Sometimes—but only if you compare the desktop’s full operating cost with the VPS’s compute and outbound-transfer bill. A desktop you already own may be cheaper when its measured power draw, home internet costs and upkeep are low. A VPS may cost less when its monthly fee and included transfer cover the video traffic, or when home power, connectivity and maintenance would otherwise add up. There is no universal winner.
What costs belong in the comparison?
Compare the same workload over the same period. Include upfront costs as well as recurring charges, and distinguish one stream sent to YouTube from a server delivering video to multiple viewers: their traffic requirements can be very different.
| Cost or constraint | Used desktop at home | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware and compute | Purchase price spread over the machine’s realistic remaining service life; add likely repairs. | Monthly compute price for a plan that can handle the workload. |
| Power | Measure draw at the wall while doing the intended task, then multiply by operating hours and your marginal electricity rate. | Included in the provider’s compute price, subject to its plan and terms. |
| Network transfer | Check home upload capacity, data caps, overage fees and any ISP restrictions. | Compare expected outbound traffic with the plan’s included transfer and overage rate. |
| Storage and backup | Include disks, backups and any replacement storage. | Include disk and backup charges separately if not bundled. |
| Availability and upkeep | Account for outages, power protection if needed, setup time and maintenance. | Account for administration, recovery, support and any additional services required. |
| Scale and audience | Home upload and hardware constrain what you can serve reliably. | Choose capacity and region for the workload; multiple viewers can greatly increase delivered traffic. |
How to calculate a fair monthly break-even
- Define the workload. Record operating hours per month, video bitrate, resolution, storage period, whether this is one outbound live stream or viewer playback, and expected simultaneous viewers.
- Measure desktop power. Use a wall meter while the desktop is performing the intended task. Monthly energy cost is measured watts Ă· 1,000 Ă— operating hours Ă— your electricity price per kWh. Do not substitute a generic wattage for a measurement of your machine and workload.
- Allocate the desktop’s capital cost. Divide the purchase price by the number of months you realistically expect to keep using it, then add a monthly allowance for repairs, storage, backup and any UPS you choose to use.
- Check the home connection. Confirm sustained upload capacity, data limits, overage costs, public reachability and ISP terms. A nominal broadband speed alone does not establish that a continuous stream is practical.
- Price the VPS workload. Add compute, disk, backup and networking, then estimate outbound transfer from bitrate and operating time. Compare that estimate with the exact plan allowance and charge for excess use.
- Add the cost of your time and downtime. Setup, patching, monitoring and restoring a failed home machine or VPS are real trade-offs even when they do not appear on an invoice.
For a rough transfer estimate, bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8 gives megabytes before protocol overhead. Convert consistently to the provider’s GiB billing units and allow for overhead. For one continuous outbound stream, calculate the traffic sent by the server; for video served to viewers, multiply by viewers and their watch time. Do not treat those two workloads as equivalent.
What published VPS and video-service prices show
DigitalOcean’s public Droplet page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists bundled Droplets starting at $4 per month. The displayed 512 MiB entry plan includes 500 GiB of outbound transfer; that allowance is plan-dependent and does not establish that this smallest plan can serve a particular video workload. DigitalOcean’s bandwidth documentation says additional outbound transfer costs $0.01 per GiB, inbound transfer is free, allowances are pooled across a team’s Droplets, and unused allowance does not roll over monthly. - Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These are provider-specific public terms, not a market-wide VPS price comparison. Check the plan, region and current terms you would actually buy. A low compute price is not enough if the plan lacks the memory, storage or transfer capacity your workload requires.

A managed video-delivery product uses a different model. Cloudflare Stream’s pricing page, updated September 8, 2026, lists storage in increments of $5 per month per 1,000 stored video minutes and delivery at $1 per 1,000 delivered video minutes, with bandwidth included in delivery pricing. It is not a general-purpose VPS; compare it only if its upload, playback and platform features fit your use case. Cloudflare Stream pricing.
When the desktop can be cheaper
- You already own a suitable desktop, so the incremental hardware cost is small.
- Measured power use and local electricity rates make continuous operation inexpensive.
- Your ISP permits the workload and your upload capacity and data terms can sustain it without extra charges.
- You are comfortable managing updates, storage, backups and recovery yourself.
“Already owned” does not mean cost-free: include the machine’s remaining useful life, power, wear, repairs and the time needed to keep it running.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
When a VPS can be cheaper or more practical
- The compute price and included outbound allowance cover the actual workload without significant overage.
- Home electricity, internet limits, outages or hardware replacement would make the local option more expensive.
- You need a reachable server without relying on home networking, and can manage its software and security.
- You need to change capacity or region rather than maintain a fixed local machine.
A VPS is not automatically simpler: you remain responsible for configuring and maintaining the server unless the service you choose includes that work.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important reliability and platform checks
- Home power and internet: a local stream stops if the desktop loses power or its connection fails. A UPS may help with brief power interruptions, but it does not solve an ISP outage or a long-duration failure.
- Server and transfer limits: confirm the VPS can sustain the needed network throughput and that the transfer estimate reflects actual viewers or stream destinations. Watch for overage charges.
- Copyright and YouTube rules: only stream material you have the necessary rights to use, including music and other embedded content. Reusing footage does not itself establish permission or guarantee YouTube monetization; review current YouTube policies for your channel and content before broadcasting.
- Recovery: decide how you will detect a dropped stream, restart it and verify that the channel is live. A server that is online does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast.
How to make the decision
Put measured desktop energy cost, amortized hardware, repairs, ISP charges, storage and your time on one side. Put VPS compute, disk, backup, outbound transfer and administration on the other. Then compare both against the same hours, bitrate and audience assumptions. If you do not yet know desktop power draw or viewer traffic, measure or estimate those first; either can reverse the apparent winner. The 120 W desktop figure in StreamNeo’s 2026 cost article is a vendor-published illustrative assumption, not an independent measurement or a representative specification for used office computers. Its example uses 720 operating hours per month. StreamNeo’s 24/7 streaming cost example.
