How to Encode Regional-Language Videos for a YouTube Loop Stream Without Losing Subtitles

Keep regional-language subtitles intact in a YouTube loop by choosing burned-in text or a supported live-caption track, checking UTF-8 and font coverage, and testing the loop boundary.

To keep regional-language subtitles intact in a YouTube loop stream, decide first whether captions should be part of the picture or a separate track. Burn them into the video if they must always be visible; use YouTube’s supported live-caption workflow if viewers should be able to toggle them. For subtitle files used in YouTube’s documented SRT workflow, use plain UTF-8. Then check the target script in an encoded sample and verify the captions in YouTube’s preview before relying on the loop.

Choose how subtitles should reach viewers

There are two different approaches, and they solve different needs:

  • Burned-in subtitles: The text is rendered into the video image. It stays visible to every viewer and does not depend on a separate caption track being received during the live stream.
  • Separate live captions: Captions are delivered to YouTube through a supported live-caption method, such as embedded 608/708 captions or caption software that sends captions using HTTP POSTs. Viewers can use the caption controls, but the caption feed must be configured and sent correctly.

YouTube currently supports one live caption track. Although the 608/708 standard can carry up to four language tracks, YouTube’s current guidance says only one track is supported for live captions (YouTube Help, checked in 2026). If you need multiple languages available simultaneously, that limit matters: consider burning the necessary languages into the image or choosing which single live track to provide.

Burning captions makes them permanent in the picture, so viewers cannot turn them off and you cannot correct the text without changing the video. A separate track avoids that trade-off but requires a supported caption-ingestion setup. In either case, check readability on a small screen and confirm that the workflow suits the audience and language options you need.

Prepare the subtitle text and rendering environment

Use the right character encoding

YouTube’s supported-file guidance specifies plain UTF-8 for SRT subtitle files (YouTube Help: subtitle files). If an SRT came from older software or an unknown source, identify its actual character encoding and convert the file to UTF-8 before using it. Changing a filename or labeling a file “UTF-8” does not convert its contents; incorrect encoding can produce question marks or other garbled characters.

Check font coverage and glyphs

For burned-in subtitles, the video renderer must have a font that covers the target script. FFmpeg’s subtitle-filter documentation provides font-family selection and a character-encoding option (FFmpeg documentation), but neither the documentation nor a font name alone guarantees that every language’s characters will render on your machine. Coverage depends on the chosen font and rendering environment.

Before encoding the whole video, make a short sample containing the language’s full character repertoire as used in the subtitles, including diacritics or combining marks when relevant, punctuation, and representative line breaks. Inspect the resulting video at actual playback size. Look for missing-glyph boxes, substituted characters, clipped text, awkward wrapping, and poor contrast against the image. Use a font confirmed to cover the script in the actual rendering environment, then repeat the sample check after changing the font, system, or rendering setup.

Configure YouTube ingestion for the live loop

For RTMP or RTMPS encoder ingest, YouTube’s current general guidance accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds; it also recommends RTMPS and testing the setup before going live (YouTube Help: encoder settings, checked in 2026).

Choose resolution and bitrate for your source, encoder, and available connection rather than treating one setting as suitable for every stream. These video-ingest settings do not repair subtitle encoding or missing glyphs: test the rendered picture and, if you use separate captions, test that caption path independently. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance when configuring a different encoder or ingest mode.

If you use HLS ingest

YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte ranges. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP (YouTube Help: HLS ingest). These are transport requirements; meeting them does not fix subtitle-file encoding or font coverage.

Test subtitles across the loop boundary

  1. Encode a short sample. Use representative subtitle lines from the start, middle, and end of the source. Inspect the target script, punctuation, line breaks, and visual readability in the output.
  2. Test the intended caption path. For burned-in text, confirm it appears in the video image. For separate live captions, confirm that the encoder or caption software sends captions through a supported YouTube workflow and that the single live track contains the intended language.
  3. Check timing at both ends. Preview captions near the end and beginning of the loop. Confirm that text remains synchronized after playback repeats and that a subtitle is not cut off or stranded across the transition.
  4. Review YouTube’s live preview and stream health. Verify that actual glyphs and caption behavior look right in the preview, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health notices while the stream runs. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health (YouTube encoder guidance); checking the script and loop transition is an additional practical quality check.

Troubleshoot subtitle loss or garbled text

What you see Likely area to check What to do
Question marks or corrupted characters in burned-in subtitles The SRT may not actually be UTF-8, or the text may have been converted incorrectly. Identify the source encoding, convert the file to plain UTF-8, and render a new short sample. Do not just relabel the file.
Empty boxes or missing characters The selected font or rendering environment may lack glyphs for the target script. Choose a font with verified script coverage in that environment and inspect a sample containing the affected characters.
Burned-in subtitles appear, but separate captions do not The live-caption feed may not be configured or sent through a supported path. Check whether you are using embedded 608/708 captions or caption software sending captions through HTTP POSTs, then verify the caption track in YouTube’s preview.
Only one language track is available YouTube currently supports one live caption track, even though 608/708 can carry up to four. Select the live-caption language viewers need, or use burned-in subtitles for text that must always be visible.
Captions drift, vanish, or break at the repeat The subtitle timing or stream behavior at the loop transition may not align with the repeated video. Inspect the final and first subtitle events in a test loop, adjust the source timing or loop point as needed, and verify the transition in YouTube’s preview.
YouTube reports stream-health problems The video ingest configuration or connection may not match YouTube’s guidance. Check the encoder’s codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and selected RTMP/RTMPS or HLS requirements against YouTube’s current settings. Treat ingest health and subtitle rendering as separate checks.
