewers, watch time, and recording or storage choices; the service cost is not a single fixed figure.
Or let it run in the cloud
Amazon IVS is the video infrastructure for an application you build. If your actual goal is simpler—keeping uploaded video live on a YouTube channel—StreamNeo is a separate option, not an IVS integration. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based live shopping.
