Pair those settings with trusted moderators who can act around the clock. No single filter guarantees a clean chat, and tighter access rules can make it harder for legitimate viewers to join in.
Set up YouTube’s moderation controls
In YouTube Studio, open the live chat settings for your stream and configure the controls below. Labels and interface details may change; YouTube’s current help pages describe these features, but do not prescribe a setup that fits every channel.
Block known spam terms
Add recurring spam phrases, links, or other terms to the blocked-words list. This targets known patterns, but spammers can change wording, so blocked words should not be treated as a complete filter.
Hold potentially inappropriate messages for review
Enable the setting to hold potentially inappropriate live chat messages for review. Start with Basic moderation; consider Strict if you want a broader range of messages held. Held messages stay hidden unless a moderator or channel owner reviews and approves them. Turn on slow mode
Slow mode limits how often each user can post, reducing the rate at which an account can flood chat. The channel owner, moderators, and channel members are exempt from the rate limit. Slow mode can be used together with subscribers-only chat.
Choose whether to restrict participation
If spam continues, consider limiting participation. These options reduce access for legitimate viewers too, so use them when the disruption warrants the added friction.

Subscribers-only live chat
Require viewers to subscribe before they can chat. You can also set a minimum subscription duration, which raises the bar for accounts that have only just subscribed. Subscribers-only mode can operate alongside slow mode.
Members-only live chat
Alternatively, allow only channel members to chat. Members-only and subscribers-only modes cannot be enabled at the same time. Choose the one that best fits your community and the level of access you want to preserve.

Use moderators for continuous coverage
Automated controls can filter or delay messages, but people are needed to review edge cases and respond to accounts that keep disrupting the stream. Assign trusted moderators who can cover the times you are away, including overnight periods for a 24/7 stream.
- Moderators can remove messages, time out users, and hide users from the channel.
- YouTube offers timeout durations from 10 seconds to 24 hours; choose a duration proportionate to the behavior.
- Managing moderators can change certain live chat settings, but they do not have access to Live Control Room or YouTube Studio.

Match the response to the problem

YouTube does not publish comparative effectiveness rates for these controls, so there is no evidence-based percentage or guaranteed ranking of which will reduce spam most. Adjust the combination as the stream’s chat changes, and review held messages and recurring spam patterns as an operational practice.
