If you already own a NAS, estimate the extra electricity it uses while encoding and streaming; for a cloud VM, include compute, storage, and applicable network charges. Compare the same 24/7 workload—about 730 hours in an average month—and use your own power draw, electricity tariff, cloud region, and stream settings.
Start with the cost each option actually adds
For a home NAS, the central running cost is usually the electricity attributable to the streaming workload. For a cloud VM, the hourly compute price is only one part of the bill. Neither estimate by itself captures purchase costs, reliability, or the effort of maintaining the stream.
| Option | Monthly calculation | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| Home NAS | Average incremental watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000 × electricity price per kWh | Extra NAS and encoder draw, plus disks, cooling, or networking equipment only when they are incremental to the stream. |
| Cloud VM | VM hourly rate × operating hours, plus applicable charges | Compute, disks, network charges, and any additional services used in the chosen region and configuration. |
Use 730 hours as a convenient average-month convention for a continuously running service. Your calendar month may have more or fewer hours, so use the actual runtime when estimating a specific bill.
Estimate the incremental electricity cost of a home NAS
Measure the workload, not just the NAS model
Measure the NAS and encoder’s draw while they are doing the intended work if possible. Idle power or a generic device specification may not reflect a system that encodes continuously. If the NAS would already be on for other tasks, count only the additional energy attributable to streaming. Include disks that would not otherwise be powered, and extra cooling or networking equipment, only when they are genuinely incremental.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a 2025 average residential electricity rate of 17.30¢/kWh in 2026. That is a U.S. benchmark, not a rate for every household: the reported state range for 2025 ran from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii. Use the rate on your own bill for a local estimate. U.S. Energy Information Administration electricity data.
Illustrative 30-watt scenario
At an assumed continuous incremental draw of 30 W and an electricity price of $0.173/kWh, the calculation is 0.030 kW × 730 hours = 21.9 kWh; 21.9 × $0.173 is about $3.79 for the month. The 30 W is an example assumption, not a measured or published figure for NAS devices. Your measured draw and tariff may produce a substantially different result.

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
This electricity-only illustration excludes hardware purchase or replacement, internet service, UPS backup, and any equipment whose consumption is not incremental to streaming.
Estimate the cloud VM bill
Compute is not the whole bill
Cloud cost depends on provider, region, machine type, operating system, runtime, storage, and network terms. As one time-specific example, Google Cloud’s pricing page displayed an on-demand c4-standard-2 rate of $0.096866 per hour for its listed region example. At 730 hours, that is approximately $70.71 for compute alone. Google’s VM price table does not include disk or networking charges; those must be added for the selected setup. The displayed price is region- and pricing-model-specific, so check the current price for your actual configuration before budgeting. Google Cloud Compute Engine VM pricing.

Keep managed encoding separate from a VM design
A VM running an encoder and a managed live-encoding service are different architectures. Google says its Live Stream API is billed by active channel time and input/output resolution, with a ten-minute minimum and durations rounded up to the nearest minute. If you use that service, price its configured channels and resolutions directly rather than adding it automatically to a plain-VM estimate. Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing.
Make the streaming workload comparable
Cost comparisons only make sense when both options are doing the same job: the same runtime, resolution, frame rate, codec, and stream behavior. YouTube supports encoder workflows using a stream URL and stream key; an encoder may be software on a computer or a standalone hardware unit. A hardware encoder is optional, so include its purchase cost only if your setup actually needs one. YouTube Help: encoder streaming.

Use YouTube’s encoder requirements to size the setup
- YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS.
- YouTube recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Selected H.264 recommendations include 3 Mbps for 720p30, 5 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. These are encoder input rates, not estimates of viewer-delivery bandwidth.
- Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain and test with the expected audio and motion. Resolution, frame rate, and codec can affect encoder CPU load, the need for hardware acceleration, and managed-encoding fees.
See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current recommendations.
Do not mistake ingest traffic for viewer delivery
With YouTube ingest, the creator sends an encoded contribution stream to YouTube; YouTube handles delivery to viewers. Do not assume the origin VM sends a separate full video stream to every viewer. Check the chosen cloud provider’s ingress, egress, and network terms for the actual setup. There is no single network-cost figure that applies to an unspecified provider and region.

Compare the complete monthly picture
| Cost or constraint | Home NAS | Cloud VM |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring compute or power | Incremental measured watts × hours × local tariff | Selected VM hourly rate × hours |
| Storage | Count extra disk use or capacity only if needed for the loop library. | Add the selected disk charges; these are not included in the cited Google VM compute example. |
| Network | Verify the upload connection can sustain the stream. | Check provider network terms for the selected region and traffic; no general rate is established here. |
| Equipment and setup | Existing hardware avoids a new purchase, but replacement, UPS, or additional hardware may matter. | Configuration and maintenance still take effort; the VM estimate is not a complete cost of service. |
| Reliability exposure | Home power, internet uptime, NAS capacity, and local equipment affect continuity. | Provider and configuration affect continuity; the example prices do not establish an uptime guarantee. |
For a useful comparison, calculate low, typical, and high cases from your measured power range and actual tariff, then price the exact cloud region and machine type. Do not treat the 30 W illustration or the cited Google VM rate as a representative NAS or universal cloud price.
Choose based on your setup, not a headline number
- An already-owned NAS may have a low incremental electricity bill if its measured additional draw is modest and your tariff is low. That does not make its total cost zero: assess equipment wear, home power and internet reliability, and your time maintaining it.
- A cloud VM has a visible recurring compute charge, but the hourly rate alone understates the bill when storage, networking, or other services apply. Price the exact configuration and account for the work of operating it.
- A managed encoder is not automatically cheaper than a VM. Compare its channel-time and resolution charges with the full VM design you would otherwise run.
- New hardware changes the comparison. If you need to buy a NAS, encoder, storage, or backup power, include those costs rather than comparing only electricity with cloud compute.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a NAS or VM, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube loop running from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream runs in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
