Viewers may subscribe to a 24/7 YouTube music stream because it reliably fits a mood or routine—and, for some, because its live status and chat make listening feel shared. The evidence supports these as plausible reasons, not a proven formula: no representative study establishes why viewers subscribe specifically to always-on YouTube music channels or how much any one factor raises subscriptions.
Music that serves a mood or task can earn repeat listening
A stream built around “beats to relax/study to” makes a practical promise: listeners can put on music while they focus, relax, work, or sleep. In a 2025 exploratory student study, respondents most often chose relaxing, focusing on tasks, and enjoying the music among their top criteria for listening to lo-fi hip-hop. The study also reported that 40 percent of its respondents used YouTube most frequently for lo-fi hip-hop. That figure is specific to the study published by the Journal of Undergraduate Research in Anthropology at the University of Central Arkansas; it is not a representative estimate of all YouTube music listeners, and it does not measure subscriptions. Read the study summary.
Utility may give someone a reason to return. But listening again, watching, and subscribing are different behaviors: a person can leave a stream playing without watching the screen, and repeated listening does not necessarily mean they will subscribe. The available survey describes listening preferences, not what converts a listener into a subscriber.
Liveness can make the stream feel like a shared experience
A 2026 Journal of Marketing study by Duani, Barasch, and Ward compared live and equivalent or identical prerecorded amateur music performances. Knowing that a performance was live increased perceived presence—the feeling of “being there”—and social connection. Those responses were linked to enjoyment, continued watching, and intentions to follow, subscribe, or join a fan community. This is evidence for a general live-viewing mechanism, not a direct study of continuous ambient music stations. See the study summary.

For an always-on music stream, the live label may signal that the channel is active now, rather than just a playlist. That distinction could matter to a viewer who values a shared present moment. It should not be treated as proof that a 24/7 stream gets more subscribers simply because it is live: the study examined amateur performances, not around-the-clock stations.
Chat and atmosphere can add a social layer
YouTube Help describes livestreaming as a shared experience that can build community between creators and viewers, and says live chat allows interaction and real-time conversation. That is YouTube’s explanation of its features, not independent evidence that chat causes subscriptions in every genre. For a background listener, chat may be irrelevant; for someone who enjoys greeting other listeners or seeing the creator respond, it can make the channel feel more like a place to visit. Qualitative studies offer context, but not a measure of how common these feelings are. Interviews with regular users of the ChilledCow station examined how its music and animation contributed to the experience; they can inform discussion of atmosphere or companionship, but cannot establish how prevalent those motives are. Another exploratory study used online ethnography and comment analysis to examine eight YouTube music broadcasts during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, focusing on social cohesion, intercultural understanding, and community resilience. Its small set of cases and exceptional lockdown context limit what it can tell us about current 24/7 stations. Study summary.

Ambient stations and artist-led streams offer different kinds of connection
Not every music stream is trying to build the same relationship. A lo-fi station may be valued for a consistent atmosphere and music that suits a routine; an artist-led broadcast may center on a particular performer, fandom, or interaction. An interview-based study of V Live music fans identified interpersonal relationships, social presence, celebrity support and presence, social interaction, and differentiation as motives. That research points to social and identity motives in fan livestreams, but V Live’s celebrity-centered setting differs from an ambient YouTube radio stream. Study summary.
YouTube for Artists puts one artist-fan reason plainly: “Some of your most dedicated fans subscribe to your channel to stay close to the music.” That statement describes a possible connection to an artist, not a universal explanation for subscriptions to anonymous or ambient stations. What the evidence does—and does not—say
- Musical fit and usefulness may give listeners a reason to use a stream repeatedly; the lo-fi survey is exploratory and does not measure subscription decisions.
- Liveness and social presence can support connection and subscription intent in research on amateur music performances, but the finding has not been established specifically for 24/7 stations.
- Chat and community may appeal to some viewers, while others simply want uninterrupted background music.
- Continuous availability suits recurring listening occasions, but the available evidence does not establish how much 24/7 availability itself changes subscription likelihood.
The most defensible account is that music utility and fit may bring people back, while live presence, atmosphere, and community can give some listeners an additional reason to identify with a channel. None of the cited work establishes a single “main reason” or predicts subscriber conversion for a particular stream.
For creators: make the promise clear and secure the music rights
If you run a 24/7 music stream, make its intended use and musical identity easy to understand—for example, whether it is for focus, relaxation, or a particular artist community. Chat can support interaction when the audience wants it, but it is not a substitute for music that fits the channel’s promise. YouTube’s setup guide lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods for going live; these are ways to broadcast, not evidence that a particular setup earns subscriptions.
