Cost of Running FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi for YouTube All Month in India

Calculate the monthly electricity cost of running FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi for YouTube in India using measured wall draw and your local tariff.

There is no single monthly electricity price for running FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi in India: it depends on the setup’s average power draw at the wall and your utility’s marginal tariff. For a 30-day month, use monthly cost (₹) = average wall draw (W) × 0.72 × tariff (₹/kWh). For example, an assumed 10 W at an assumed ₹6/kWh works out to ₹43.20. Those are arithmetic assumptions, not a measured Raspberry Pi result or a nationwide tariff.

Calculate the monthly electricity cost

Use the power draw of the complete setup in watts, measured at the wall, and the rate that applies to the additional units your household consumes:

Monthly electricity cost (₹) = average wall draw (W) × 24 × billing-period days ÷ 1,000 × marginal tariff (₹/kWh)

For a 30-day month, this simplifies to 0.72 Ă— average watts Ă— rate per kWh. The calculation estimates the energy cost attributable to the device. Fixed charges should not be assigned to the Pi unless its consumption changes the applicable bill tier.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Illustrative 30-day examples

Assumed average wall draw Energy in 30 days Cost at an assumed ₹6/kWh
5 W 3.6 kWh ₹21.60
10 W 7.2 kWh ₹43.20
15 W 10.8 kWh ₹64.80

These are calculation examples, not measured power figures for a particular Pi. A 31-day period costs 31/30 times the corresponding 30-day estimate if average draw and tariff remain constant.

Find the right wattage and electricity rate

Measure the complete setup at the wall

A plug-in electricity usage meter can measure the draw of the Raspberry Pi, its power supply, and attached equipment together. Use the average wattage while FFmpeg is doing the actual job, not an idle reading, if the stream runs continuously. Raspberry Pi says its own power measurements are approximate, exclude additional USB devices, and can be exceeded when multiple USB devices or a HAT are connected. See the Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation.

Use your own marginal tariff

Check your current electricity bill or utility tariff for the rate applicable to additional consumption. Rates vary by state or union territory, utility, and consumer category, and may interact with slabs, subsidies, taxes, and fixed charges. The Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 tariff publication, for example, lists a Goa domestic average billing rate of ₹3.50/kWh. That is one published entry, not a national household rate or a substitute for your own current tariff.

Why the Pi model and FFmpeg job matter

The title alone does not specify a Pi model, source video, output format, resolution, frame rate, peripherals, or whether FFmpeg is transcoding. Those choices affect power use, and the available documentation does not establish a measured wattage or real-time performance result for an unspecified configuration.

  • Sending an already encoded file: The Pi’s workload differs from encoding video live; measure the actual streaming setup.
  • Remuxing: Changing the container without re-encoding is a different task from transcoding, so do not assume its power use matches live encoding.
  • Live transcoding: The precise model and encoding settings matter. Test the intended workload rather than treating an electricity example as proof that a Pi can encode it in real time.

Do not use the power supply’s capacity as the board’s continuous consumption. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W supply for Pi 5 and a 15 W supply for Pi 4 Model B; these are supply recommendations, not claims that either model draws that wattage continuously. The current specifications are in the official hardware documentation.

Check the video settings sent to YouTube

Electricity arithmetic does not establish whether a particular Pi can encode a stream successfully. For YouTube’s encoding guidance, consult YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings. YouTube recommends H.264 video settings and says content should be encoded and uploaded at the same frame rate at which it was recorded. Treat that as platform format guidance, not a performance certification for a Raspberry Pi.

DIY cost versus a managed cloud stream

A Pi’s electricity cost is only one part of the comparison. A home setup also depends on your continuous internet connection and leaves monitoring and outage recovery to you. Keep electricity separate from any service subscription, and consider upfront hardware costs separately from recurring costs. The StreamNeo comparison page describes its managed streaming offer and should be checked for current service terms: How Much Does 24/7 Streaming Really Cost?

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded videos in the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
