First protect the recording, then choose the workflow that matches the result you want.
1. Make sure the livestream recording is safe
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube Help recommends recording a local archive as a backup. If you streamed with an encoder, check that the local recording is intact and that the file has continued growing as expected.
In YouTube Studio, open the content area and find your live archives. From there, you can adjust an archive’s visibility or delete it. Keep a local copy if the recording matters to you; an external SSD or hard drive is one optional place to store it, but YouTube does not require a particular storage device.
2. Choose what you want to publish
| Workflow | Best for | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Trim or cut the archive | Removing an opening wait, dead air, or a problem section from the main recording | Edits the existing video. YouTube documents the feature for videos shorter than six hours; the URL, views, and comments remain the same. |
| Create a highlight | Publishing a shorter moment from the live event | Creates a separate video, which YouTube says is published automatically. |
| Clips and Shorts | Creating separate derivatives from a long-form video | Select a segment using transcript text or timestamps, preview it, and create a draft for upload. |
| Mobile live Short highlight | Turning an eligible vertical mobile livestream into a Short highlight | Uses a separate eligibility path; the saved Short is private by default. |
3. Trim the original archive in YouTube Studio
Use this option when you want to clean up the main archive rather than publish a second video. YouTube’s trim-and-cut feature is documented for videos shorter than six hours and works on a computer without re-uploading the video.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Before editing, download a copy or use Google Takeout if you need to preserve the original. As of June 2025, YouTube’s Studio Editor documentation says saved changes cannot be undone with “Revert to original.”
- In YouTube Studio, open the live archive from the content area and choose the Studio Editor trim-and-cut controls.
- Drag the handles to remove unwanted material at the start or end. To remove a section in the middle, use the cut controls to mark that segment.
- Review the full edit before saving, especially at each new join, to make sure you have not removed speech or context you intended to keep.
- Save the edit when you are satisfied. The existing video keeps its URL, views, and comments.
4. Create a highlight from a livestream
A highlight is a separate, shorter video taken from the live event. You can make one during or after the stream. If you know a moment is worth revisiting, insert a stream marker while live; markers appear on the highlight timeline and make it easier to find moments in a long broadcast. A solo creator can add markers and build the highlight afterward, while a team member can mark moments during the event.
- Open the livestream’s highlight workflow in YouTube Studio.
- Choose the segment by dragging the timeline handles or entering timestamps. Use stream markers as navigation points if you added them.
- Adjust the audio, including muting if appropriate, then add a title and description.
- Choose the visibility setting and create the highlight. YouTube says the resulting video is published automatically.
5. Make a separate clip or Short from a long-form video
For a derivative that is not made through the live-highlight workflow, use YouTube’s Clips and Shorts tools. Select a segment by transcript text or timestamps, preview it, and create a draft for upload. AI-powered suggestions and outlines are not available everywhere; YouTube says their availability varies by country and language.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Before publishing, check the draft’s framing, captions, title, description, and visibility. A short excerpt may need enough context to make sense on its own, particularly if the full stream contains a long discussion or documentary segment.
6. Check eligibility for a mobile live Short highlight
YouTube’s mobile Short highlight rules are specific. The source livestream must meet all of these conditions:

The saved Short highlight is private by default. Change its visibility if you want viewers to find it; do not assume that saving the highlight makes it public.
7. Handle copyright claims before publishing
If a claim identifies copyrighted material in the video, YouTube lists trimming the claimed segment, replacing claimed music with music from the Audio Library, or muting the claimed audio as possible actions. Review the resulting edit before saving. If preserving the original matters, keep a downloaded copy or use Google Takeout before applying changes.

8. Organize the archive and derivatives
Keep the full archive and its highlights easy to distinguish. YouTube recommends organizing the archive and highlight clips into playlists. Use clear titles and descriptions so viewers can tell whether a video is the complete event, a selected segment, or a Short.
