For a prerecorded YouTube livestream replay, choose mid-rolls in the video’s Monetization settings in YouTube Studio—not from the live-broadcast controls in Live Control Room. If the video is monetized and at least eight minutes long, you can use automatic placements, manual placements, or both. Start with automatic placements if you want a lower-effort baseline, then review the replay and keep, move, add, or remove slots to fit natural pauses and transitions. A slot is an opportunity for an ad, not a guarantee that one will appear.
Choose the setting that fits the replay
YouTube’s long-video workflow offers automatic ad slots, manual ad slots, or manual slots supplemented by automatic ones. The right choice depends on how much control you want and how naturally the recording breaks up. YouTube does not prescribe a universal number of mid-rolls or a fixed spacing interval for prerecorded videos.
| Setting | What it does | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic slots | YouTube identifies potential breakpoints and places slots. | You want less manual setup and are willing to inspect the proposed placements. | Less direct control over where the opportunities appear; review the timeline for disruptive placements. |
| Manual slots | You choose specific points on the video timeline for potential ads. | The replay has clear pauses, transitions, or topic changes and you want to select those points. | Requires reviewing the recording and placing slots yourself. |
| Manual plus automatic | Your chosen slots remain, with automatic slots providing additional opportunities. | You want to mark important breaks but also let YouTube find other potential breakpoints. | Review both kinds of placements so the combined result does not interrupt the flow. |
| Mid-rolls off | No mid-roll slots are configured. | Interruptions would undermine a continuous or sensitive viewing experience. YouTube gives meditation as an example where turning mid-rolls off may be appropriate. | You forgo mid-roll ad opportunities on that video. |
YouTube says slots near natural pauses or visual transitions are more likely to serve than disruptive placements, such as those in the middle of a sentence or action. Use the actual replay—not a fixed interval rule—to decide where a break makes sense. See YouTube’s guidance on how ads work in videos.
Before you edit the replay
- The video must be at least eight minutes long for mid-roll ads to be enabled.
- The channel and video must be eligible for monetization, and monetization must be turned on for the video. Check the applicable status in YouTube Studio.
- Ad suitability still matters. Advertiser-unfriendly content may receive limited or no ads, and some age-restricted content may be ineligible for monetization. A mid-roll setting does not override eligibility or suitability decisions.
For the platform’s current requirements and controls, consult Manage mid-roll ad breaks in long videos and Choose how you want to monetize on a computer.

Set and review mid-rolls in YouTube Studio
- Open the video in Studio. On desktop, go to YouTube Studio, open Content, and select the prerecorded livestream replay you want to edit.
- Open Monetization. In the video’s settings, select Monetization. Confirm that the video is eligible and monetization is on.
- Enable mid-roll ads. For a qualifying monetized video, turn on Show mid-roll ads during my video when interruptions suit the content.
- Choose an approach. Use automatic slots as a starting point, place manual slots, or combine manual slots with automatic ones. The available long-video controls are timeline placements; do not substitute a live-stream ad interval for this setting.
- Inspect the timeline against the replay. Watch or scrub through the recording around each proposed or selected slot. Prefer a genuine pause, visual transition, or change of topic. Move or delete a slot that lands in the middle of a sentence, demonstration, performance, or other continuous action.
- Use Studio’s slot feedback. Studio can flag manual slots that are unlikely to serve. Treat that as a signal to consider moving the slot to a more natural breakpoint, not as a prediction that an ad will or will not definitely run.
- Save your changes. Revisit the video’s Monetization settings if you later decide to change the configuration or turn mid-rolls off.
Keep prerecorded-video settings separate from live controls
A replay is managed as a video with ad slots on its timeline. Live-stream controls instead concern an active broadcast and can include automatic, scheduled, or manual live ad breaks. Do not set a live-stream interval expecting it to configure mid-roll positions on a prerecorded replay. YouTube’s separate instructions are in Monetize your live stream.
YouTube reports that channels choosing automatic live mid-rolls saw over 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels without that setting, across 207 countries in January 2024. That is a YouTube-reported live-stream comparison, not evidence of an expected revenue increase for a prerecorded replay. For prerecorded videos, YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve; slot quality, advertiser demand, viewer experience, and other factors affect delivery.

Common problems and what to check
- The mid-roll option is unavailable: Check that you are editing the video in Studio, that it is at least eight minutes long, and that monetization is enabled and applicable to the channel and video.
- A manual slot is flagged as unlikely to serve: Review its position in the replay and consider moving it to a pause, transition, or topic boundary. The feedback indicates likelihood, not certainty.
- A slot cuts into the content: Move or remove it. Mid-rolls are optional; if the format depends on uninterrupted attention, turn them off rather than forcing a break.
- Slots are set but viewers report no ads: A configured slot is not a promise of delivery. YouTube may not serve an ad at every opportunity, and eligibility, advertiser suitability, demand, placement quality, and viewer experience can affect whether ads appear.
- You are looking for an ad frequency or interval control: Make sure you are in the prerecorded video’s Monetization workflow. The long-video guidance centers on automatic and manual timeline slots, not live-broadcast scheduling intervals.
