A prerecorded video does not, by itself, invalidate a YouTube Live stream key. The encoder must use the current key and server URL for the intended stream in YouTube Studio. Check those settings first; if the error mentions SSL, timeout, or connection failure, investigate the server URL and protocol separately from the key.
First, confirm what the encoder is trying to do
When an encoder plays a recording as its input, it still sends a live feed to YouTube. The stream key is a credential in the YouTube stream settings, not a property of the video file. YouTube’s public setup instructions describe encoder feeds generally and do not establish that every application handles recorded-file playback identically. Confirm that your software is sending the file as a live encoder feed, rather than using a separate upload or platform-integration workflow.
Do not assume the key is the cause from a generic “could not connect” message. The exact wording, encoder, and account status matter. Work through the checks below in order.
Fix the key and destination in YouTube Studio

Copy the key for the intended stream
In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and select the intended stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream key shown there and paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key field. YouTube recommends copying the key from Live Control Room into a third-party encoder when it reports an error starting. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Reset a stale or compromised key, then update the encoder
If you suspect the saved key is stale or exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the value saved in the encoder with the newly generated key. Resetting alone is not enough: the encoder must use the replacement. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. See Manage live stream settings.

Check the server URL independently
In the encoder, verify the server URL as well as the key. The URL tells the encoder where to send its feed; the key identifies the stream credential. YouTube treats these as separate settings in its encoder setup instructions. Copy the URL from the settings for the intended stream rather than relying on an old saved destination.

Match RTMP or RTMPS to the URL and encoder
If the encoder is set to RTMPS, use the RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room and make sure the encoder supports RTMPS. A certificate error or timeout may point to protocol or URL compatibility rather than a wrong key. YouTube recommends checking that both the protocol and server are correct; for certain SSL errors it suggests trying port 443. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions for the applicable error instead of changing protocols as a generic key fix.

For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview before going live
Start the encoder and wait for the feed preview to appear in Live Control Room. Then select Go live. YouTube’s encoder workflow distinguishes sending the feed from starting the scheduled event.

Identify the failure by its symptoms

Settings to consider only after the connection works
Bitrate, resolution, codec, and keyframe interval are not first-line remedies for a rejected credential. If the key and destination are accepted but the stream is unhealthy or unstable, compare the encoder’s output with YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
YouTube also supports HLS ingestion for some use cases, including HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. HLS requires an HLS-configured stream key and compatible encoder, and YouTube notes that it has higher latency than RTMP. Do not switch to HLS merely because a key is rejected; use it only when your workflow and encoder call for it. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Test before the event and collect useful details
YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health. After making a change, send the feed and confirm that the preview appears before relying on the stream for an event. If the error persists, record the exact message, encoder name and version, whether the stream is scheduled or reused, protocol selection, whether a preview appears, and any channel restriction notice. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same YouTube stream key for a recorded-video stream?
A recording sent through an encoder does not inherently require a different kind of key. Use the key shown for the intended stream in Live Control Room.
Should I switch to HLS if my key is rejected?
No. HLS is for compatible encoder workflows that use an HLS-configured key; it is not a general key-rejection fix.
