Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo compare member retention fairly, follow the same group of members who were active before your 24/7 stream launched and measure what share remain active after equal-length periods before and after launch. Report new joins separately: total membership can rise even as baseline members leave. The result shows what changed after launch, not whether the stream caused it.
Define member retention before you measure it
Track a fixed baseline cohort
Choose the launch date—the date the continuous stream actually began—and define the members active at baseline. Then calculate the proportion of that same group still active at the end of each observation window. Use one consistent definition of an active membership in both periods.
If your data supports it, compare retention by member tenure or tier as well as in aggregate. Do not assume the overall rate applies equally to every segment.
Keep joins and cancellations separate
Report new joins and cancellations alongside baseline-cohort retention. The total number of members at a period’s end is not a retention measure: new memberships can mask departures from the original group.

Choose comparable periods and check the trend
Use equal-length windows
Compare equal-length windows immediately before and after launch, with the same date-boundary convention. Weekly observations can reveal whether retention was already changing; choose a duration suited to your membership volume and renewal cadence. YouTube does not prescribe a universal comparison period.
Look at what was happening before launch
Review the pre-launch trend before interpreting the post-launch figure. If retention was already falling, a low rate after launch cannot by itself be attributed to the stream. Record other changes near launch too, including membership prices or perks, publishing cadence, promotion, major events, and membership operations. These may also affect retention.

Build a comparison that separates membership from viewing
Present the membership outcome first, then acquisition and cancellation figures, and then stream-use measures. Keep the cohort definition, date boundaries, filters, and data extraction date with the exported data.
| Measure | What it tells you | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Retention of the baseline cohort | What share of the members active before launch remained active at the end of the comparison window. | Whether the stream caused members to stay. |
| New joins and cancellations | Membership acquisition and departures during each period. | Retention of the original cohort when reported only as aggregate counts. |
| Stream views, watch time, and concurrent viewers | Whether and how people watched the stream. | Whether existing channel members remained members. |
| Video audience-retention measures | How viewing continues through portions of a video. | Channel-member retention. Audience retention means continued viewing, not continued membership. |
Interpret YouTube viewing metrics accurately
YouTube’s live-stream reporting includes real-time concurrent viewers, peak concurrency, duration, views, chat rate, and average view duration. Post-stream reporting includes views, new subscribers, total watch time, peak concurrent viewers, and average view duration. Studio also provides video-level average and peak concurrent viewers and audience-retention information; channel-level livestream summaries include concurrent viewers and hours streamed. These metrics describe viewing activity, not member retention.

In the Analytics API, audienceWatchRatio compares viewings of a portion of a video with total video views. Because a portion can be replayed, the ratio can exceed 1. relativeRetentionPerformance compares a video’s retention with videos of similar length. Neither is a channel-member retention rate. The API’s averageConcurrentViewers measures concurrent viewers for a video or stream segment.
YouTube Analytics data is processed and despammed and measures different information from Live Control Room data. As a result, figures may differ between the two. YouTube said new Analytics channel reports including concurrent viewers and member cancellations were available starting May 6, 2024. Studio’s updated experience was gradually rolling out beginning July 2026, so interface locations may differ; use Advanced Mode where available to compare reports and export data, preserving the selected filters and dates. Data availability may vary.

Use cancellation feedback as context, not proof
YouTube’s Analytics API documentation includes cancellation-survey reasons such as financial reasons, loss of interest, dissatisfaction with perks, and inability to access or receive perks. These responses may help interpret a change, but they do not establish why members who did not answer cancelled—or that the stream caused a cancellation or retention change.
Know what your data can support
The reviewed YouTube materials do not establish that every channel can export member-level longitudinal cohorts or access a ready-made retention rate. If you have only aggregate counts, label the result an aggregate proxy. It cannot show whether a fixed group of members stayed.

A simple before-and-after comparison cannot rule out seasonality, existing trends, or other changes around launch. State the finding as “retention changed after launch” unless a credible comparison group or design addresses what might have happened without the stream. If you compare another channel or period, explain how comparable it is and whether its pre-launch trend was similar.
Keep the stream running without tying it to a home computer
For a documentary channel testing a continuous stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
Or let it run in the cloud
Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. The service is YouTube-only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
