To transfer a video playlist safely, copy the playlist file or manifest and every video or segment it references, preserve their directory structure, and verify the destination before deleting the source. Check the expected filenames and file count, compare sizes and compatible checksums, then open the playlist from its new location and test playback. Checksums can confirm that file bytes match; they cannot prove that playlist paths resolve or that playback works.
What counts as a video playlist?
Before transferring anything, identify how the playlist is built. It may be a text index—such as an M3U file—that points to separate video files, or a streaming manifest such as M3U8 that references many smaller media segments. In either case, copying only the playlist or manifest can leave it pointing to files that are missing from the destination.
Keep the complete referenced collection together, including any folders and relative paths the playlist expects. Do not rename, move, or edit files while a long transfer is in progress: the destination could otherwise contain a mixture of versions or a playlist whose references no longer match the files.
Transfer the complete set
- Make a stable source set. Save the playlist or manifest and all referenced files beneath a stable folder. If you are unsure which files it references, inspect the playlist before starting and account for the full directory tree.
- Choose a tool that reports failures. Use your provider’s upload or transfer tool and confirm that it reports errors and supports retries or resumable uploads where available. For Google Cloud Storage, one directory-upload example is
gcloud storage rsync --recursive LOCAL_DIRECTORY gs://DESTINATION_BUCKET/FOLDER_NAME. Replace the local directory and bucket path with your own. This is a Google Cloud CLI command, not a provider-neutral command. Google also documents recursivecpas an alternative for uploading a directory. Google Cloud: Upload objects from a file system. - For large objects, consider multipart or resumable transfer. Multipart upload sends an object in parts, so a failed part can be retried instead of retransmitting the whole object. AWS says to consider multipart uploads when an object reaches 100 MB; that is AWS-specific guidance, not a universal threshold. AWS: multipart upload and data integrity.
- Wait for completion and review errors. A success message is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking which files arrived and whether their contents match.
Verify that the transferred files match
Compare the expected set and sizes
Compare the source and destination file counts and relative paths. Then compare byte sizes. This catches missing files, unexpected names, and obvious incomplete transfers, but matching sizes alone do not prove that the contents are identical. Google’s Storage Transfer Service recommends checking the expected file set and count, the correct file versions, and metadata such as size and checksums after transfer. Google Cloud: Data integrity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use a compatible checksum when available
A checksum is a value calculated from file contents. Compare a source checksum with a destination checksum for the same complete file and algorithm when both sides provide compatible values. Google Cloud Storage supports CRC32C and MD5 for data validation and recommends CRC32C. MD5 is not supported in some chunked or composite-upload cases, so check the documentation for the specific upload method rather than assuming every transfer exposes a comparable checksum. Google Cloud: Data validation and change detection with checksums.
Do not assume that a tool named “rsync” always compares checksums. Google documents cases in which gcloud storage rsync compares file size and modification time instead, including some comparisons involving a local filesystem. Check the behavior for your particular source, destination, and command options.

Do not treat an S3 multipart ETag as a whole-file checksum
Amazon S3 supports additional checksums for multipart uploads, but a multipart ETag is not necessarily the MD5 checksum of the complete object. AWS explains that multipart ETags can represent a composition of part checksums. Use the documented checksum feature for your algorithm and upload mode rather than comparing ETags alone as proof of integrity. AWS: multipart upload and data integrity.
Test the playlist from the cloud destination
After the file audit, open the playlist or manifest using the destination paths or URLs. Confirm that references point to the uploaded locations, permissions allow access, and the intended player can read them. Play several entries, including one near the end of a long playlist. A byte-perfect playlist can still refer to the wrong paths, and checksums do not test path resolution, access permissions, or player compatibility.

Keep the original files until the destination audit and playback check both pass. Google Cloud’s transfer-integrity guidance describes how checks may use source checksums when available and may use other checks when they are not; the exact checks depend on the transfer setup. Google Cloud: Data integrity.
Common problems and fixes
- The playlist opens, but some videos are missing. The index may have transferred without every referenced file, or the relative folder structure changed. Compare file counts and paths with the source, then transfer the missing files while preserving the expected structure.
- The files are present, but playlist entries do not load. References may still point to local paths or an old directory. Inspect the playlist or manifest and update references only if the player and destination require different paths; then test from the destination.
- A transfer reports success, but you are not confident the files match. Audit filenames, relative paths, counts, and byte sizes. Compare compatible whole-file checksums where available rather than relying only on the completion message.
- The S3 ETag differs from a local MD5. For a multipart object, the ETag may not be a whole-object MD5. Verify with S3’s documented additional-checksum option for the upload mode instead.
- A retry starts the large upload from the beginning. Check whether your tool and provider support resumable or multipart transfer and whether the chosen workflow uses it. In multipart transfer, failed parts can be retried independently.
- Checksums are unavailable or do not compare. The source or upload mode may not expose compatible checksum metadata. Check the provider’s documented behavior; at minimum, audit the complete file set and sizes, then test the playlist at its destination.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is not just to store a playlist but to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate option: it streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
