Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a typical H.264 stream to YouTube Live, use RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Set bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you are actually sending: YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 or 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Make sure your upload connection can sustain the full stream bitrate with headroom, then test and monitor stream health.
Recommended H.264 settings for YouTube Live
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its settings also specify progressive scan and square pixels. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of identical picture quality across different content or connections. YouTube’s live encoder settings
- Protocol: RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP recommended by YouTube.
- Video codec: H.264 for the settings in this guide.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Scan and pixels: progressive scan and square pixels.
- Frame rate: choose the rate appropriate to your program, up to 60 fps under YouTube’s general live encoder guidance.
Choose the bitrate for your resolution and frame rate
Use the row matching the resolution and frame rate sent by your encoder. The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 minimum and recommended live bitrates in Mbps. Aim for the recommended value when your connection can sustain it. The minimum is not a promise that every scene will look equally good at that rate. YouTube’s live encoder bitrate table
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | Minimum (Mbps) | Recommended (Mbps) |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 14 | 50 |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 11 | 42 |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 8 | 34 |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 7 | 21 |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 | 17 |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 | 14 |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 | 8 |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 | 8 |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 | 4 |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.4 | 4 |
For instance, a 1080p60 encoder should target 17 Mbps if the connection can reliably carry it; dropping to 1080p30 changes the recommended target to 14 Mbps. A higher frame rate or resolution requires more bitrate in YouTube’s table. If the connection cannot sustain the target, choose a lower resolution or frame rate rather than setting a bitrate that the connection cannot reliably deliver.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Audio and advanced H.264 options
YouTube lists two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC for H.264. For SDR, its guidance lists Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. Audio guidance lists AAC or MP3, stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. YouTube’s encoder settings
HDR is a separate workflow: YouTube recommends H.265 (HEVC) for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Do not treat the H.264 SDR settings above as YouTube’s HDR recommendation. YouTube’s encoder settings

Make sure your upload connection can carry the stream
The total streaming bitrate must fit within the upload bandwidth actually available to the encoder. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom and warns that shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. Run an upload speed test and select a stream quality your connection can support reliably; a disruption can break a live stream. YouTube streaming tips
- Use the upload speed available at the streaming location and time, not just a plan’s advertised maximum.
- Account for the stream’s total bitrate, including audio, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- If the connection is shared or variable, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until the stream has enough reliable capacity.
Preflight checklist: test before going live
YouTube recommends testing before an event with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health and messages while live. This checklist brings those steps together. YouTube streaming tips

- Check that the outbound connection can sustain the video and audio bitrate with 20% headroom.
- Run a test using representative sound and movement, not only a static opening screen.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and messages before the event begins.
- Once live, monitor stream health and messages so you can respond to connection or encoder problems.
Latency and 4K trade-offs
YouTube says 2160p (4K) live streams cannot use its low-latency optimization and are set to normal latency. More generally, lower latency can increase playback buffering, so choose a latency mode according to how much audience interaction matters versus playback stability. Common problems and what to check
- Stream health shows connection trouble: check available upload bandwidth and whether other users or devices are consuming it. Reduce output settings if the connection cannot sustain the total bitrate with headroom.
- The video looks poor despite a configured bitrate: verify that the encoder is sending the resolution and frame rate you intended, and that the bitrate matches that row in YouTube’s table. The table’s minimum rate is not a quality guarantee.
- Playback buffers for viewers: check the connection and consider whether a lower latency mode is contributing to buffering. At 4K, YouTube uses normal latency.
- The encoder rejects or produces inconsistent output with advanced options: confirm progressive scan, square pixels, and the listed H.264 options, then test the full setup before the event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an encoder-setting change. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first day free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
