There is no single monthly electricity cost for a used desktop in India. The added energy charge depends on the combined power draw of the desktop and monitor, how many hours they are used, and the marginal electricity rate on your household bill. Measure the setup if possible; otherwise, calculate from a clearly labeled wattage assumption.
Estimate the desktop’s monthly electricity use
Use this formula for the desktop and monitor together:
Monthly units (kWh) = average combined power (W) × hours per day × 30 ÷ 1,000.
One electricity unit is one kilowatt-hour (kWh). The calculation estimates energy consumption over a 30-day month; it does not include the electricity used by other devices.

Worked example: 80 W for 8 hours a day
Assume the desktop and monitor average 80 W while you watch YouTube for 8 hours daily. This is an example assumption, not a measured typical value:
80 W × 8 hours × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 19.2 kWh in a 30-day month.
To estimate cost, multiply those units by the rate that applies to the additional consumption on your bill. If the extra units fall across more than one tariff slab, calculate each portion at its slab’s rate rather than multiplying all units by a single rate.

Find the right electricity rate for your home
India does not have one domestic per-unit electricity rate. The applicable tariff depends on the state or union territory, DISCOM, consumer category, tariff period and the household’s consumption slab. The Ministry of Power states: “Electricity tariffs in India are determined by the Appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions under the Electricity Act, 2003.” Its release dated 10 August 2026 also notes that state governments may subsidize consumer classes, including domestic consumers. A local example, not a national estimate
The Lakshadweep Department of Electricity’s published FY 2026–27 domestic LTDS-II schedule lists these energy rates:

If all 19.2 additional units in the example fit within the first 0–100-unit slab, they add ₹68.16 in energy charges at ₹3.55 per kWh. The schedule also lists a fixed charge of ₹25 per kW per month or part thereof. This is one local tariff example, not a price estimate for all Indian households. Lakshadweep Department of Electricity
Your final bill can also include fixed or load-based charges, electricity duty, fuel or power adjustments, and subsidies. These may affect the bill total, but they should not automatically be treated as charges caused by one desktop. The estimate here is for added energy charges, not a prediction of the full bill.

Measure the desktop and monitor instead of guessing
A used desktop has no universal streaming wattage. Its actual draw varies with components, workload, video resolution and power settings. Include the monitor if it is on while you watch. The most direct practical approach is a plug-in electricity usage monitor: measure the desktop and monitor together at the wall over representative YouTube sessions, then use the average watts in the formula.

A power supply’s rated capacity is not the same as the computer’s continuous consumption. Nor should idle figures be substituted for playback: a 2026 secondary report citing ENERGY STAR data gives a median idle draw of 10.6 W across 298 certified desktops, excluding monitors. That figure describes idle consumption—not YouTube playback, and not used PCs in India. TipidKuryente

- Combined watts: A higher average draw uses more energy. Include the screen and any other equipment you intend to count.
- Hours per day: At the same power draw and tariff, twice the daily viewing time means twice the monthly units.
- Marginal slab rate: If the extra units cross a slab boundary, split them across the applicable rates. The same desktop can add a different energy charge in households with different existing consumption.
For a personal estimate, record the combined average watts and viewing hours, calculate monthly kWh, and apply the relevant rate or rates from your current bill. Keep the wattage, hours and tariff assumptions visible so you can update the result if your usage or bill changes.
