Public IP

Server billing and outbound traffic
Hetzner bills a created server until it is deleted, even if you power it off. Only outgoing traffic is billed; incoming and internal traffic are free. What the price does—and does not—tell you about FFmpeg
The server price alone cannot establish whether a VPS will handle your particular FFmpeg workload. First determine whether FFmpeg will encode or transcode video in real time, or simply copy/remux a pre-encoded stream. CPU needs depend on the actual codec, resolution, frame rate and processing task. Hetzner identifies shared-resource and dedicated-resource server categories, but the available official material does not provide Hetzner-specific FFmpeg benchmarks for these examples. Use YouTube settings to estimate traffic, not CPU
YouTube recommends RTMPS and supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1. Its recommended bitrate ranges vary with codec, resolution and frame rate: for H.264, the guidance lists 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p60. Use YouTube’s current table for your chosen format rather than treating those examples as universal settings. Bitrate helps estimate network use, but it does not determine the compute capacity FFmpeg needs. YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer output formats. How to make a realistic budget
- Price the exact server and location. Start with the current Hetzner order-screen rate; the examples above are EU prices published for the 15 June 2026 adjustment.
- Add the public IP you need. Include the applicable Primary IP charge; do not assume a cloud server includes one.
- Check taxes and traffic terms. Confirm applicable VAT or other tax, the outbound allowance for that plan and region, and any overage rate.
- Estimate monthly transfer. Multiply stream bitrate by the hours streamed, convert bits to bytes, then compare the estimate with the plan’s outbound allowance. Leave room for protocol overhead.
- Test the real FFmpeg job. Run the intended source, codec, resolution and frame rate on the candidate instance and verify sustained output before relying on it for an always-on channel.
