Neither live viewing nor replay viewing automatically earns more from ads. YouTube can monetize eligible live streams and their replays, but the winner for a particular stream depends on how many ads actually serve and how much replay viewing it attracts. Compare the stream’s ad revenue in YouTube Analytics over defined live and replay periods—not views or RPM alone.
How ads can earn money during a live stream
When monetization is enabled for a live stream, YouTube documents pre-roll and display ads, along with mid-roll ads that can be inserted automatically or manually. Automatic mid-roll frequency can be set to low, medium, or high; YouTube recommends automatic placement, while scheduled or manual choices may have lower earnings potential. These options create opportunities for ads, not a promise that an ad will appear for every viewer.
YouTube says its ad systems decide whether an ad slot gets an ad based on factors intended to balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values. It may also limit interruptions for members, pause mid-rolls for viewers sending certain paid messages, or snooze ads at highly engaging moments. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
YouTube reported that creators who chose automatic live mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour. The Help page describes this as an average comparison between channels with automatic live mid-rolls turned on and channels without them, across 207 countries in January 2024. It is not a comparison of live earnings against replay earnings, nor a prediction for an individual channel.

How ads can earn money after the stream ends
A live stream may be archived as a video, and an eligible public replay can earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue if the creator has accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module and the content passes YouTube’s standard review and advertiser-friendly requirements. Replay revenue depends on subsequent viewing and ads actually served; an archived video is not guaranteed to show an ad on every view. YouTube’s live monetization guidance says Analytics can show ad-revenue breakdowns for both live streams and live replays.
Archiving is not assured for every broadcast: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Check YouTube’s archive guidance if retaining the replay matters.

How to compare the live and replay earnings fairly
- In YouTube Analytics, find the ad-revenue breakdown for the live stream and its live replay. Use the same stream and channel for both sides of the comparison.
- Set clear measurement windows: for example, the broadcast period and the first seven days after it ends. Seven days is a useful analysis choice, not a YouTube rule.
- Compare estimated ad revenue, not total estimated revenue. The latter can include memberships, YouTube Premium, and paid chat features. The ad-only metric is the relevant one for this question.
- Look beyond views: compare estimated monetized playbacks and ad impressions as well. A view may have no ad because of monetization settings, available ad inventory, viewer geography, recent ad exposure, Premium status, or other factors.
- If measuring efficiency as well as total earnings, report ad revenue per hour or per 1,000 views and state the denominator. Do not substitute RPM: YouTube defines RPM as revenue after revenue share per 1,000 views and it can include revenue sources beyond ads. CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share, so it answers a different question.
- Repeat the comparison across streams where possible. Topic, stream duration, audience, geography, season, ad settings, and replay reach can all affect results; your channel’s repeated measurements are more useful than a universal rule.
YouTube’s definitions and explanations of these metrics are in Understand ad revenue analytics.
What the revenue share does—and does not—tell you
For partners who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module, YouTube documents a 55% share of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the content Watch Page. This is the share for qualifying Watch Page ad revenue; it does not mean a live stream and its replay earn the same amount. YouTube also says the Partner Agreement does not guarantee how much, or whether, a creator will be paid. See YouTube’s partner earnings overview and monetization options.
