To live stream a dance class on YouTube, first confirm your channel can go live, choose the phone, webcam, or encoder workflow that fits your setup, and test the camera, voice, music, and upload connection before class. Frame the instructor head to toe with room to move, and use only music licensed for both the live broadcast and any replay.
Check that your channel can stream
- For live streaming generally, your channel must be verified, you must be at least 16, and the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- Streaming from the YouTube mobile app has additional requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a supported phone or tablet, a verified channel, streaming enabled, and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before class day.
Mobile has a separate audience consideration: YouTube may limit the audience for mobile streams from channels below 1,000 subscribers. Under that threshold, mobile livestream archives are set to private by default. Plan your archive visibility rather than assuming the replay will automatically be public.
Choose the right streaming setup
| Setup | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Phone / YouTube mobile app | A simple, single-camera class | Requires mobile eligibility, including 50 subscribers; audience and archive limitations may apply below 1,000 subscribers. |
| Webcam | A quick computer-based stream | Requires a computer webcam, and its field of view must capture the full dance space. |
| Encoder with camera and microphone | Overlays, separate camera or audio hardware, and more production control | Requires more setup and testing. YouTube recommends setting up early and checking the preview and stream from viewer devices. |
Pick based on your eligibility, the camera’s ability to show the room, whether students can hear your instructions over music, your available upload bandwidth, and how much production control you need. A phone tripod or stable floor stand can help keep a single-camera view steady; a separate microphone is worth considering if speech is hard to hear. These are practical equipment options, not tested product recommendations.
Prepare and test the class stream
- Enable live access in advance. Verify the channel and confirm that live streaming is available. For a mobile stream, confirm the subscriber and device requirements and activate streaming early enough to allow for the first activation delay.
- Create the stream using your chosen workflow. Use YouTube’s mobile or webcam workflow for a straightforward setup, or an encoder if you need overlays or separate hardware. For an encoder stream, set up the event early, check its preview, and confirm you can find and watch it from the channel or watch page and on a phone.
- Set the camera for movement, not just a talking head. Put it far enough back to show the instructor’s whole body and the space needed for steps, turns, and floor work. Check the edges of the frame while moving through the largest motions in the class. Full-body framing is practical advice for teaching dance, not a YouTube platform requirement.
- Check voice and music together. Play the class music at the level you expect to use, then speak at your normal teaching volume. Listen to the test on a phone or another viewer device: students need to hear cues clearly without music drowning them out. YouTube’s encoder guidance includes microphones as an equipment option and recommends monitoring audio and video.
- Measure upload capacity against the whole stream. Compare your available upload bandwidth with the combined bitrate of the outgoing stream. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload bandwidth in reserve beyond that bitrate. There is no single upload-speed figure that fits every class: the needed capacity depends on the stream bitrate, resolution, and any backup configuration.
- Set visibility and replay expectations. Choose the intended visibility for the live event and decide what should happen to its archive. If you stream from the mobile app with fewer than 1,000 subscribers, account for YouTube’s default-private archive behavior; check the resulting replay after class before sharing it.
Get music rights for the live class and replay
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to use music in both the live content and its archive. YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

Buying a track or having a general music subscription does not by itself establish that you have permission to livestream it or leave it in a replay. Confirm that your license covers YouTube live use and archived use. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content and may interrupt a stream; even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to prevent an interruption. Ask the rights holder about that process before class.
Run the class and check the archive
- Start early enough to check the live preview, camera framing, and audio before students join.
- Keep the instructor within the tested frame and monitor whether speech remains intelligible when music is playing.
- After the session, inspect the replay and its visibility before sending students a link. If the archive is private by default, change its visibility only if that matches your rights and sharing plan.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the class is a prerecorded dance lesson you want to keep live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a different workflow from broadcasting a live camera class: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
