How to Extract and Replace an Audio Track Before Streaming a Video on YouTube

Replace and review a prerecorded video’s audio before the event, then send the finished file to YouTube Live through an encoder.

Extract and replace the audio in your video before the stream: use a video editor to separate the original track, add and align the replacement, then export and review a finished audio-video file. When you stream, send that completed file through a YouTube-compatible encoder. YouTube Studio’s built-in editor is a narrower option: it can add music from YouTube’s Audio Library to an uploaded video, but its documented workflow does not cover extracting arbitrary source audio and replacing it with any audio you supply.

What you are editing—and what you are streaming

Audio replacement is a preproduction edit to a prerecorded video. The encoder then sends the finished picture-and-sound program to YouTube Live. Editing the file and sending the live feed are separate tasks: replacing the track in an editor does not itself start a stream.

Keep an untouched copy of the video and any audio files. A separate editor with timeline and track controls is the appropriate category to investigate when you need to extract source audio, use a supplied replacement, and prepare a final file. The right application and exact controls depend on your computer and chosen software; YouTube’s help documentation does not prescribe a third-party editor or a universal extraction procedure.

Replace the audio before the event

  1. Make working copies. Preserve the original video and audio sources, then open the video in an editor that can separate or extract its audio track.
  2. Separate the original track. Use the editor’s track or audio controls to detach the source audio from the picture. Keep it available until you have checked the replacement against the video.
  3. Add and align the replacement. Place the new track on the timeline, align it to the picture, and check its start and end points. Listen for gaps, clipping, and level differences; adjust relative levels so the result is clear and balanced.
  4. Export the finished audio-video file. Review the beginning, middle, and end for sync, unwanted silence, clipping, and abrupt cutoffs. Keep the original file so you can correct the edit without starting from a degraded export.
  5. Test before going live. Use a representative section with both typical motion and sound. Confirm that the encoder can play the export and that the preview in YouTube Live Control Room shows the expected picture and audio.

When YouTube Studio’s editor is enough

On a computer, open YouTube Studio → Content → select the video → Editor → Audio. You can preview songs from the YouTube Audio Library, add a selection, move its start, trim its duration, and save. This is useful when you want to add an Audio Library song to an uploaded video; it is not the documented method for extracting a source track and replacing it with an arbitrary prepared audio file.

  • YouTube’s help page states that, as of June 2025, saved Studio Editor changes could no longer be undone using “Revert to original.” Keep a source copy before saving.
  • The YouTube mobile app cannot change the audio track. Use a computer for this editor workflow.

Create the YouTube Live stream and connect the encoder

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select the stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live setup and enter them in your encoder. Treat the key as private; do not publish or share it.
  3. Start the encoder and wait for the stream to appear in Live Control Room. Check its preview before selecting the control to go live.
  4. Monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the event. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that a longer stream will be archived automatically.

Follow YouTube’s live encoder recommendations for the ingest you are using. Its current guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm the encoder supports your selected codec and that your upload connection can sustain the combined audio and video bitrate.

Live audio configuration YouTube-listed sample rate YouTube-listed bitrate
Stereo 44.1 kHz 128 kbps
5.1 audio 48 kHz 384 kbps

These are YouTube’s listed live encoder recommendations, not a substitute for checking the capabilities of your encoder and the selected ingest settings. Test the actual setup and connection before the event.

Do not confuse live ingest settings with upload settings

YouTube has separate upload encoding recommendations, listing MP4 and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz. The cited upload page notes that its features are available to Studio Content Manager partners. Those upload recommendations describe a different workflow; do not treat them as the settings for a live encoder feed.

Copyright and the finished program

Replacing a track does not by itself establish that you have the right to use the replacement. Use audio you created, licensed, or are otherwise authorized to use for the intended YouTube use, and check any license conditions that apply to live streaming and archiving. A song in the Audio Library is the option documented by YouTube’s Studio Editor workflow; do not assume that music from another source is cleared just because it can be added to the timeline.

Troubleshoot before and during the stream

  • The original sound is still audible: check whether the editor detached or muted the original track, then review the exported file rather than relying only on the timeline.
  • Replacement audio starts late or ends early: inspect its timeline position and trim points against the picture; replay the opening and ending after export.
  • Audio is distorted or too quiet: listen to the rendered file and adjust track levels in the editor. Check for clipping and test again through the same playback or encoder path you will use live.
  • The video and audio do not stay in sync: recheck alignment in the editor and review a representative section of the export. If the export is wrong, correct the edit and export again before connecting to the live event.
  • YouTube does not show an incoming preview: check that the encoder is running and that its stream URL and key match the selected YouTube stream. Verify network upload capacity and encoder settings.
  • Preview or stream health indicates a problem: test the chosen codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s live guidance and monitor the Live Control Room. Avoid making untested setting changes during a live event.
  • You cannot save an audio edit in Studio: check the video length and view-count/Partner Program conditions above, or prepare the replacement in a separate editor instead.
