Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can schedule a pre-recorded playlist to start feeding a YouTube livestream by scheduling two separate things: the YouTube event in Live Control Room and a local encoder or player launch in Windows Task Scheduler. Task Scheduler starts software; it does not play the playlist itself or guarantee YouTube publishes the feed. Your encoder must connect successfully, and the event’s start settings determine whether an operator still needs to click Go live.
How the two schedules work
YouTube’s scheduled event creates the upcoming livestream and its watch page. Windows Task Scheduler starts a program or script on your computer at the time you choose. A media player or encoder reads the playlist, encodes or passes through its audio and video as configured, and sends the feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. These are separate systems: a scheduled Windows task can run while the YouTube event remains in preview, or the event can be scheduled even though the computer never starts sending a feed.
- YouTube schedule: establishes the event, metadata, privacy, and viewer-facing page.
- Windows schedule: launches the local software or wrapper script.
- Encoder and stream settings: determine whether the playlist reaches YouTube and whether the event goes live automatically or waits for an operator.
1. Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Under Manage, schedule a new stream or reuse an existing stream’s settings. Set the title, description, privacy, and intended date and time, then save the event.
- Keep the event’s watch page or scheduled event available so you can verify the correct event is selected and accessible before the start. An upcoming public event can give viewers a page where they can opt in to notifications.
- In the stream settings, note the stream URL and the stream key for the encoder setup. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a publicly shared script, screenshot, or document. If you reset it in YouTube, update the key stored in the encoder or scheduled command as well.
For YouTube’s current encoder and scheduling workflow, see YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder. For the controls that affect whether a stream starts and stops automatically, see YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
2. Configure the playlist and encoder
Choose software that can read the media files or playlist format you intend to use, connect to YouTube’s stream URL and key, and remain running unattended. The setup is specific to that encoder: Task Scheduler has no built-in playlist player, and YouTube’s setup pages do not provide a universal playlist command or looping syntax. Follow the selected program’s official instructions for media paths, playlist order, looping, startup arguments, reconnect behavior, and unattended operation.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Use file paths that will remain valid when the task runs. A playlist that works only because files are in a user’s current folder may fail when launched from a different working directory.
- Verify that the encoder can access every media file and that both audio and video are present in its output preview or status display.
- Confirm the chosen YouTube stream’s auto-start behavior. In the manual flow, YouTube instructs the operator to wait for the encoder preview and then select Go live. Auto-start can remove that manual step only when the stream settings and encoder workflow are configured for it; test your particular setup rather than assuming the event will publish automatically.
- Only stream recordings you have the rights to use. A scheduled or continuous broadcast is still subject to YouTube’s copyright policies and live-stream rules; scheduling does not grant permission to use music, footage, or other people’s work.
3. Create the Windows Task Scheduler task
Create a task that launches the encoder or a batch/script wrapper. Microsoft’s schtasks /create reference documents schedule types and the /tr field for the program or command to run; Microsoft also documents Task Scheduler triggers and actions.
- Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu and choose Create Task (or Create Basic Task if its simpler wizard meets your needs).
- Give the task a clear name. On Triggers, add a one-time or recurring trigger and set the date and time that the encoder should start.
- On Actions, add Start a program. Enter the full path to the encoder executable, or to the script or batch file that launches it. Put any arguments in the arguments field and set Start in to the working directory the encoder expects. Quote paths with spaces when writing a command or wrapper.
- Review the task’s account and run conditions. Make sure the account used by the task can read the media and configuration files, access the network, and run the encoder at the scheduled time. If the program requires an interactive desktop session, test whether it can actually start under the chosen sign-in conditions.
- Save the task and run it manually once from Task Scheduler. Check the encoder’s status and YouTube preview, then inspect the task’s last-run result and history if it does not start as expected.
For command-line scheduling, use Microsoft’s documented syntax and replace the example values with your own task name, schedule, and command. For example, the general shape is schtasks /create /sc once /st HH:MM /sd MM/DD/YYYY /tn "YouTube stream" /tr "C:\Path With Spaces\launch-stream.bat". This is a syntax illustration, not a ready-to-run encoder command: date format can depend on Windows locale, and the wrapper must contain the correct encoder-specific arguments and working-directory handling.

4. Decide whether a person must click Go live
| Start method | What happens | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Manual Go live | The task starts the encoder and YouTube receives its preview; an operator checks it and selects Go live. | A person must be available at the event time, and the correct scheduled event must be open. |
| Configured auto-start | The encoder starts at the scheduled time and YouTube may begin the event automatically if the relevant stream settings support that behavior. | Test the exact stream settings and encoder combination end to end; do not infer automatic publishing merely because the Windows task launched. |
YouTube’s live-stream settings guide explains the available auto-start and auto-stop controls, but automation still depends on the stream configuration and a working encoder connection. If you cannot verify automatic publishing reliably, plan for a person to confirm the preview and start the event.
5. Test before relying on the schedule
YouTube’s streaming tips advise preparing early, monitoring stream health, and allowing 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before a livestream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time; these are operational recommendations on an undated YouTube Help page, accessed in 2026, not guarantees of success.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
- Run the task under the same account and conditions it will use at showtime.
- Confirm that the computer will be powered on, awake, and connected when the trigger fires.
- Check that the playlist resolves all media paths and plays in the intended order, with audio and video present.
- Check the encoder preview, the correct YouTube event page, and YouTube’s stream-health indicators before the scheduled start.
- Confirm the stream key is current and the upload connection has enough capacity for the configured output.
- If the system depends on a manual Go live click, arrange for someone to perform it; a Windows trigger cannot click through YouTube’s preview step by itself.
6. Troubleshoot a stream that does not start
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder never opens | The computer is off or asleep, the task trigger is wrong, or the task account cannot run the program. | Check power and sleep settings, trigger date and time, task history and last-run result, executable path, permissions, and sign-in conditions. |
| The encoder opens but cannot find media | The task has a different working directory or cannot access the playlist or files. | Use stable full paths, set the task’s Start in directory, and ensure the task account can read every file. |
| YouTube shows no incoming feed | The encoder is offline, the stream URL or key is incorrect or outdated, or the network cannot sustain the upload. | Check the encoder connection status, verify its URL and key against the scheduled stream, update the encoder after a key reset, and check upload capacity and stream health. |
| YouTube shows preview but the event is not live | The stream is waiting for the manual start action, or the auto-start configuration does not apply to this event. | Open the correct event in Live Control Room and select Go live if required; review the stream’s auto-start setting and retest before the next scheduled run. |
| The stream drops or becomes unstable | A connectivity disruption or insufficient upload headroom interrupts delivery. | Check YouTube’s stream-health status and available upload capacity. YouTube notes that a connectivity disruption can break a stream; a local schedule cannot prevent a network outage. |
How long will YouTube keep the recording?
YouTube Help says livestreams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That threshold is YouTube’s stated behavior on an undated Help page accessed in 2026; it should not be treated as a promise that every longer stream will be archived. See YouTube Help: Find your live stream archive.
