Set the outgoing encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds for a pre-recorded program streamed as YouTube Live. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If the encoder uses frames instead of seconds, use 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. Those frame counts are conversions of the 2-second interval, not separate YouTube recommendations.
What GOP length and keyframe interval mean
A GOP, or group of pictures, is a sequence of video frames organized around keyframes. In an encoder, “GOP size,” “keyframe interval,” and “keyframe frequency” may refer to the control that determines how often keyframes are sent. YouTube’s general live encoder guidance calls this “keyframe frequency” and recommends 2 seconds, with a maximum of 4 seconds. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the source for that platform target.
The interval can be expressed in seconds or frames. To convert seconds to frames, multiply by the outgoing frame rate: 2 seconds × 30 frames per second = 60 frames; 2 seconds × 60 frames per second = 120 frames. Confirm whether your encoder’s control expects seconds or frames before entering a value.
Set the outgoing stream’s interval
- Identify the output sent to YouTube. In OBS or your chosen encoder, find the streaming/output encoder’s control named “Keyframe Interval,” “Keyframe Frequency,” or “GOP Size.” Make sure you are changing the live output, not only the recording preset.
- Set it to 2 seconds. If the field takes frames, enter 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. Do not use an interval above 4 seconds.
- Confirm outgoing resolution and frame rate. YouTube Live Control Room generally detects these automatically. YouTube Help says manual selection is available when using a custom stream key with manual settings enabled.
- Check the codec-appropriate bitrate. YouTube’s guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, its current Help page lists 1080p at 30 fps as H.264 minimum 5 Mbps and recommended 14 Mbps, or AV1/H.265 minimum 4 Mbps and recommended 10 Mbps. For 1080p at 60 fps, it lists H.264 minimum 6 Mbps and recommended 17 Mbps, or AV1/H.265 minimum 4 Mbps and recommended 12 Mbps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of a particular viewing result. Use the table for your actual profile and test under conditions representative of the event. See YouTube’s current encoder settings.
- Test and inspect stream health. Send representative motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health diagnostics. The Live Streaming API identifies GOP-too-long and primary/backup GOP mismatch issues; it also cautions that ingestion problems can make detected GOP size inaccurate. What changes when the source is a pre-recorded video
The setting to verify is the cadence of the live stream that reaches YouTube—not simply the GOP already present in the uploaded file. If playback or the encoder re-encodes the source, the outgoing encoder may establish a different cadence. The cited platform and OBS guidance does not establish how every playback application handles passthrough versus re-encoding, so check your particular pipeline and validate the actual stream in YouTube’s health panel.

OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide, dated 2023-11-30, lists a keyframe interval of 2 in baseline recording settings for NVENC, x264, AMD, and Quicksync. That confirms OBS exposes the control and uses 2 in those recording baselines; it is not a substitute for checking the live streaming encoder settings or YouTube’s received stream.
RTMP/RTMPS and HLS are not interchangeable
YouTube’s general encoder table gives RTMP/RTMPS guidance: 2-second keyframes recommended, no more than 4 seconds, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and RTMPS as the recommended secure RTMP option. Do not carry HLS packaging requirements over to an RTMP workflow.

HLS ingestion has additional requirements in YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide: closed GOPs; muxed M2TS media; H.264 or HEVC video; AAC audio; and segments generally 1–4 seconds long, with a 5-second maximum. Segment duration and GOP/keyframe interval are related packaging settings, but they are not the same setting. HLS is segment-based and usually has higher latency.
Primary and backup streams
If you send both a primary and backup stream, set matching keyframe frequencies. YouTube’s Live Streaming API identifies a GOP mismatch between them as a configuration issue. A matching interval does not eliminate other possible ingest problems, so inspect the stream health diagnostics during a test.

Troubleshoot keyframe and GOP problems
- YouTube reports keyframes too far apart: Check the live output’s interval, not just the recording profile. Set 2 seconds; if the field uses frames, convert using the outgoing frame rate.
- The encoder accepts a number but the result seems wrong: Check the units. A value of 2 may mean two frames in a frames-based field rather than two seconds; use the encoder’s label or documentation to confirm.
- The source file has a suitable GOP but YouTube reports a different cadence: The playback or encoding path may be changing the outgoing stream. The behavior is application-specific; verify whether that path passes through or re-encodes and inspect the received stream.
- Health diagnostics show a GOP mismatch: Compare the primary and backup output settings and make their keyframe frequencies match.
- Detected GOP size looks inconsistent during ingest trouble: The API documentation warns that ingestion problems can make detection inaccurate. Resolve transport or encoding issues and test again before treating the detected GOP measurement as conclusive.
- HLS stream fails despite a 2-second interval: Check the separate HLS requirements—closed GOP, M2TS muxing, supported video and audio codecs, and segment duration. A correct interval alone does not satisfy them.
- Video quality or stability is poor: Check bitrate against YouTube’s codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-specific guidance, along with the actual connection and encoder conditions. A keyframe interval does not replace appropriate bitrate selection.
